Report: Giants acquire linebacker Jon Beason from Carolina

Deal is reportedly pending a physical.

The New York Giants have reportedly acquired linebacker Jon Beason in a trade with the Carolina Panthers, gambling that the three-time Pro Bowler can regain the form he showed before tearing his achilles tendon in the Panthers' 2011 season opener.

Beason, 28, has played in only seven games since suffering the injury. The Giants will reportedly send the Panthers a conditional late-round draft pick for Beason, if he passes a physical today.

Former NFL player and current MSG Network analyst Roman Oben awoke to the news this morning and had this reaction:

There is some question as to whether or not he can pass his Giants' physical, considering that he has also had micro-fracture surgery on his right knee and surgery to repair a torn labrum.

Beason made the Pro Bowl three straight seasons from 2008-2010. Beason had more than 100 tackles each of his first four season in the league. This season he had actually lost his job as Carolina's weak-side linebacker to former Giant Chase Blackburn, so it's obvious he isn't the player he once was.

SB Nation's Panthers web site, Cat Scratch Reader, said "It's a mutually beneficial trade for both sides. The Giants can take a swing in the dark for some defensive help while the Panthers can move forward with a more reliable outside linebacker.

For me, this appears to be a no-lose situation for the 0-4 Giants. If Beason can be a  sembalnce of his former self he improves the defense. If not, the Giants can easily let him go as the remaining three seasons on his contract are voidable.
