Mississippi State Bulldogs 2015 NFL Draft Scouting Report

This is a team that should be extremely tough especially on defense. They feature if not the best defensive lineman in the country then one of the best in Chris Jones. The defense as a whole features a few standouts and they will be a team that'll be hard to score on. The offense is good led by an emerging Dak Prescott. They'll be a lot of fun to watch.

#52 Ferlando Bohanna (rSr.) MLB 6-0 230. Has appeared in 23 games with 2 starts. Is the cerebral guy in the LB group. Will make for a good coach. UDFA.

#75 Blaine Clausell (rSr.) LT 6-7 315. Has appeared in 36 games with 25 starts (all at LT). Big, strong with extremely long arms. Has good athleticism. Has always played LT but it isn't his calling on the next level. Feet aren't fast enough to deal with speed rushers. Tends to lunge and play off balance resulting in ending up on the ground too much. Is unsuccessful in his attempts to block on the second level. Is more of a RT or G prospect. 6th-UDFA.

#63 Dillon Day (rSr.) C 6-4 300. Has appeared in 26 games with 22 starts all at C. Excellent measurables for the position. Does a consistent and excellent job at shotgun snapping. Makes line calls and always seems to pick up the right guy. Controls the defender who comes into his area. Not the greatest athlete but he's decent in this area. 5th-UDFA.

#92 Kaleb Eulls (rSr.) DT 6-4 295. Has appeared in and started 39 games. Veteran is stout in the run game but comes off the field on 3rd downs. Played thru a bad foot injury last season and didn't practice all spring. Should be a go for fall camp. He's still a valued member of the defensive rotation but not a guy we'll see get drafted. UDFA.

#6 Malcolm Johnson (rSr.) TE 6-2 231. Has played in 32 games with 11 starts. Lines up primarily in the slot. Was targeted 46 times and reeled in 63% of those throws (29 catches). Wasn't a focal point of the offense as planed. Has good hands. Knows all the receiving positions so knowledge of the offense is a plus. A below average blocker. Doesn't have any special traits as far as speed, size or athleticism. UDFA.

#12 Robert Johnson (rSr.) WR 6-1 211. Has appeared in 33 games with 14 starts. 19 of his 34 receptions on the year went for 1st downs. Has worked on being more physical in an effort to get more YAC. Not a deep threat, only a possession type receiver. Doesn't have breakaway speed. Hasn't been highly productive and most likely won't be this season because of the depth and talent. UDFA.

#4 Jameon Lewis (rSr.) WR/KR 5-9 195. Has appeared in 39 games with 12 starts. Dynamic playmaker! Showed his immense ability when finally given the chance on a full time basis. The only FBS player to have multiple receiving TD's (5), multiple rushing TD's (3) and multiple passing TD's (3). Is an electric KR. Is one of the strongest players pound for pound. A very tough tackle. Has a second gear with the ball in his hands. Has great balance and break your ankle type moves. Very well rounded so being a QB in the wildcat isn't so far fetched. Hasn't had any real durability issues but his size will be held against him. A special talent. 3rd-4th round.

#5 Jamerson Love (rSr.) CB 5-10 175. Has appeared in 36 games with 12 starts. Great speed. Good instincts and isn't afraid to mix it up in the run game. Is tough but he isn't really strong. Isn't slight but is on the smallish side. Plays a lot of off coverage so he's untested as a bump and run CB. Doesn't factor in much in the run game. Had to be a NCB because the size on the outside on the next level is too much for him. UDFA.

#78 Damien Robinson (rSr.) RT 6-8 335. Has appeared in 37 games with 0 starts. A mountain of a man with really long arms. Is powerful and can maul in the run game. Is slow footed and not much of an athlete. His footwork is subpar and has never been able to crack the starting lineup. May not make it thru the season as teams RT because of his pass protection deficiencies. UDFA.

#22 Matthew Wells (rSr.) OLB 6-2 215. Has appeared in 39 games with 20 starts. Tremendous athlete. 4.3 40? Quick, fast and fluid in coverage. Can cover and shut down slot receivers and RB's. Can stick his head in there in the run game and playing close to the LOS isn't an issue. Can play S/LB position because his skill set lends to versatility. Doesn't fill up a stat sheet but its a byproduct of how good he is in coverage. If your looking for a true OLB he's too light for the position on the next level. He's more of a S and even there he hasn't played it in the traditional sense. He's a tweener but one who'd do well in the right defensive scheme. 6th-7th round.

#23 Taveze Calhoun (rJr.) CB 6-1 184. Has appeared in 25 games with 12 starts. Long, lanky and athletic. A leader. Every pass in his area is contested. If a WR catches a pass he doesn't get much YAC. Is a sure open field tackler. Known as a "film rat" he absorbs as much info on his opponents as possible. Is a solid run defender. On the lean side. Looks skinny and at times his hits don't get the result I'm sure he'd like. Needs to add about 10 pounds of muscle. Could be a franchise type CB in time. Late 1st-early 3rd.

