NFL Free Agency 2014: What's left at cornerback for the Giants?

Walter Thurmond breaks up a pass - Otto Greule Jr

The New York Giants have been aggressive in trying to stabilize their cornerback situation during 2014 NFL Free Agency period. They re-signed Trumaine McBride, a pleasant surprise in 2013, checked in on Darrelle Revis before he ended up with the New England Patriots, hosted Tracy Porter for a visit before he signed with the Washington Redskins and hope to host Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie this weekend. They might not get a chance, however, if Rodgers-Cromartie signs with the New York Jets first.

So, if the Giants either miss out on Rodgers-Cromartie or decide that the price tag (DRC has been said to be looking for $10 million annually) is too steep what is left on the rapidly drying-up cornerback market for the Giants?

Let's drop a few names. And no, at this point I have seen no reports of interest in any of these guys shown by the Giants or visits planned to East Rutherford.

Terrell Thomas

T2 is a favorite among Giants' fans and a popular guy in the locker room and among the media. Truth is, though, if the Giants REALLY wanted Thomas to return next season they would have locked him up already. They seem to be, more or less, giving him the Justin Tuck treatment. The Giants' approach to Thomas appears to be 'go ahead and look an offer you like -- we'll get back to you later if you're available and we haven't found anyone else.'

Thomas played pretty well last season, but after three torn ACLs he is not going to regain some of the speed and explosiveness he had back in 2010, and despite the fact that he made it all the way through the 2013 season he is a huge health risk.

Walter Thurmond III

Thurmond is a four-year veteran of the Seattle Seahawks who will be 27 next season. He seems to fit the 'under 30 with upside' profile GM Jerry Reese appears to be seeking this offseason. Thurmond had a +4.8 Pro Football focus grade and a 67.5 passer rating against in 480 snaps last season. The Giants have not been connected to the 5-foot-11, 186-pound Thurmond at all during the free agency process, and I'm surprised by that.

Antonio Cromartie

The three-time Pro Bowler was cut by the New York Jets. He's a big name, has a big reputation and carries a pretty hefty amount of baggage. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Cromartie will be 30 next season and didn't play very well in 2013, ending up with a -12.0 PFF grade and a 100.7 passer rating against. I'm not sure Cromartie is anywhere close to Tom Coughlin's cup of tea.

Other Available Corners

Older corners like Carlos Rogers (33 next season), Champ Bailey (soon-to-be 36), Asante Samuel (33) and Drayton Florence (33) are out there. None fit the 'up-and-coming' profile, obviously but if the Giants aren't comfortable with what they have perhaps a player like Florence might be worth considering as a depth move. Florence, an 11-year veteran, had a +7.2 PFF grade and a 68.8 passer rating against while playing for the Carolina Panthers last season.
