What do you make of the Vick situation?

Michael Vick
We are into the summer doldrums now.

The baseball season is heating up, while my beloved Yankees are fading away, the NBA Playoffs are creeping along, I just discovered that they still play hockey and that the Stanley Cup finals have begun, and it's golf season.

All of this means that, on a day-to-day basis, there isn't much happening in the football world. That, however, does not mean we don't have things to talk about.

As we count down the hours to training camp, I'd like to occasionally address some of the news that has happened around the league this off-season.

There is no better place to start than with Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick and this whole dog-fighting controversy.

Vick is under investigation to determine if he has any involvement in dog fighting after a raid at his property in April turned up 66 dogs, including 55 pit bulls, and equipment that can be associated with dog fighting.

Vick was called "one of the heavyweights' of the dog fighting world by a confidential source in a recent ESPN article.

What do you guys make of this mess? If his involvement is proven, what type of punishment will Vick face from both law enforcement and the NFL?

This is the latest in a series of incidents for Vick. There was also the airport water bottle fiasco and the time Vick flipped off a fan after a game last season.

Beyond all the legal questions is a more basic one for Falcons owner Arthur Blank and first-year coach Bobby Petrino. That is, even if Vick avoids jail time in the dog fighting situation is he a guy you still have faith in to be the centerpiece of your franchise?

My answer to that would have to be no. The reality is, when I watch Vick play, I just don't see a guy who is a very good quarterback. I see a guy who can run around and throw the ball a long way, but even after six years in the league I don't see a guy who really knows what he's doing.

And all these other incidents tell me he really isn't all that interested in figuring it out.

No matter what happens with Vick between now and Week 1 I think the Falcons better start looking for an exit strategy.

Your thoughts?

i have to agree.  but what's frustrating is that I DID see a very good quarterback and a guy that knew what he was doing at one time.  but that was almost five years ago at lambeu field during the playoffs.  that was a time when it wasn't about if vick was going to be an NFL great, the only question was how great would he become?  and for him to reach this point now is truly disappointing.

the only title vick has now is the most overrated player in the NFL, maybe in sports.  and the blackeye from these disgusting allegations of dog-fighting certainly doesn't improve his image.

if found guilty, he should at the very least be given a Pacman Jones-type ban.

are people out to get michael vick?  i don't think so.  when you're one of the faces of the NFL, your jersey sales are near the top (#2 i believe) and you're a role-model to countless kids then you should be held to a different standard.

i hope the allegations are false, but the more and more i hear about it, its almost undoubtedly true.  where there's smoke, there's fire.

Vick
Yeah, Vick looked good his first year and in college, too.  (Just like Vince Young?  I doubt it.  Young seems to have his act together.)  Now, if not the most overrated player, Vick's certainly the most overrated QB, hands down.  As for the dogs, let's see if the suspicions/allegations are true.  If they are, I say lower the boom on him.
