Chiefs 31, Giants 7: Tom Coughlin critical of offense, special teams

Jamie Squire

Giants coach Tom Coughlin was critical of the team's offense and special teams play after Sunday's loss.

Tom Coughlin knew precisely where to pin Sunday's 31-7 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.

"The second half offensively and the mistakes on special teams, you're not going to have a chance to win like that," Coughlin said. "I thought our defense played hard today. Had we had some offense to go with it, particularly in the second half if only to get them off the field for a while the finish might have been better."

Coughlin referred to the second half, during which the Giants were outscored 21-0, as a "debacle."

The Giants were in the game until late in the third quarter when Dexter McCluster ran a punt 89 yards for a touchdonw to give Kansas City a 17-7 lead. The Giants were never competitive after that.

The punt return for a touchdown was the second surrendered by the Giants this season. Coughlin was not pleased with punter Steve Weatherford.

"The special teams errors hurt very much. The punt return again, down the middle of the field to the excellent returner. If you do it continuously it's going to hurt you, and it did," Coughlin said.

The Giants also missed a 44-yard field goal and had a special teams penalty give the Chiefs a first down.

The Giants got a touchdown on a 69-yard pass to Victor Cruz, but did virtually nothing else on offense.

"There's no continuity whatsover. There's no rhythm. We don't make any first downs. Play calling is like throwing a dart at a board," Coughlin said, indicating we was not calling the play-calling bad. ""Our inability to do anything with the ball in the second half, there's no excuse for that. That's poor, that's very poor."

Where do the Giants go from here?

"We go back to work. What else is there for us to do?," Coughlin said.
