A day that seemed relatively quiet for the New York Giants, where the biggest news up to now had been the defection of defensive end Justin Tuck to the Oakland Raiders, has ended with the Giants signing former Baltimore Ravens linebacker Jameel McClain.

The Giants had agreed to terms with Seattle Seahawks linebacker O'Brien Schofield, but that deal fell apart when Schofield apparently failed a physical.

McClain, who turns 29 in July spent six season with the Ravens before being cut in a salary-cap move. He visited the Giants prior to the official start of free agency, which he was able to do because he was not on an NFL roster at the time.

McClain, 6-foot-1, 245 pounds, has experience at inside and outside linebacker. McClain will likely play the strong-side (SAM) linebacker for the Giants, with Spencer Paysinger and Jacquian Williams sharing the weak-side (WILL) position. Keith Rivers, who played the strong side for the Giants in 2013, signed a free-agent contract with the Buffalo Bills.

McClain joins guard Geoff Schwartz, center J.D. Watson and running back Rashad Jennings as free-agent additions to the Giants.
