Giants Training Camp: Friday 8/2 practice report

Justin Pugh will miss time with a concussion - USA TODAY Sports

News and notes from Friday's New York Giants practice

Justin Pugh, the New York Giants' first-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, missed practice Friday at the Quest Diagnostics Training Center with a concussion, according to various reports from beat writers at practice.

Per Conor Orr of the Star-Ledger, "Pugh got hit in the head yesterday during practice." Pugh will thus have to pass the league's concussion protocol before returning to practice.

Other Injury Notes

Cornerback Corey Webster "feels strain in groin" and sits out practice. Hakeem Nicks expects to be back on Tuesday.

Nicks: 'Sky's the limit' for receivers

In addition to talking about his injury status, wide receiver Hakeem Nicks talked Friday about what the development of second-year wide receiver Rueben Randle can mean to the offense:

"Rueben Randle has been making great progress. When Mario Manningham left, we kind of lost that third wide receiver spot, which we use a whole lot, definitely the Super Bowl year. Bringing that back to the table is definitely going to help u," Nicks said. "With Eli distributing that ball around, I think the sky could be the limit."

Kiwanuka glad to play one position

Mathias Kiwanuka has been moved back to defensive end this season, and he is happy he won't be shuffled from the line to linebacker, as has been the case in recent years:

"It’s definitely easier because you’re not worrying about what you’re missing in the other meeting room and what’s being said and trying to track coaches down, in their off time, to get all the rest of the information. Whatever this team asks me to do, I’m going to do it," Kiwanuka said. "I think it will have a huge effect. I mean … sitting in one room, you can focus on one job and one task. I feel like it puts you in a much better competitive advantage to watch film, to study, to work on your own technique."

Practice Notes

The Giants practiced in full pads, but did no goal line work. ... Practice will begin at 1 p.m. ET Saturday rather than the customary 1:30 p.m. ET. That will be to accommodate head coach Tom Coughlin, who will travel to Canton immediately after practice to see Bill Parcells be enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
