Lynch joins BBV All-Time Team

In a very close vote, Dick Lynch edged Mark Haynes, 24-20, for the first cornerback slot on our Big Blue View All-Time Giants Team.

As promised, now we will select the second cornerback. Since many of you wanted Mark Collins on the original ballot, the second corner slot will be between those two.

Go ahead and vote in the poll.

After this, we have one safety slot remaining and our defensive unit is complete.

Don't forget to vote

Today is the last day to vote for the first cornerback slot on our Big Blue View All-Time Giants Team.

You can do that here .

Right now it is a really close call between Dick Lynch and Mark Haynes. After that is settled, I will run a poll allowing you to choose between the second-place finisher and Mark Collins for the second corner slot.

Umm ... looks like I made a boo-boo

George Cronin has corrected me. Emlen Tunnell was a safety, not a corner. So, we will elect two cornerbacks and put Tunnell on the team as a safety. A couple of the sources I looked at had him listed as a corner. My fault.

I am getting chastised a bit for leaving Mark Collins off the balloting for cornerback. So, I will leave that up to you guys.

Use the poll to let me know if we should re-vote for the second slot, adding Collins to go up against whoever places second in the ongoing balloting. I will give you the weekend to vote on that.

Van Pelt wins; now on to cornerback

In an incredibly close vote, Brad Van Pelt has defeated Carl Banks in the balloting for the second outside linebacker position on our Big Blue View All-Time Giants Team.

The final tally was 52-50. It was amazing to watch as the vote unfolded. Banks led all week -- in fact I had to re-write this post because as of Thursday afternoon he was far enough ahead that I thought he was going to win comfortably. The Van Pelt voters rushed to the poll last night, though.

To be honest, I am thrilled with the results of that vote. I think it showed a little respect for the accomplishments of a player many current Giants' fans never saw play.

Let's move on to cornerback as we continue the voting for our Big Blue View All-Time Giants Team.

I feel very, very strongly that Emlen Tunnell belongs on this team. He is in the Hall of Fame (the only Giants' CB so honored) and holds the team's all-time interception record. Tunnell was also named All-NFL four times and played in nine Pro Bowls.

So, as I did with Lawrence Taylor, I am simply putting Tunnell on the team. You guys get to choose the second cornerback.

This is an interesting vote, and in now way do I see a clear-cut choice for the remaining spot.

Here are your nominees:

• Dick Lynch
• Mark Haynes
• Erich Barnes

I did not put Jason Sehorn on this list. I know darn well that if i did the younger BBV'ers would vote for him, and he simply does not deserve to be on this team. Don't get offended. Go look at the careers of the four guys listed. There is no way you can tell me Sehorn is better than any of those guys. Sehorn was never voted to a Pro Bowl or named All-Pro. Same with Mark Collins -- another guy some of you might be tempted to vote for.

So, for this one you guys are going to have to do a little work and brush up on your history. A little background on these guys.

Lynch -- In Giants' history, Lynch is much more than a color commentator on radio broadcast.  He played for nine years, eight with the Giants, and intercepted 37 passes. He was named All-Pro one time.

Barnes -- Totaled 45 interceptions in a 14-year career ... only spent four years with the Giants, but intercepted 19 passes during that time ... Appeared in six Pro Bowls and was named All-Pro once.

Haynes -- Made three Pro Bowls and was named All Pro twice in a 10-year career. ... spent his first six seasons as a Giant.

Don't forget to vote!

Don't forget to vote for the player you think should join Lawrence Taylor as an outside linebacker on our Big Blue View All-Time Giants Team.

Today is your last day, and the battle between Brad Van Pelt and Carl Banks is still too close to call. Vote here !

After that linebacker position is settled, we will move on and select the two cornerbacks who will be joining our defensive unit.

Van Pelt or Banks for outside linebacker?

I hope you all like the new platform! After last week's disappointment I was sneaky and didn't tell you it was coming today. Read the post below for all the new features, and for how to claim your account. And now, on with the show!

Let's take a quick break from discussing the Giants' draft picks to resume voting for our Big Blue View All-Time Giants Team.

When we left off we had decided to use a 3-4 defense so that both Harry Carson and Sam Huff could be on the team.

We had also decided that there was no need to vote on whether or not Lawrence Taylor belonged. We are simply giving LT one of the linebacker slots.

That means we are down to choosing the other outside linebacker. This is a simple two-horse race -- it's either Brad Van Pelt or Carl Banks. Make a case for anyone else you want, but these are the only two deserving guys.

So, let's look at the them.

The Case for Van Pelt

Before LT came along, Van Pelt was -- quite simply -- the best outside linebacker in the history of the franchise. Unfortunately for Van Pelt, the Giants had only one winning season in the 11 years he was with them.

