Tom Coughlin turns page, looks ahead to Bears on Thursday

Highlights from Giants' coach Tom Coughlin's Tuesday meeting with the media.

New York Giants' coach Tom Coughlin knows that the Chicago Bears' defense, averaging 2.8 takeaways per game this season, pose a tremendous challenge for his turnover-prone team. The Giants have turned the ball over a league-worst 20 times, 4.0 per game.

"I'm hoping that we can protect the passer," Coughlin said. "They've got some outstanding pass rushers. They spread it around, too. Their sacks, I know their linebackers have four of them. They spread it around. The front is physical and tough. The corners are tough. They play hard and they're very good ball strippers."

Coughlin has said the Giants turnovers issues are "correctable," but Tuesday made it sound as if that is only the case if the players want to make that a priority.

"They are correctable, but it’s a ball security issue. Sometimes when you see an opportunity, but percentages are against you, you can’t take a chance," said Coughlin, perhaps tweaking quarterback Eli Manning for some of his risky throws.

The Giants will play Thursday without starting running back David Wilson, out with a neck injury. The Giants will mae due with the veteran Brandon Jacobs and with Da'Rel Scott, cut last week and re-signed on Tuesday.

"Brandon had some good runs the other day and Da'Rel had some good runs when he was here," Coughlin said.

Coughlin said that defensively the Giants have to deal with Bears' wideouts Brandon Marshall (31 catches) and Alshon Jeffrey (28).

"They're a tremendous concern. They're outstanding players and they've got the numbers to back it up," Coughlin said.
