On the QB food chain, how high up is Eli?

Just how good has New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning been so far this season?

During Monday night's broadcast of the game against Atlanta ESPN's Ron Jaworski, who is to quarterbacks what Mel Kiper is to the NFL Draft, said he would rank Eli 8th currently among starting NFL quarterbacks.

I don't have the list of the seven QBs Jaworski puts in front of Eli, but where he ranks on the quarterback food chain is always a fun game to play. So, let's do that.

During the off-season Sports Illustrated's Peter King told us Eli was the 22nd best of the 32 projected starters. To me, that was just further evidence that King is off his rocker. Not a chance there are 21 better quarterbacks around the NFL than Eli.

But, fast-forwarding to right now, are there only seven in the league who are better?

If you go by the NFL's screwy Quarterback Rating System Manning is not even close to the top 10. By that measure, he has a QB Rating of 83.7 thru 6 games, 17th in the league. Such luminaries as David Garrard, Matt Schaub, Derek Anderson and Damon Huard are ahead of him.

If you've watched the games, though, you know there are not 16 quarterbacks in the league playing better football than Eli.

I was critical of him Monday for the two interceptions he threw. The fact remains, though, that he completed 12 consecutive passes at one point and passed for more than 300 yards.

He is playing with more confidence and throwing the ball more accurately (60.7% completions) than at any time in his career. He has also become the unquestioned leader of the Giants offense.

When I chat with bloggers from other teams around the league they always ask about Eli. Mostly, they want to know if he will ever be a star?

To that I say, watch the games. In my mind, he already is one of the league's best quarterbacks. He may not be his brother, Peyton, or Tom Brady -- but nobody else is, either.

Eli is an upper echelon quarterback, without question.

Who is ahead of him?

Peyton, Brady and Brett Favre, of course. Then, I'll give you Tony Romo and Carson Palmer. After that, I can give you an argument on just about quarterback you name.

Jeff Garcia? Please. He's having a nice season, but he's still a retread.

David Garrard? No interceptions, but Jacksonville still hardly ever scores. He can't be that good.

Ben Roethlisberger? No, sorry. He is still more of a caretaker. He throws the ball about 10 fewer times per game than Eli. The Steelers hardly ever ask him to win, they just don't want him to mess games up.

Drew Brees? Having a terrible year.

Donovan McNabb? You're nuts if you want McNabb instead of Eli right now.

Matt Hasselbeck? Philip Rivers? Jon Kitna? Derek Anderson? Matt Schaub? Alex Smith? No, no, no, no, no, no.

I don't think you can say that any of those guys is clearly better than Eli.

So, conservatively, you would have to put Eli in the top third of NFL quarterbacks. You might even have to put him in the top 25%.

I can live with that.

Your thoughts?

Wow!
We disagree big time. That's why this topic is fun. If you're not AT LEAST putting Eli in the top half of starting QBs in the league I don't think you're seeing the same things I am. He's far from perfect, but he's been too good this year to push him that far down the list.

hahaha
no dude, i was kidding.

i remember looking at king's article and being enraged that he actually put eli behind jp freakin' losman.  i knew it was ridiculous then and it certainly looks ridiculous now.

i agree with you that you can make the arguement that eli is the 6th best QB right now.

Eli's place
I agree with you mostly. I'd say you have to admit that Brady, Peyton, Favre & Romo have been better.

Stats-wise Derek Anderson is actually having a nice season. He has 100 yards more than Eli and has 3 more TDs to the same amount of INTs. Of course I wouldn't trade Eli for him, but he has a good argument. Palmer & Eli have similar TDs & INTs, but Palmer has more yards. This is probably due to the fact that the Bengals need to throw more though. So Eli is really right there with him. Eli's stats are better than the rest, so I'd say you can put him at least at #7 and maybe as high as #5.

If I'm going to break them, I'm going to break them both. - LT

As a 19 year old lifelong Giants fan I gotta say that I am so glad we finally have a real QB.  I don't remember Phil Simms but I sure as hell remember Dave Brown and Danny Kanell.

I think the most important thing about a top notch QB is that he makes you believe that they can get a touchdown when its needed.  How many times have we seen Eli go down the field and get a big touchdown or come from behind to win?

The Passer Rating system is silly.  More than anything a QB should win games.  He's 26 years old and has gotten us to the playoffs two years in a row.  I have no doubt that he's a top ten quarterback and I think his ceiling is as high as anyones in the league right now.

more eli-ness
I think everyone has such a negative perception of him because the sports media loves the storyline of a Peyton-Eli dichotomy.  In reality if you could compare Eli's style at QB to anyone in the league it would be Peyton.

At this stage in his career Peyton also had never won a playoff game.

Oh and Tony Kornheiser is an ass...

Kornheiser
I love Kornheiser ... on the radio, and on PTI. He is OK on MNF, but he's not necessary.

Off with the bangs...
Kornheiser has to do something with that small strip of hair comb over. Just cut it off... Keep him behind the camera. Anyway, I have been impressed with Eli, I agree with you ETVal. Eli is comming into his own, just give it time.

Eli
has definitely arrived.  He is currently on the left upper side of the bell curve and by the end of the year may be near the top.  And I would not trade him for Romo...no way!  And that is not a knock on Romo who is pretty damn good.

Eli
Its funny to me that whenever someone in the media talks about Eli the conversation is always about his body language.  In the past the consensus was he was showing a lack of leadershipy Brett Favre-ness.  But on this win streak everyone seems to agree that hes turned this around and thats one reason why the Giants are winning games.  I dont know about anyone else but he looks exactly the same to me after incompletions this year as he did last year.
