The Defensive Line Mixup

As of now it looks like JPP will be leaving the New York Giants. I would like to thank him for his efforts in getting us our fourth Super Bowl and I wish him the best moving forward. That being said, here are my thoughts on the defensive line and the major decisions which need to be made.

Let's start with Robert Ayers. His 9.5 sacks and 2 forced fumbles this season were a career best for the veteran, proving he deserves a contract and a starting role in Big Blue's system. I don't think I was the only one who was surprised by Ayers' efforts this season.

Next on the list is the free agent market. What an interesting time of year. The two defensive ends that stand out to me are Mario Williams and Malik Jackson. Mario Williams, a decorated 10 year veteran who has participated in 4 pro bowls is perhaps one of the biggest names available for the Giants. I can see him providing the spark the Giants need in the trenches while being a valuable resource to the young Owa Odighizuwa similar to how Michael Strahan and Osi Umenyiora were to Justin Tuck. For Malik Jackson, the Super Bowl champion delivered 5 sacks, 1 safety and 7 pass deflections this season. Not to mention he worked alongside Robert Ayers for two seasons in Denver. If we keep Ayers, Jackson could be a good fit.

Now it is draft time, "and with the 10th overall pick, the New York Giants select....." A'Shawn Robinson. That's right, an interior defensive lineman. Robinson showcased his athletic ability and incredible strength at Alabama this season, not to mention his 6'4'' 307lb build. A player of his size and talent can be dangerous in the NFL. Putting Robinson next to Hankins on the inside could be a lethal combination for the Giants.

So my idea for the defensive line consists of re-signing Robert Ayers, bringing in either Mario Williams or Malik Jackson, and drafting A'Shawn Robinson. This will give us a well rounded defensive line and get us back to the elite defensive level we once had.
