Matt Millers 7 Round Mock

Earlier today Matt Miller of Bleacher Report posted his full 7 Round mock draft. His picks for the Giants were interesting and there were some players that were taken after the Giants pick that could also be good fits for the team. Below is all seven picks for the New York Football Giants.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

His mock draft started out strong but then in my opinion it fizzled out. I believe there are other needs on the team that take priority over a RB or a TE. Offensive line is one of the biggest needs and he does not even take one until the seventh round and it is a center which is not even a need. So I am going to modify his mock draft using some players that were taken after the Giants picks.

Round 1

Zach Cunningham, ILB

The Giants need linebackers especially in the middle. Zach Cunningham is a great run defender and has the skills to be a good coverage guy as well. He tallied 125 total tackles and 16.5 for a loss. He would bring a much needed jolt of talent to the LB group and he would break the 33 year streak of not taking a LB in the first round.

Round 2

Chris Wormley, DL

Whether or not Hankins and/or JPP are re-signed the Giants need depth on the defensive line. Jay Bromley is a nice rotation piece but cannot play many snaps. The Giants need a good 3-technique defensive tackle and Wormley was exactly that for Michigan.

Round 3

Dion Dawkins, OT

This team needs help on the offensive line. It has been very evident that when Eli has the time to let a route develop and step up in the pocket to make a pass he can be as good as anyone in the league. It has been years since the Giants have had a good OL. Ereck Flowers is not being moved off left tackle and that is coming from Jerry Reese and company so he will be at left tackle for the foreseeable future so that leaves RT and RG. Bobby Hart has been serviceable at best and has room to grow. Some believe that Dion Dawkins is better suited for guard in the NFL while others think he can stay at RT. Either way he adds depth and has a good shot as anyone to take the starting job next spring.

Round 4

Josh Reynolds, WR

Josh Reynolds is a long and athletic wide receiver prospect. He uses his size and length to his advantage by routinely high pointing the football. His commitment to plucking the ball away from his frame is also important to his success. Reynolds combines his size with excellent body control which allows him to adjust to poorly thrown balls. He has a knack for helping his quarterback by making the acrobatic catch. His willingness to work back to the quarterback is also extremely helpful. He is a solid overall route runner thanks to his fluid movements. Reynolds can cleanly get in and out of his breaks which helps him create sold separation. He shows good awareness in that he can find the open spots in a defense. Whether or not Cruz is cut at the end of the season, Josh Reynolds could be part of the best receiving corps in the NFL joining OBJ, Shep, Rodger Lewis Jr, and possibly Cruz.

Round 5

Joe Williams, RB

Rashad Jennings time with the Giants is coming to the end and he will probably be cut at the end of the year. There can even be a case made that Vereen could be cut due injuries. I believe that Perkins is the future but after him what is left, Bobby Rainey who is a free agent and Orleans Darkwa who was hurt all year. That is why RB is somewhat of a need. Joe Williams is not one of the big names (i.e Fournette, Cook, Foreman, McCaffrey, etc.) but he his production speaks for himself. In 2016 at Utah he rushed for 1407 yards on 210 attempts (6.7 yards/carry) and had 9 receptions for 107 yards (11.9 yards/catch). He also scored 10 touchdowns. He could be a good runner for the Giants behind Perkins and maybe even form a combination similar to Jacobs and Bradshaw were years ago.

Round 6

Caleb Peterson, OG

Reasoning is the same as it was for Dion Dawkins but Peterson could replace an aging John Jerry who is also going to be a free agent. Peterson is an impressive run blocker but needs to work on his pass protection. Sixth round picks are usually day one starters so with a little development Peterson could turn into a decent RG for the Giants. Think of the way the Giants developed Bobby Hart. A seventh round pick in 2014, and 2 years later he was being used as a starter. Worst case Peterson is used as a rotation piece on run plays.

Round 7

Brady Gustafson, QB

The Giants get a Brady of their own haha. Eli is at the end of his career and it is time to start to think of the future. Whoever is drafted will not start for a few years which means you can draft a project to some degree. Brady Gustafson is not the most well known name considering he plays for Montana but he is a physically talented prospect with traits NFL scouts look for at every level. He's 6'7" and 230-plus pounds with an effortless throwing motion. He's a pocket passer by trade, but he's also athletic enough to maneuver around the pocket. These types of tools automatically get quarterbacks noticed. He can learn under Eli for a year or two and then take over. If you wanted to not draft a QB this year then the plan of attack would be to re-sign Josh Johnson and draft one next year. I could also see the Giants drafting a kicker with this pick.
