Chris Canty activated, Da'Rel Scott placed on IR

Chris Canty - Al Bello

The New York Giants defense got a boost Saturday with the announcement that veteran defensive tackle Chris Canty has been activated.

The New York Giants' defensive line got a boost on Saturday when the team added veteran Chris Canty to the 53-man roster. Canty, in the event you did not know, has been on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list after having offseason knee surgery.

The Giants put running back Da'Rel Scott on injured reserve to make room for Canty, a move that had to be expected after it was announced earlier in the week that Scott, a second-year man, had undergone knee surgery during the week.

Canty, an eight-year veteran and fourth-year Giant, had offseason knee surgery after starting all 20 regular season and postseason games last year at right defensive tackle.

"He's in outstanding shape, condition-wise," Coughlin said of Canty on Friday. "He hasn't been hit, obviously, but we'll come up with the right formula (for playing time)."

Canty will bolster a defensive tackle position that will be missing veteran Rocky Bernard (quad) for a third straight week. Rookie seventh-round pick Markus Kuhn has been starting, with Marvin Austin the only other defensive tackle on the roster.
