Athlon Sports: Tom Coughlin 5th-best coach in NFL

Athlon Sports ranked Giants coach Tom Coughlin the fifth-best coach in the NFL

Tom Coughlin is the fifth-best coach in the NFL, according to a ranking by Athlon Sports.

The rankings encompass more than simply wins and losses, and delvesdeeper into "consistency, longevity, level of competition, support, championships and how that all compares to history."

Coughlin, who has amassed a 151-121 regular-season record, a 12-7 postseason record and has helped the New York Giants to two Super Bowl championships, is among the winningest coaches in terms of playoff victories.

"The hard-nosed Coughlin has two Super Bowl championships and is seventh all-time with 12 career postseason wins. He is the oldest coach in the league, and after 17 seasons, won't be around for too much longer. He has seven total division titles in his career but has won 10 or more games just once in the last four years. He May never be viewed as one of the league's greatest but he is consistent and has overcome plenty of adversity."

Leading the rankings is San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh, who is 24-7-1 in his first two seasons as an NFL head man. Behind him is New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick, Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy and New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton.

Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh, Atlanta Falcons coach Mike Smith, Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, St. Louis Rams coach Jeff Fisher and Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan round out the top 10.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Jacksonville Jaguars first-year coach Gus Bradley is considered the worst coach in the league. Bradley, 47, will make his head coaching debut this season after spending last season leading the Seattle Seahawks defense.

Carolina Panthers coach Ron Rivera, Oakland Raiders coach Dennis Allen, Cleveland Browns coach Rod Chudzinski and Detroit Lions coach Jim Schwartz round out the bottom five on the list.
