2013 NFL Draft Prospect Profile: Emmett Cleary, OL, Boston College

Bob DeChiara-US PRESSWIRE

Today we're going to use our 2013 NFL Draft prospect profile to look at an offensive line prospect for the New York Giants from Boston College. Emmett Cleary is a guy the Giants will reportedly be checking up on, he plays a position of need, and the Giants have amassed a number of Boston College players since Tom Coughlin became coach (Chris Snee, Mathias Kiwanuka, Mark Herzlich).

Cleary is a Day 3 prospect, but I'm trying to get to as many of the players the Giants visit with, or show have reportedly shown interest in at the Pro Days or combine, as possible.

Pros

A lot of size (6-foot-7, 316 pounds with 34 1/4-inch arms). Cleary is solid in pass protection, shows pretty good agility and is an aggressive blocker. Cleary fires off the ball pretty well and has a good initial punch.

Cons

Needs to get stronger and is pretty average in terms of athleticism (as far as NFL offensive linemen go). He doesn't always play with great leverage and isn't a great blocker in the open field.

Does He Fit With The Giants?

Anyone who can potentially play the offensive line in any capacity at the NFL level fits with the Giants this off-season. I think it'll be a major upset if the Giants don't draft at least one offensive lineman in this draft, though no one knows how early they'll go with the offensive line.

Final Thought

He's a developmental prospect who offers a lot of size and length. He's not an explosive NFL athlete, but he's suitable, he projects as a career backup but a guy who could be a valuable swing tackle who plays both left tackle and right tackle. You never say a guy can't be a starter because you can't measure heart, but he's a late-round developmental tackle prospect who doesn't offer the upside of say a guy like Matt McCants, who the Giants took in the sixth round last year. He's a guy who fills out the back of the depth chart, and every team needs those guys. He'll likely be selected in the sixth or seventh round if he's drafted.
