Foxboro, MA (Sports Network) - The New England Patriots have signed cornerback Jason Webster and placed rookie linebacker Shawn Crable on injured reserve because of a shin problem.
Webster signed with New England as a free agent in March, but was released by the club on August 26.
The 31-year-old veteran has played in 87 games with 74 starts in eight NFL seasons with San Francisco, Atlanta and Buffalo. He played in just one game with the Bills last season, breaking his forearm in Week 1 before going on injured reserve.
Originally selected by the 49ers in the second round of the 2000 NFL Draft, Webster spent four years with San Francisco and three with Atlanta before joining Buffalo. He has recorded 393 tackles and 11 interceptions, returning two for touchdowns, with six forced fumbles and one fumble recovery in his career.
Crable was chosen in the third round of the 2008 draft by the Patriots out of Michigan. He was inactive for each of the team's eight games this season.
