Reese optimistic as camp approaches

There's an interesting article today at NorthJersey.com about Jerry Reese's expectations for the Giants as his first training camp as GM nears.

Reese, as you might expect, thinks his team will be better than most of the so-called 'experts' have thus far predicted.

Here's a little snippet from the story.

"People are saying we didn't do much in the off-season. They don't expect much from us. And sometimes that's good. It can give you an edge, give you extra motivation. ... "But I think we have enough good players to improve. I say 'Why not us?' in the NFC. We have as good a shot as anyone."

Giants fans have to hope Reese is right.

• How does Tom rate? RealFootball365 came out with its rankings of the NFL's 32 head coaches today. Where did Giants Coach Tom Coughlin rate? He came in 22nd, which is better than I thought he might. Amazingly, that's one slot ahead of legendary Redskins coach Joe Gibbs.

"...past but not too far gone,"
are the words that explain Joe Gibbs being so low on the list, Sean Payton so high, etc.  Coughlin keeps getting rewarded for the Giants being in the playoffs two years in a row, which would be enough for a higher ranking, but his sideline hysteria, the internal squabbling, and lack of on field discipline, and his players' dislike of him takes him down.  22nd seems about right.
One important measure of a head coach is the type of assistants he hires.  Using this standard, Jim Lee Howell belongs at the top of the heap historically, having hired Lombardi, Landry, and (I think)Sherman.  Remember, in his first few years Sherman was considered a genius, having brought in Tittle and Shofner to supercharge the offense.  The fans demanded his departure not so much because of the team's subsequent decline, but because he traded Sam Huff, who they worshipped.
