As part of their season preview Q&A, SB Nation has asked writers from each of the network's NFL web sites to answer the question 'What are the odds of your head coach getting fired?"
Well, for Tom Coughlin of the New York Giants I think you know the answer. That would be a big, fat zero. No chance. Not with two Super Bowls in his pocket and a possible Hall of Fame resume. He is one of the two greatest coaches in franchise history. The other, Bill Parcells, is part of the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class Of 2013.
Now, if you want to re-phrase the question and ask 'How much longer will Coughlin coach the Giants?," that's a completely different discussion.
Coughlin will go when he's good and ready to go -- regardless of general manager Jerry Reese putting everyone on notice during training camp.
When will that be? Who knows? He is 67 years old, but shows no sign of being any less passionate, energetic or committed to trying to win than he was several years ago.
Would a third Super Bowl title after this season convince him to ride off into the sunset at the pinnacle of his profession? Would a season that ends with the Giants missing the playoffs for the fourth time in five years leave him tired of the struggle and wanting to get out?
We don't know the answers, and Coughlin has not provided any hints. But, fired? Not gonna happen.
