Marvin Gentry-US PRESSWIRE
Alabama right tackle D.J. Fluker was recently mocked to the Giants. Today we take a closer look at Fluker in our latest 2013 NFL Draft prospect profile.
I thought today we'd take a look at Alabama offensive linemen D.J. Fluker with our 2013 NFL Draft prospect profile because he was recently mocked to the New York Giants and could be a player they would look at some time.
Fluker has terrific arm length -- his 87-inch wingspan is absolutely ridiculous. His length and size gives defensive ends a tough time winning the initial battle at the line of scrimmage. Fluker is a very physical run blocker with heavy hands.
At 355 pounds, Fluker is heavier than he needs to be and even though he's not sloppily built, he could benefit from dropping some weight, which might improve his athleticism. Fluker does not have exceptionally quick feet, could do a better job of sustaining blocks as a pass blocker and run blocker. He's not a left tackle in the NFL, but could be a very good right tackle.
Player comparison: Phil Loadholt (I've seen our own Invictus make that comparison many times, and then also NFL.com). I think Andre Smith is a fair comparison, as well
Does He Fit With The Giants?
With the way the right tackles played for the Giants last year. ANY right tackle prospect fits with the Giants. I think Fluker is going to be a solid, but not great pass protector at right tackle. Most defenses line up their stronger, less athletic defensive end up against the right tackle. Those players are going to struggle getting around Fluker's insane wing span and strong upper body.
Big Board Rankings
CBS Sports - 28th
National Football Post - 46th
Mocking the Draft - 30
Big Blue View Board - Not top 50
I think it would be early for the Giants to take Fluker at 19, if they don't move down in the draft. I think Fluker will be a very good right tackle in the NFL, but that's not a position teams generally look to fill in the top 20 of the NFL Draft, more of a second-round value.
