Giants' Free Agency 2014: Day 2 preview, Day 1 recap

Jacoby Jones visits the Giants on Wednesday - Evan Habeeb-USA TODAY Sports

A look ahea dto Day 2 of free agency for the New York Giants, and a look back at Day 1.

Day 2 of NFL Free Agency 2014 is here. What will it bring for the New York Giants? The Giants had an incredibly active and hugely successful Day 1 of free agency, reeling in offensive guard Geoff Schwartz, running back Rashad Jennings, linebacker O'Brien Schofield and re-signing several of their own players to affordable contracts.

'Invictus' did an outstanding job Tuesday night recapping what the Giants gained, and what they lost as the free-agent frenzy began for real.

Let's look ahead to what we already know about what is on the agenda for Wednesday, and also take a look back as I offer some of my own thoughts on what the Giants did on Tuesday.

What Lies Ahead

Wednesday we find out exactly how much money the Giants spent on Schwartz to help anchor a rebuilt offensive line and Jennings to be the bell cow of their running game. Beyond that, the day promises to bring much more activity. Here is what we already know:

-- Veteran cornerback Tracy Porter will visit the Giants today. Porter, 28 next season, is a six-year veteran who had 67 tackles and two interceptions while starting all 16 games for the Oakland Raiders last season. He has also played for the New Orleans Saints and Denver Broncos. Porter had a Pro Football Focus grade of -12.4 in 2013 and a passer rating against of 93.7.

-- Veteran wide receiver/kick returner Jacoby Jones is visiting the Giants today. Jones, 30, next season, is a seven-year veteran who would provide depth at wide receiver and -- more importantly -- an explosive presence as a kickoff and punt returner. The Giants were among the worst teams in the league in the return game last season. Jones, who playedfor the Baltimore Ravens last season, could change that. He averaged 12.5 yards per punt return a season, and averaged 10.5 yards per return for his career. As a kickoff returner Jones averaged 28.7 yards in 2013 and has a career average of 26.7 yards.

-- Adam Schefter tweeted this morning that defensive end Justin Tuck will be visiting the Oakland Raiders. Andre Brown is also drawing interest from Oakland.

-- Fullback Henry Hynoski is visiting the Detroit Lions later this week.

-- The Giants have also officially announced the waiving of center David Baas.

Day 1 Thoughts

-- The interest thing about the signing of Schwartz is that there is a great deal of speculation that the Giants will use the versatile Schwartz at right tackle, not at left guard. Some analysts believe the Giants will kick Justin Pugh inside. There has also been speculation that Pugh would move to left tackle with Will Beatty kicking inside. Perhaps coach Tom Coughlin or GM Jerry Reese will provide some clarification on the plan today.

-- Love the Jennings' signing. He will turn 29 later this month, but that shouldn't matter very much. He has only 387 career carries and can catch the ball out of the backfield. Jennings provides an upgrade from Andre Brown and sold insurance for the Giants in the event David Wilson doesn't make it all the way back.

-- The O'Brien Schofield signing is intriguing. He has had limited playing time -- 11 starts in a four-year career. He has 11.5 sacks, however, and has a reputation as a speed-rusher from the outside linebacker spot. He is somewhat of an unknown quantity as a full-time player, but when is the last time the Giants had an outside linebacker who could be a presence as a pass-rusher?

-- I don't mind the guys the Giants lost. It would have been nice to keep Linval Joseph, but the idea they would lose him is why Johnathan Hankins was drafted. Going all the way back to Cornelius Griffin more than a decade ago, this is how the Giants have handled the defensive tackle position -- drafting, developing, replacing and filling in with low-cost, quality veterans.
