Michael Vick: Quarterback controversy in Philadelphia?

Matt Kartozian-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

Could there really be a quarterback controversy in Philadelphia?

After the Philadelphia Eagles were drubbed by the Arizona Cardinals, 26-7, on Sunday, Eagles head coach Andy Reid gave starter Michael Vick what amounted to little more than a lukewarm endorsement.

"Right now we're with Michael," said Reid. "That's what we're doing. We'll evaluate it as we go."

Bleeding Green Nation isn't quite sure what to make of Reid's pronouncement.

Does Reid saying "we'll evaluate things as we go" mean that Vick is on the hot seat? There is no doubt that Vick has not been playing great- his interceptions and fumbles are one of the main reasons the Eagles have lost one game and almost lost two more. Still, Vick has led the Eagles to come from behind wins- which makes it unlikely Reid is ready to pull the plug on Vick- or even considering it. The Eagles are still 2-1 and tied for the division lead- not exactly a textbook time to change quarterbacks.

Neither am I, to be honest.

Vick has been mediocre at best this season. He is ranked 29th in the league after three games with a passer rating of just 66.2. Vick has completed just 55.2 percent of his passes, throwing 6 interceptions while tossing only 3 touchdown passes. He has also fumbled 5 times.

The Eagles' backup quarterback is Nick Foles, a rookie who was drafted in the third round. Foles was impressive in preseason, completing 40-of-63 passes (63.5 percent) with 6 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. His passer rating was 110.1.

Would Reid really switch, or is he just trying to get to Vick. The left-hander was great in 2010 for Philly with 21 touchdowns, 10 interceptions and a 100.2 passer rating. Last season, however, he slipped to 18 touchdowns, 14 interceptions and an 84.9 passer rating in 13 games.

What do the Giants think of Vick? Defensive end Justin Tuck was coy when asked about him.

"I don't know. I saw some plays in that game where he still looked the same and he got out of the pocket and started running, but it's tough. I think he's had some injuries on the O-Line and he's getting some clean shots on him and obviously that's going to take a toll on any player, not only him," Tuck said. "I think he's still one of the most dangerous people on the football field."

There is no way of knowing right now how serious Reid is. Simply, this just adds another sub-plot to a critical Sunday night game.
