JR's undying love of 5 Star Recruits

More specifically, JR's love of 5 star recruits 'revisited'. Revisited because I am not the first one to notice this. However, what started as a hunch quickly became legend and then as verified fact. So in honor of NCAA Football Signing Day just passing by, I decided to bring up this topic again.

When picking players in the Draft or in FA, there is no stone JR leaves un-turned. By the time college players (specifically 5 star recruits) start becoming household names, you can be pretty sure the Giants scouting department already has 2-3 years of notes on them. Dont believe me?? I got yo proof!

As per every site that stated it, JR became director of Pro Personnel 4 years before he became GM. So I am guessing they meant 2003. So when this hunch first came about people naturally started looking at 2003. So lets look at 2003 together.

Here are Rivals top 20 High School Recruits (I should have done all 5 star, instead of top 20 but I already did all the cutting and pasting and I didn't really want to do anymore) ((regardless, top 20 still gets the point across))

Ernie Sims
Reggie Bush
Whitney Lewis
Andre Caldwell
Kyle Wright
Prescott Burgess
Tony Hills Jr.
Jorrie Adams
Paul Oliver
Greg Olsen
Martin O'Donnell
Dee Webb
Wesley Jefferson
LaMarr Woodley
Nathaniel Robinson
Joe Cohen
Chad Jackson
Ofa Mohetau
Kregg Lumpkin
Robert Meachem

There are, to my knowledge, no Giants on this list. I was once told that when you start a new job, it takes 2 years to get a grasp of what you are doing. So, ideally, if what I am saying to be true, 2004 would be a slow roll and 2005 would be going in full force. So lets look at those.

2004 2005
Adrian Peterson Derrick Williams
Theodore Ginn, Jr Patrick Turner
Early Doucet Eugene Monroe
Rhett Bomar Melvin Alaeze
Keith Rivers Rey Maualuga
Willie Williams Fred Rouse
Brandon Miller Mark Sanchez
Derrick Harvey Martellus Bennett
Jeff Schweiger Jr. Reginald Youngblood
Xavier Lee Jonathan Stewart
DeMario Pressley DeMarcus Granger
Anthony Morelli Kenneth Phillips
Chad Henne Marlon Lucky
Kyle Williams Callahan Bright
Chris Patterson Jason Gwaltney
Matthew Tuiasosopo Ryan Perrilloux
Cameron Colvin Tray Blackmon
Franklin Okam DeSean Jackson
Fred Davis Justin King
Jeff Byers Alex Boone

See, that is Five Giants right there. Bomar, Rivers, TBU, Phillips and Perrilloux. Granted TBU wasnt a giant for very long but it goes to show what JR meant when he said TBU is our highest rated FA.

Disclaimer - I posted all names just because its interesting as heck to see the before and after.

This now brings us to our next stop.

2006 2007 2008 2009
Percy Harvin Jimmy Clausen Terrelle Pryor Bryce Brown
Andre Smith Joe McKnight DaQuan Bowers Rueben Randle
Chris Wells Eric Berry Mike Adams D.J. Fluker
Gerald McCoy Ryan Mallett Julio Jones Sheldon Richardson
Sergio Kindle Carlos Dunlap Patrick Johnson Matt Barkley
Matthew Stafford Everson Griffen Darrell Scott Trent Richardson
Vidal Hazelton Marvin Austin Marcus Forston Russell Shepard
C.J. Spiller Ronald Johnson Baker Steinkuhler Devon Kennard
Allen Bradford Torrey Davis A.J. Green Vontaze Burfict

Sam Young Chris Galippo Matt Kalil Dre Kirkpatrick
Myron Rolle James Wilson Michael Brewster Manti Te'o
Brandon Spikes Terrance Toliver R.J. Washington Ray Ray Armstrong
Reshad Jones Chad Jones Blaine Gabbert Alex Okafor
Brandon Graham Noel Devine Tyron Smith Jacobbi McDaniel
Taylor Mays Tray Allen Nigel Bradham Donte Moss
Robert Rose Marc Tyler Omar Hunter Janzen Jackson
Stafon Johnson Chris Donald Matt Patchan Garrett Gilbert
A.J. Wallace Chris Culliver Jermie Calhoun Patrick Hall
Al Woods Ben Martin Kyle Rudolph Craig Loston

5 players make the Giants; Bradford, Austin, Jones, Hill and RR. a 6th one (Wells) gets a shot to show off but ultimately cannot make the team. One thing to notice, unless cut from team, 2007 players at earliest would be just finishing their 4 year rookie contracts. So when looking for FA, don't be surprised if players from 2006 or 2007 start filling our needs in FA.

Which brings us too this years draft, here are the top 20 for last year and this year.

2010 2011
Ronald Powell Jadeveon Clowney
Seantrel Henderson Curtis Grant
Kyle Prater George Farmer
Sharrif Floyd Cyrus Kouandjio
Keenan Allen De'Anthony Thomas
Robert Woods La'El Collins
Dominique Easley Hasean Clinton-Dix
Owamagbe Odighizuwa Karlos Williams
Da'Rick Rogers Ray Drew
Marcus Lattimore Malcolm Brown
Michael Dyer James Wilder Jr.
Jackson Jeffcoat Trey Metoyer
Robert Crisp Tony Steward
Lamarcus Joyner Brandon Williams
Latwan Anderson Sammy Watkins
Jordan Hicks Ishaq Williams
Dillon Baxter Anthony Johnson
Chris Martin Jarvis Landry
Spencer Ware Demetrius Hart
Christian Jones Kris Frost

Something interesting to note, none of these players are 1st rounders. The closest I think anyone can point to is RR and he was beaten out by DW. So looking at these players, I see a bunch of names sticking out like sore thumbs for our picks as early as the 2nd round.

Easley, Jeffcoat, Joyner, Cyrus, Clinton-Dix, Watkins, Crisp, Wilder JR might already be Giants.. They just dont know it yet.
