A review of the roster and some improvements to be made.

If we look at the roster we can see that improvements must be made. Here are some of my ideas on each position.

QB- Eli and Nassib are fine no problem here.

RB- I like Jennings, he fits this offense. Vereen is also a very good player who fits. Williams is not, I like the guy but he does not fit this offense and has not played well. Darkwa has shown some good running instincts but is not the answer. I think this position needs an upgrade of some sort. Either a draft pick or signing a second tier free agent is necessary.

WR- Other than Beckham we have nothing of any quality that would be considered a #2 WR. Randle is a FA, do we re-sign him? Even if we do I do not want to go into the season with him as a #2 WR. An upgrade here is even more important than a RB.

TE- I like Tye a lot and think he will be a very good player if he improves his blocking. We need an inline blocking TE that can catch a little if not a true dual threat traditional TE. Either a draft pick or a FA is necessary like the WR and RB position a starter is not necessary as much as a depth signing or draft pick that can play significant snaps. I have zero confidence in Donnell, he is not a winning player. Can we get the Black Unicorn back? Maybe a player like Vannet in the third or Hunter Henry in the second?

OT- We're good here with either Flowers or Beatty starting on either side. Hart & Schwartz can play tackle as well as Pugh. If we can secure depth by all means. I never ever want to see Newhouse on this roster let alone on the starting line.

OG- Again we are good but I would like to try and get another body either in FA or the draft. We don't need a star we need a solid player. I do not have confidence in Schwartz as any more than a swing backup, Jerry is a backup emergency player and nothing more. I'd rather not need Jerry and sign someone with some upside or draft a player in the mid rounds like rd 3, Landon Turner for instance.

Center- We are good here and hopefully Jones takes the backup and guard depth position.

DE- Oh this is a hot mess, this is the place that needs the most attention in free agency. We'll have to see what is available in free agency first before we go into the draft. Even if we find a stud in the draft at the DE position it still needs a huge influx of talent, especially a pass rushing type or 2. My hope is JPP comes back with the ability to grab with that hand and signs a one year contract. Ayers re-signs and Mario Williams is cut and signs here. This defense is made for a guy like Williams. There are also some other good DEs in FA hopefully their team won't have the cap space to re-sign them.

DT- I think we are better off than people think. Hankins is top notch. Bromley when he got a chance looked very good, not great. Hughes looks good as a backup to Hankins. This draft is filled with quality DTs and I like Butler best as far as value and upside. There is always backup type depth in free agency at the DT position.

LB- This is another problem area like DE. Kennard is an all pro quality player but is never 100%. Beason is done. I like Brinkley and if we improve on the other linebacker position with some speed I have no problem with him as the starting MIKE. We do need depth as well as starters though. There will be some LBs in FA, we need at least one as a starter and find a way to keep Kennard healthy, it is imperative.

DB- I think we re-sign Prince and whatever backups we have that are FAs, except Hosely. If there is a good value in free agency by all means add another FS and CB. Any influx of talent will improve the unit but not at the expense of the biggest need which is DE, especially pass rushing DEs.

Even if we sign lower tier DEs that have some pass rushing ability and keep rotating them, we need to find some new ways to create a pass rush even using a 5 man line some times. Spags is going to have to be creative. there is no way we can fix this defense in one off season. Yes we also need help at the linebacker position but it's the pass rush that needs the most attention.

The offense is very close to being a super bowl quality unit and is already highly competitive, just a few holes, mostly depth wise. We do need a #2 WR for sure though. We can live with what we have at the TE position if we have to. Same for the offensive line, we need depth but can live with the people we have as long as they are healthy. Beatty and Flowers, Pugh, Richburg, Hart, Schwartz, Jerry, Jones and hopefully a quality solid guard in FA that won't break the bank.

Like we all have been saying for a few years now health is the key factor to the success of the Giants. If you can take anything away from the Super bowl it was not only the need for a good pass rush but notice both teams had a minimal lose of starters due to injury. Do the Pats make the Super Bowl if they had all their starters healthy? They might have beaten Denver by out scoring them if they had all their offensive lineman healthy. They also had injuries on defense. The same could be said of the Packers.
