The New York Giants begin preparations on Monday for their season-opening game this Sunday against the Dallas Cowboys. The Giants begin an NFL season that will end, of course, with the Super Bowl being played at MetLife Stadium. Can the Giants become the first team to play in, and win, a Super Bowl in their home stadium?
"Our expectations are always very high. Sometimes they're met, sometimes they're not," head coach Tom Coughlin said recently. "I think we said the other day we are a work in progress. I believe that. We're going to get better as this thing goes along and hopefully we'll make some good progress here in this week."
That would be a change for the Giants who, in recent years, have started fast and sputtered to the finish line. Three of those four seasons, of course, ended without reaching the playoffs. One ended with a Super Bowl title.
The Giants set their 53-man roster on Saturday and were not awarded any players on waivers Sunday. That does not mean the roster as constructed today will be the one that faces the Cowboys. Players who cleared waivers can now be signed as free agents. The Giants also have to decide whether or not to place injured running back Andre Brown on IR with a designation to return, a move that would necessitate adding someone to the active roster.
The Giants also filled seven of the eight slots on their practice squad Sunday.
