Kevin Williams: Giants 'in the mix,' but so is retirement

Kevin Williams - Brace Hemmelgarn-USA TODAY Sport

Free-agent defensive tackle Kevin Williams, who visited with the Giants recently, might retire.

The New York Giants "remain in the mix" for five-time All-Pro defensive tackle Kevin Williams. So, however, do the Seattle Seahawks. And the possibility of retiring from football.

The 33-year-old Williams has spent his entire 11-year career with the Minnesota Vikings. The Pioneer Press says that Williams, after making $4.9 million a season ago, seems unwilling to play for the veteran minimum salary or close to it.

"If it's not worth the risk of going back out there, I can't say I'll do it," Williams said. "I don't see (taking a low-value deal) at this point, but you never know.

"I'm not one of those guys that's afraid to go home. I'm comfortable going home."

Williams remains a productive player. He had 3.5 sacks in 15 games for the Vikings and a team-best Pro Football Focus rating of +7.3. The Giants lost defensive tackle Linval Joseph, who basically took Williams' spot in Minnesota. Entering the 2014 NFL Draft the Giants have Cullen Jenkins, Johnathan Hankins, Mike Patterson and Markus Kuhn at defensive tackle.
