If the New York Giants want to select a defensive end in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft, the good news is there could be plenty of them available. Damontre Moore of Texas A&M, Bjoern Werner and Tank Carradine of Florida State and Datone Jones of UCLA are among the defensive ends who could be available at No. 19.
The bad news? Highly-respected NFL Network draft guru Mike Mayock is not impressed by the top end of the defensive end class.
"I was excited to see Bjoern Werner, Damontre Moore and Barkevious Mingo because all I heard about was that they were top five or ten picks," Mayock said in an interview with Lance Zierlein of The Sideline View.
After watching tape, Mayock said he was "kind of disappointed in that group of kids who were hyped so highly."
Werner has often been mocked to the Giants at 19. Mayock said he did not see anything special when watching Werner. Mayock told Zierlein that Werner projected as no more than a "solid base end."
Of Moore, Mayock said "whenever he played a quality offensive tackle he got shut down."
Valentine's View: Zierlein did not pass along any Mayock remarks about Carradine. I am coming around more and more to the view that if the Giants want to go defensive end I'd like to see it be Carradine. Of the defensive ends who might be available he might be the one most likely to end up being a special player.
