2012 NFL Draft
Giants Rookie Contracts: David Wilson, Jayron Hosley, Matt McCants Sign Deals, According To Report
Editor's Update: Rueben Randle has also reportedly signed.
Reports out of New York have the New York Giants reportedly agreeing to terms with three of their 2012 draft picks. The new collective bargaining agreement includes a rookie salary cap, which makes it easier for NFL teams to sign their draft picks, without fear of holdouts.
The players recently signed: First round pick, David Wilson, third round pick, Jayron Hosley, and sixth round pick, Matt McCants. Terms have yet to be disclosed on Wilson's contract, but Mike Garfolo from The Star-Leger speculates:
According to his slotting as the 32nd overall pick, Wilson was in line to receive a signing bonus of about $3.3 million. But unlike the other picks, that bonus is more negotiable. At least that's the way it was explained to me. I'll get you the full details when they're available.
The only two picks who remained unsigned are second rounder, Rueben Randle and seventh rounder, Markus Kuhn. Even unsigned, rookies can still participate in mini-camp if they sign an injury waiver, as stipulated by the collective bargaining agreement.
2012 NFL Draft Round 7: Giants Select Markus Kuhn, DT, NC State
Well, the Giants' 2012 draft has concluded, barring any weird, last-minute trades. They chose defensive tackle Markus Kuhn with their seventh round pick, the 239th overall in the draft. Amazingly, this was just the second defensive player the Giants chose, the other being CB Jayron Hosley in Round 3. Many of you were hoping for DE Cam Johnson of Virginia, but the 49ers swooped in two picks earlier. It sure seems like part of the 49ers' strategy this offseason is to try and make the Giants worse, doesn't it?
But hey, let's see what Markus Kuhn is all about. Here is an overview on his profile on NFL.com:
Kuhn is a big interior defensive lineman who only started for one year at North Carolina State. He showed good effort in that year in all areas of his play, is good to run down plays from the backside and will be a force working from within. He struggles when getting blocked by double teams and doesn't play very instinctively yet, but he is a developmental project and has late-round value to a team that can afford to wait on his development.
DT was definitely a position of need for the Giants at this point, and hey, they also wound up with a guy that looks like Matthew Stafford. Seriously though, Kuhn is known as more of an interior pass rusher than a run-stuffer, but also is considered as raw (who isn't at this stage of the draft?)
What do you guys think now that the Giants have completed their draft by going RB-WR-CB-TE-OT-OT-DT?
2012 NFL Draft Round 6: Giants Select Matt McCants, OT, UAB
Hey everyone, are you still with us? It sure was a while between picks--three hours, almost to the minute actually. But the Giants selected another offensive tackle, Matt McCants of Alabama-Birmingham. McCants is 6'6" and 308 lbs., meaning he's almost exactly the same size as the tackle they selected two rounds earlier, Auburn's Brandon Mosley. McCants was first team All Conference in Conference USA his senior year. Sideline Scouting says that McCants is very raw but is quick and athletic for a big man. Heck, let's let them do the talking......
Long, lean body type with frame to add some weight and get stronger... Good combination of size and quickness... Shows athleticism to set quickly and ride defenders past the pocket... Flashes quick feet to stay squared to the defender... Absorbs initial contact well and resets quickly
And hey, here's a fun fact for you guys--McCants played the tuba in the high school band before joining the football team his senior year. So there's always that to fall back on. But hopefully McCants will make the team and along with Mosley anchor our O-line for a few years.
The Giants have a seventh rounder coming up, #239 overall. So we'll see you back here in a bit....
2012 NFL Draft Round 4: Giants Select Brandon Mosley, OT, Auburn
Now that's what I'm talking about! The Giants addressed two glaring needs in the fourth round, choosing TE Adrien Robinson from Cincinnati at No. 127 overall, and now they have chosen OT Brandon Mosley from Auburn with the 131st overall pick, also in the fourth round. Mosley only played on the offensive line for just two seasons, moving from tight end, where he played in junior college before coming to Auburn. And at 6'6", 314 pounds, OT was an easier move for Mosley, at least size-wise.
Here is what Pro Football Weekly had to say about Mosley in its draft profile:
Athletic, inconsistent, blue-collar converted tight end who did not take his game to the next level as a senior, but has upside worth investing in. At worst, should develop into a versatile, swing backup, but has starter potential as a right tackle if he's able to make strength gains.
And then here is more from NFL Draft Scout. Is Mosley going to develop into the big left tackle we need here to protect Eli Manning's blind side for years? Time will tell.
What do you guys think?
2012 NFL Draft Round 4: Giants Select Adrien Robinson, TE, Cincinnati
Well, it took four rounds and 127 picks, but the Giants finally took the tight end we all expected them to--Adrien Robinson from Cincinnati. This is a player that visited quite a few teams recently, and his stock kept rising. Here is what Scout.com has to say about Robinson:
Robinson, 23, is extremely athletic at nearly 6-foot-5 and 264 pounds, running the 40-yard dash in 4.51 and 4.58 seconds at his campus Pro Day workout. He registered a 39 1/2 inch vertical leap, an 11-3 broad jump, an 11.59 in the 60-yard shuttle and a 7.11 three-cone drill.
Here is a clip of Robinson catching a 72-yard pass against Miami of Ohio this past season. You have to love how he went up for the ball, fought for it, and then fought for yardage. He should fit in just fine on Tom Coughlin's tough-minded offense.
Now, can we please go get an offensive lineman? Our next pick is very soon, so we will find out momentarily what that pick will be.....
2012 NFL Draft, New York Giants: Final Thoughts On Coby Fleener
Over at SB Nation New York I just did a roundup of 10 mock drafts to see if there was any consensus on what the New York Giants might do with the 32nd selection of the 2012 NFL Draft on Thursday night. Five of those 10 mock drafts selected Stanford tight end Coby Fleener [Prospect Profile] for the New York Giants.
That should hardly be thought of as a stunner. Fleener has been connected to the Giants by mock drafters and draft analysts for months now. The Giants, of course, lost both Jake Ballard and Travis Beckum to knee injuries during the Super Bowl. They signed Martellus Bennett, but that still makes two tight ends down and one tight end brought in.
Interestingly, though, I have seen increasing speculation on Twitter today that the Giants would pass on Fleener at 32. Ballard even predicted today that the Giants would not take a tight end in the first round despite his own belief that he will not play in 2012.
2012 NFL Draft, New York Giants: Final Thoughts On A First-Round Running Back
There is one thing, and only one thing I know for certain when it comes to what the New York Giants will do with the 32nd selection of the 2012 NFL Draft on Thursday night. What is that one thing? It is that Giants general manager Jerry Reese does not give a hoot about the 'Big Blue View Rules for Draft Success.' Nor, to be honest, should he.
That brings to our next 'final thoughts' discussion. Should the Giants violate my rules and take a running back with the 32nd pick? If so, which running back should it be?
2012 NFL Draft, New York Giants: Final Thoughts On Stephen Hill
Throughout the day today I will post some 'final thoughts on many of the players to whom the New York Giants have been connected with their selection Thursday night in the 2012 NFL Draft. That pick, of course, is the 32nd and final one of the evening.
Thought I would start with Stephen Hill, the Georgia Tech wide receiver I selected for the Giants in my own mock draft.
