2013 NFL Free Agency: Charles Woodson draws interest from New York Giants

Charles Woodson - Kirby Lee-US PRESSWIRE

Veteran safety Charles Woodson has several suitors, with the Giants apparently being among them.

The New York Giants continue to pick through the free-agent market for bargains, with word now coming that they are expressing interest in future Hall of Famer Charles Woodson.

The Giants recently signed bargain-bin linebacker Aaron Curry and lost out in effort to bring in return man Josh Cribbs as they look to supplement their roster following the 2013 NFL Draft.

Pro Football Talk reported that Woodson, a 15-year veteran who will be 37 next season, has an offer from the Denver Broncos and has visited the Oakland Raiders. The eight-time Pro Bowler spent eight seasons in Oakland and seven with the Green Bay Packers.

Woodson, who played only seven games in 2012, is strictly a safety at this point in his career and would provide the Giants with another option for the three-safety packages they like to employ.

After losing Kenny Phillips via free agency the Giants signed Ryan Mundy and drafted Cooper Taylor. They also have Antrel Rolle, Stevie Brown, Will Hill and Tyler Sash.

Valentine's View

For me, this is kind of a curious development. Yes, the Giants lost Phillips but they have already added Mundy and Taylor. Hill has shown tremendous promise in the 'box' safety role Woodson would likely play, and Taylor was seemingly drafted for that. Perhaps this is just due diligence by the Giants. Perhaps they aren't completely convinced Hill, an undrafted free agent with a troubled past, is a player they can trust with an expanded role on defense.

In all honesty it's hard to know what to think because it's hard to know what Woodson has left to offer. We just have to see how this plays out.
