Spikes, Mitchell on Giants radar

[UPDATE:] Both Newsday and the Star-Ledger are reporting that Mitchell may sign with the Giants by the end of the day.
The Giants have moved on after backing out of a potential deal for Denver's Al Wilson, and are reportedly in the hunt for a couple of other linebackers.

According to the Buffalo News the Bills are looking to move Takeo Spikes. also, according to the NFL Network, Kansas City free agent linebacker Kawika Mitchell will visit the Giants today.

Spikes, 30, is also drawing interest from the Eagles. He is coming off two injury-plagued seasons, having missed most of 2005 with a torn achilles tendon and sitting out several games last season with a hamstring pull. He is also due $4.6 million this season.

A friend of mine who is a Bills fan said Spikes might not be the dominating player he was before his achilles injury, but that he would be worth the risk for a second-day draft pick.

Spikes knows that last season wasn't his best, and thinks maybe he came back too quickly from the achilles injury.

Mitchell, 27, is a four-year veteran who had 105 and 104 tackles the past two seasons. Mitchell, who is 6-foot-1, 253 pounds, is an unrestricted free agent. He played in the middle for Kansas City but would move outside if he comes to New York.

So, it looks like GM Jerry Reese still has a few cards to play before the upcoming draft.

Spikes or Mitchell, which would you rather have?

Mitchell
I'm surprised he's gotten as little interest as he has.

I'm still a bit confused as to why the Giants are so hot after middle linebackers...

Mitchell
I'd rather have Mitchell, he is younger and has more upside. The Giants are looking at MLB because there is a chance the would move Pierce to weak side.

Mitchell v Spikes
I suppose it's what you are looking for. If you're looking for a LB for the next 3-5 years, Mitchell is definitely the guy. If you're looking for a one, maybe 2 year stop gap then Spikes is probably the way to go. Spikes is certainly the more talented and proven of the two, but as you said is a whole lot closer to the end of his career than a guy like Mitchell.

By the way...
I'm reading that they'd likely move Mitchell, not Pierce to the outside...

Pierce is not going anywhere. He has said publicly he does not want to move outside, he's been their best player the last two years and there's no reason they would move him. Mitchell would go outside ... unless the Giants went 3-4, which I find unlikely. It's not what Spagnuolo knows.

That's why I found the reports odd
I don't know why they'd mess with middle linebacker.  Like you said, Pierce has been great there.
