Odds 'n ends as camp drags on

So, the Michael Strahan soap opera is continuing. Reports indicate that Strahan may not make a decision, but he will at least make a statement within the next couple of days.

Geez, Michael, either you want to play or you don't. C'mon, already.

Let's get off the Strahan stuff for now. I'm bumming that the Giants have no practice Sunday, since I would actually have time to get over to UAlbany and watch if they did. Oh, well, that's the way it goes.

Anyway, let me toss this out for your discussion. Here's my list of the five most impressive players in camp so far, based on what I've read and the little bit that I've seen.

-- Steve Smith, wide receiver.
-- Marco Thomas, wide receiver.
-- Jared Lorenzen, quarterback.
-- Osi Umenyiora, defensive end (he's been destroying David Diehl on a daily basis).
-- Zak DeOssie, linebacker.

Love that list
3 rookies, a 24 year old QB and a 25 year old DE who has already made all pro.  The youth movement lives.  The Giants will be okay w/o Strahan.  In fact, they'll be better off w/o him.  He had his day, he'll make the Hall, but the team doesn't need another year of the kind of distractions he can be counted on to provide.
Diehl is a worry, though.  Then again, going up against Osi every day, will make him better.  He doesn't have the temperament that would allow him to get discouraged and give up.
I'd like to see Lorenzen get more playing time this year.  For a while back in the day, the Giants started Heinrich at QB in the first quarter to feel out the defense.  Conerly would analyze it with the coaches and play from the 2nd quarter to the end.  I wonder if this kind of scheme could work with Lorenzen and Eli?

Don Heinrich...
George I had almost forgoten about Heinrich....ha ha.

I'm with you....let's put Hefty in the backfield with Eli.  He could take an occasional direct snap or act as fullback.

Only kidding of course, but the way quarterbacks get hammered these days and need to sit out a few plays til the cobwebs go away it makes sense to get Lorenzen to the point wheere he can seamlessly come in and out without fumbling or going totally conservative.  Only game snaps can prepare a guy for that.

Lorenzen for fullback
Who needs Robert Douglas? The Hefty Lefty is bigger than any of the backs, anyway. Just kidding, but if Eli were to get hurt I'd love to see Lorenzen get his chance. We know Anthony Wright's track record isn't good, so I'd hope Lorenzen can be better than that.
