2013 NFL Free Agency: Would signing Tim Hightower be worth it?

Paul Frederiksen-US PRESSWIRE

Tim Hightower recently visited the Giants. Would signing him be a good idea?

In the middle of this last week former Arizona Cardinals and Washington Redskins running back Tim HIghtower reportedly paid a visit to the New York Giants. Why on earth would they bother? The Giants have enough running backs.

Let's take a closer look at what the Giants have.

Current running backs on the Giants roster:

David Wilson
Andre Brown
Da'Rel Scott
Ryan Torain

Unsigned draft pick:

Michael Cox

When I look at the list, I don't think bringing Hightower to the team is a terrible idea. That of course depends on Hightower looking like his former, healthy self. If he does prove worthy he can bring a different kind of depth to the squad.

With Ahmad Bradshaw gone the Giants need a running back who can block. Hightower also would bring a veteran presence to the group. Hightower was once a running back who scored 23 touchdowns in his first three years in the league. His best season was 2010, when he gained 736 yards on 153 carries (4.8 yards per carry) with five touchdowns for Arizona.

If the Giants bring Hightower to the team he would battle with Scott, Torain, and Cox for a spot on the roster. But like I said earlier, it depends if he shows up healthy. Hightower missed the 2012 season with a torn ACL, an injury the Giants are unfortunately all too familiar with. I don't think bringing Hightower in for a look will hurt. What have the Giants got to lose?

So I ask you this: Should the Giants give Hightower a shot?
