New York Giants Targets Day 3: Plus a Little Optimism

Elsa

Who are players the Giants could target on Day 3 of the 2014 NFL Draft? We take a look.

Woah, woah, woah let's all calm down here. I understand that the New York Giants' picks thus far in the 2014 NFL Draft seem a little far-fetched, but if you had told me before the draft that the Giants would leave the first three rounds with an interior offensive lineman, a wide receiver and a defensive tackle, I don't think anyone could have possibly been upset. And I know that everyone here has been focusing on the "the Giants need to play it safe" mantra leading up to the draft -- what's more safe then multiple-year starters who are team captains, productive and are considered hard workers? That's what all three guys have in common -- that's the difference when you draft safe players (Jay Bromley) vs. tantalizing talents (Louis Nix). The GIants are giving you people what you want! And you're very angry about it.

The Weston Richburg pick was absolutely not a reach. There may have been higher-rated players on media big boards available, but I've mentioned this multiple times -- the Giants (and other teams) have given plenty insight into the way their big board is constructed over the years and it's not as simple as 1-256. It's more like it's in tiers and rows, and most teams also don't list 256 players on their board --  there might only be 150 players or so (the Giants have said they don't remove anyone from the board). Richburg was the No. 1 center in the draft in a lot of places and he was considered a second-round value, maybe a third-round pick, but also maybe a first-round pick. This is fine value -- he was drafted about where he was likely to be drafted -- and he was the No. 1 player at his position in the second round row. The only position other than specialists for which you can say the No. 1 player at the position was still available.

Now Bromley could have been a reach in the third round, but the fact that the Giants selected him OVER other defensive tackles still available who had much bigger names (Will Sutton, Louis Nix, Daniel McCullers) let's you know he absolutely must have been the best player at the position on their board -- and I'd also point out that of the best remaining defensive tackles available he might have been the best remaining 4-3 3-tech. He is a similar style to Aaron Donald except he has a lot more size (long arms at 33 1/5 inches , heavier at 306 pounds at 6'3), without sacrificing plus athleticism (5.06-second 40-yard dash). He's not Donald, but he's a good player -- though I personally think there was a 60/40 chance he would available in the fourth round -- with a shot at being drafted by either Dallas or Chicago in the third round.

But you have to remember that NFL teams' draft boards often look different than CBS (or Big Blue View) big boards. For example, we were hoping to target Jerick Mckinnon in the fifth round as an intriguing player -- he's gone. Dri Archer is not usually considered a top-100 guy -- gone. Cornerback Dexter McDoulge -- who is that guy? Who the heck is the offensive lineman who was drafted from Missouri?

Day 3 targets

At the end of the first day you could see that there was a lot of lineman talent and the Giants ended the day snagging two trench players. Based on what's left early today there are a lot of solid cornerbacks available -- guys like Clemson's Beshaud Breeland, Virginia Tech's Antone Exum, the Florida combination of Jaylene Watkins and Marcus Roberson and Oklahoma's Aaron Colvin.

There are a lot of good guards left -- if you count Zack Martin as a guard that's seven guards who have been drafted (Martin, Su-a Filo, Bitonio, Gabe Jackson, Trai Turner, Nebraska's Spencer Long and Notre Dame's Chris Watt) but intriguing players like Cyril Richardson, and David Yankey are still available.

Running backs

Lache Seastrunk is one of my best players available and is a dynamic player. De'Anthony Thomas, Ka'Deem Carey, Storm Johnson, Isaiah Crowell and Andre Williams are all still available.

Also keep in mind that today is not filled with guys without question marks -- productive guys who are athletic (and healthy) are already well off the board. All the players taken today are risks, and sometimes the names you won't even recognize (Jacquian Williams) could end being the best of the bunch.