Van Pelt did play a couple of seasons with Taylor and Carson as part of the historic 'Crunch Bunch.' Ironically, he left the Giants before the 1984 season and was replaced by Banks.

Van Pelt is a five-time Pro Bowler despite the lousy teams he played on and was nominated for the Hall of Fame in 2005. Unfortunately, stats on tackles weren't kept until 1984.

The Case for Banks

Banks was a one-time Pro Bowler who spent the first nine of his 12 NFL seasons with the Giants. His best season was 1986, when he had 113 tackles and 6.5 sacks.

Banks was a member of two Super Bowl championship teams.

To me, this is once again a test of how much credit Big Blue View Nation is willing to give to Giants who played before the Parcells Era.

3-4 or 4-3 alignment for our All-Time Team?

A point has been raised about our All-Time Team, and I will leave it to you to decide.

The fact that Keith Hamilton has been named to the team and we will have to leave either Sam Huff or Harry Carson has some folks asking if we should change the alignment to a 3-4 defense, drop Hamilton and have Huff and Carson as our middle linebackers.

You guys tell me. Vote in the poll below. As always click 'Entry Link' if you don't see the poll.

Middle linebacker -- Huff or Carson?

The voting results for defensive end and tackle are in, showing a clear preference for Giants of more recent vintage.

At end, Leonard Marshall will join Michael Strahan on our Big Blue View All-Time Giants' Team. He defeated Andy Robustelli, 30-25, in balloting.

At tackle, Roosevelt Grier was the top vote-getter.

In what I see as a clear indication that our voters are younger, and seemingly not that interested in honoring the old-time Giants, Keith Hamilton easily outdistanced Hall of Famer Arnold Weinmeister for the second slot.

Now we move on to what I think will be a very interesting decision -- middle linebacker. This is an obvious two-horse race. So, I won't mess around.

You get to choose between two Hall of Famers, Sam Huff and Harry Carson. No one else belongs in the conversation.

I am incredibly curious to see how this one turns out.

The Case for Huff

A five-time Pro Bowler and two-time All Pro, Huff was a Giant from 1956 thru 1963 before spending the last five years of his career in Washington. He was named to the 1950s All-Decade Team. Huff was named the top linebacker in the NFL in 1959. He had 30 career interceptions.

The Case for Carson

Carson was named to nine Pro Bowls in his 13-year Giants' career. He anchored the dominant Giants' defense of the last '80s.

So, which is it going to be gang? Huff, the old-time great? Or Carson, the more recent immovable force in the middle of a dominant Giants' defense?

Considering the results on the defensive line, my money is on Carson.

BBV Nation names Landeta all-time punter

In an incredibly close vote, Sean Landeta has been named as the punter on Big Blue View Nation's all-time Giants' team.

Landeta received 27 votes to 25 for current Giants' punter Jeff Feagles.

Continuing with the kicking theme, let's name the all-time Giants' placekicker next.

To help you younger guys out, going forward I will try to add some stats and biographical information on players whenever it is available.

Here are your nominees for placekicker.

Pete Gogolak -- Gogolak was the first soccer style kicker in NFL history. He holds several Giants' kicking records: -- Giants' all-time leading scorer, with 646 points
-- Giants' franchise records for most points after touchdowns attempted (277) and made (268)
-- Most PATs in a game (eight vs. Philadelphia on Nov. 26, 1972)
-- Most consecutive PATs (133)
-- Most field goals attempted (219) and made (126).

Gogolak spent two years wit the AFL's Buffalo Bills, and was a Giant from 1966-74.

Pat Summerall -- Yes, long before Summerall made a name as one of the best play-by-play men in NFL history he was a standout placekicker. Summerall kicked for 10 seasons in the NFL, the last four as a Giant. His best season was 1959, when he went 30-for-30 in PATs and 20-for-29 in field goals.

Matt Bahr -- Bahr spent just three of his 19 seasons in New York. From Wikipedia: He is best remembered for his performance in the 1990 NFC Championship Game on January 20, 1991, as he set an NFC Championship Game record with five field goals (including a 42-yarder as time expired) to lift the Giants past the 49ers 15-13. He also kicked what would prove to be the decisive field goal in Super Bowl XXV on January 27, 1991, as the Giants beat the Buffalo Bills 20-19.

Brad Daluiso -- Kicked for the Giants from 1993 to 2000. In 1994 he made all 11 field-goal attempts, and in 1996 he went 24-for-27 (88.9%).

NOTE: Click the poll at the end of the story to vote on your choice. If you don't see the poll, click 'Entry Link' and you will be taken to a page including the poll.
