Woody Johnson and the Jets want to speak with Marc Ross about their GM job - Jim McIsaac

One day after Black Monday firings resulted in five openings for general managers and seven for coaches around the NFL a pair of New York Giants' executives are being sought after for those GM openings.

The New York Jets, who fired Mike Tannenbaum, have requested and received permission to speak with Marc Ross, the Giants Director of College Scouting.

Gang Green Nation apparently would heartily approve of the Jets bringing Ross on board, writing:

Ok, what is this team, and what happened to the Jets? They make a clean and quick break from a general manager who was not working out, and within hours are targeting highly qualified and highly regarded people as potential replacements? It is almost like Woody Johnson suddenly decided he wanted to be in charge of an honest to goodness quality NFL franchise.

The Carolina Panthers, where former Giants general manager Ernie Accorsi is leading the search for a new general manager, have asked to interview both Ross and long-time Giants executive Dave Gettleman.

SB Nation's Panthers web site, Cat Scratch Reader, writes:

Dave Gettleman and Marc Ross deal with two sides of the same coin. The former from an NFL perspective, as Senior Pro personnel analyst, and the latter as the director of college scouting. There have been reports that the Carolina Panthers are looking for someone who has a long-term scouting background, which both men would satisfy.

Gettleman has been responsible for assisting the coaching staff with the evaluation of players in-house, as well as assisting in the scouting and organization of data on potential free agents.

Ross has been largely credited with recent New York Giants' successes through the draft, including Jason Pierre-Paul, and a spate of successful wide receivers taken in the last few drafts.

Giants' GM Jerry Reese was asked on Monday about the interest shown in Ross.

"Everything I see from people like yourselves says that Marc the hot prospect. We’ll see. Marc has done a terrific job for us," Reese said. "If he ends up going somewhere else, it will be a loss for us, but we’ll be happy for him if that’s the way it goes down."
