When we began writing 2013 NFL Draft stories months ago we were often speculating on the possibility that the New York Giants could draft the talented but raw Brigham Young University defensive end Ezeial Ansah with the 19th overall selection. In recent weeks, that has seemed impossible, with Ansah often mocked among the draft's top five selections.
As the draft closes in, however, there are some who seem to believe the board is shuffling, that pass-rushers are falling and that Ansah could -- amazingly -- land right in the Giants' lap.
The highly-respected Greg Cosell has Ansah going to the Giants in a mock he just published for Yahoo! Sports.
I know for many he’s a top-five player in this draft. They see the natural athleticism, the size/speed combination and the rare arm length, and intuitively project "big-time player." That may happen. By means of comparison, Ansah did not show the kind of pass rush skills that Jason Pierre-Paul displayed at South Florida, and Pierre-Paul was seen as exceedingly raw. Ansah is not close to being a finished product, but he competed on every play, and he showed the ability to maneuver his body in almost any position necessary. His size, body type and movement profile best at DE, but I can easily see him aligned inside at DT in sub-package situations. Ansah is a fascinating prospect who needs to be taught much as a pass rusher, so there’s a significant leap of faith, but the movement and motor are there.
Cosell is not alone. Pat Kirwan and Will Brinson of CBS Sports both have Ansah falling to the Giants in their most recent mocks drafts.
Thoughts, Giants' fans? Is this something you could realistically see happening?