#9 Justin Cox (Sr.) FS 6-3 190. 4.3 40? CC transfer. Has appeared in 13 games with 1 start at CB (against Bowling Green). Moved back to FS full time this spring which is his more natural position. Elite speed with great jumping ability. Has very good hands which helped him make 11 INT's in the CC ranks. Has excellent range when roaming the defensive backfield. Really struggled at CB last season. Good tackler but not great and could stand to use more upper body strength. Should make a seemless transition back to FS but was out of position for a year so you wonder if it stunted his development some. 6th-UDFA.

#93 P. J. Jones (Sr.) DT 6-3 296. Has appeared in 32 games with 14 starts. Solid build and has anchor strength. solid fundamental player. a leader along the DL. Gets pushed around too much and isn't much of a pass rusher. Played on an injured foot himself last year and didn't participate during the spring. Will be in a time share at arguably the teams deepest position. UDFA.

#26 Kendrick Market (rJr.) SS 5-10 188. Has appeared in 25 games with 12 starts. Compact, solid tackler who was known more for his ST prowess before becoming a key figure defensively. May take a backseat as a starter but he should be a key contributor. Doesn't declare.

#50 Bernardrick McKinney (rJr.) MLB 6-5 245. Has appeared in 26 games with 23 starts. 4.5 40 & a 41.5 inch vertical!!! Is one of those types you'd consider a physical freak. Hyper active player. If there's action he's somewhere around it if not in it. Is really stout in the running game. Hard to budge but gets the movement he needs on OL to make the play. Can sift thru and get around garbage unscathed. Can get cut blocked and pop up to make the play. His speed allows him to prevent speed backs and WR's from getting outside for big gains. Can line up just about anywhere and cause havoc rushing the passer. Leader without question when it comes to getting "Juice Points". A bit stiff in the hips and at times prevents him from changing direction and making plays. Has to protect his long legs better. He's susceptible to cut blocks which could be an injury waiting to happen. Has the all around physical gifts to get drafted extremely high. Top 25 pick.

#15 Dak Prescott (rJr.) QB 6-2 235. Has appeared in 23 games with 7 starts (4-3). Excellent athlete! Dual threat QB. Looks like a passer first by nature. Has a plus arm. Can make all the throws. Accuracy struggles when he's on the move. Overall 58.8 completion %. Doesn't have a great sense of when and where the pocket is collapsing in on him. Struggles when forced to go thru his progressions. Tends to throw flat footed. Style of play with the running may lead to him getting hurt. Doesn't slide, he'd rather put a hit on someone. Isn't a finished product by a long shot. Appears to be a project at this point but there is tremendous upside there. Doesn't declare.

#35 Josh Robinson (rJr.) RB 5-9 215. Has appeared in 25 games with 2 starts. Primary backup to LaDarius Perkins a season ago. Aptly named the "Bowling Ball" because of his running style and short stature. Has really good straight line speed and is all business moving north to south. Has good hands out of the backfield and is an improved blocker. Should be in line for the lead role in a committee type situation. Doesn't declare but has a very good season.

#91 Preston Smith (Sr.) DE 6-6 267. Has appeared in 34 games with 11 starts. Very good athlete. Is stout and has lined up everywhere along the DL. Great frame and it lends itself to the versatility of playing DE in a 4-3 or a 3-4. Appears to have improved his get off on the snap. Gets a good amount of pressure even if he doesn't get to the QB. Doesn't have many pass rush moves. Hasn't been really productive as far as sacks go. Only had 2.5 last season and 2 came in one game. Physical makeup and athleticism get him drafted for sure but the production hasn't been where it should be for such a talent. May very well be a better pro than collegiate player. 5th-7th round.

#42 Beniquez Brown (rSo.) OLB 6-1 235. Has appeared in 13 games with 3 starts. Stood in for an injured Deontae Skinner. Had 39 tackles on the year and 33 of them came on running plays. High energy and loves to hit, hard. Well versed in all three LB spots. Has a ST mindset first and foremost. It's where he made his bones from the outset. Can make line calls which is really good for a young LB. Moves really fast to the football. Doesn't declare but will make a lot of noise this season.

#48 Ryan Brown (Jr.) DE 6-6 260. Has appeared in 20 games with 1 start. Big athlete with prototypical size. Has come a long way in the weight room. Is ready as far as being stout in the run game. Isn't there as a pass rusher. Doesn't have any moves. Has to develop a better understanding of where the football is at all times. Has a tremendous upside but will need more time to bring out his pass rush potential. Doesn't declare.

Non draft eligible player(s) of note:

#96 Chris Jones (So.) DT/DE 6-5 300. Has played in 13 games with 3 starts. The epitome of freakish talent!!! Hugely talented and blessed with superior athleticism. 4.6 speed for someone so big. Can beat most T's around the corner and has the power to go head to head and destroy interior OL. Personality is as big as his game. Will be under heavy consideration for the 1st overall pick in the 2016 draft barring injury or any unforeseen setbacks.
