Free Agency: Giants taking risk with Victor Cruz

NFL Free Agency 2013 opens at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday and, by far, the biggest question for the New York Giants is whether or not they will end up having to match an offer for restricted free agent wide receiver Victor Cruz.

If you have been paying attention you know that the Giants are placing the first-round tender on Cruz, the value of which would be $2.879 million for the 2013 season. You also know that the organization is aware that there is risk involved in not reaching an agreement with Cruz on a long-term deal prior to the beginning of free agency.

It's always about the money, of course. Ralph Vacchiano of the Daily News reported that the issue between the Giants is that Cruz has has been seeking to be paid like a No. 1 receiver. Despite his 168 catches, 2,628 yards and 19 touchdowns over the last two seasons the Giants apparently don't see Cruz that way.

Vacchiano also reported that no player with a first-round tender has received an offer since 2003 and added it has been three years since any RFA received an offer.

The Giants seem well aware that could change once Cruz hits the market.

Victor Cruz could end up with mountain of cash

The National Football Post speculates that Victor Cruz could be the highest paid of all free-agent wide receivers this off-season, if he can get any offers as a restricted free agent. Where might that offer come from?
