PAT Controversy: a proposal

The mothership has published on the new PAT experience at the ProBowl:

The NFL experimented with slimmer and taller uprights, shrinking the distance between goalposts from 18 feet to 14 feet. Additionally, extra points were pushed back to make them 35-yard attempts.

Since, I didn't like it [nor did it Vinatieri!], I will dare to suggest something different. Here is the idea:

a. after the touchdown, put the ball at the 10-yard line;

b. give the scoring team a new set of downs (downs-and-PAT); and

c. let the clock run normally.

The way to score and scoring value would not change:

a. if any team can run the ball into the opponent's endzone, it scores two points;

b. if the offensive team can pass the ball into the opponent's endzone, it also scores two points;

c. if the offensive team can kick the ball within the opponent's goal posts, it scores one point.

It is somewhat similar to college football's OT.

It makes teams going for two, but they could still set for one in the end.

It gives the defense opportunities for a pick-two.

It looks like football.

It does not need of any change on the ball, hashmarks, goal posts, etc.

It does not increase the length of the game, since the clock would still be running.

LET'S DO THIS!
