Alex Webster, 80, Dies

Former New York Giants star running back Alex Webster died Saturday morning at the age of 80. The news was first reported by TCPalm.com.

Webster played for the Giants from 1955 to 1964, gaining 7,317 yards from scrimmage during his career. He was named to the Pro Bowl twice. Webster coached the team from 1969-1973, compiling a record of 29-40-1.

In a fabulous book titled 'New York Giants: The Complete Illustrated History,' author Lew Freedman devoted a section of the work to Webster. Here is part of what Freedman wrote:

"Webster was never a speedster, but he made clutch plays. He was the cavalry who came to the rescue when New York needed it ... Webster will always be remembered by Giants' faithful as the man the team and quarterback Charlie Conerly turned to on handoffs when New York was in a third-and-two scenario."

I am sure many of the old-time Giants fans have first-hand recollections of Webster. Feel free to share your memories.
