Kendall Gaskins hoping to break through with Giants

Kendall Gaskins was a touchdown-scoring machine as a running back in college, but has yet to score an NFL roster spot. Let's take a closer look at Gaskins as we continue our player-by-player profiles of the 90-man roster the Giants will bring to training camp beginning July 21.

2013 Season In Review

Gaskins signed with the Bills as an undrafted free agent after completing his career at the University of Richmond. He was released at the end of training camp.

2014 Season Outlook

The Giants signed the 6-foot-1, 238-pound Gaskins to a reserve/futures contract after last season. When Gaskins was at Richmond, he was a touchdown-scoring machine and I had a chance to speak with him prior to the 2013 NFL DraftHere is some of what I wrote:

Glance at the numbers from Kendall Gaskins' career as a running back at the University of Richmond and they are fairly unremarkable. Until, that is, you look in the 'touchdowns' column, where you find the number 34. That's 34 rushing touchdowns in 452 carries, a touchdown every 13.2 carries in four years with the Spiders, who play at the FCS level.

As a senior, the 6-foot-1, 238-pound Gaskins scored 13 touchdowns on 148 carries, one every 11 carries.

"It just comes down to who wants it more. On every goal-line situation there's always going to be a free runner, whether its the safety or a corner or a linebacker," Gaskins said. "You've gotta drive, put your head down and take on whoever is going there and be physical."

Gaskins has shown an ability to catch the ball during OTAs and mini-camp. With Rashad Jennings, Andre Williams, Peyton Hillis, Michael Cox and David Wilson (if he is cleared to play) ahead of him on the depth chart, Gaskins would appear to have a big mountain to climb to make the roster. He does, however, appear to have a skill set that makes him worthy of keeping an eye on.
