The definitive list of who should stay and who should go.

Well done G-Men! Two Super Bowls in the last 4 seasons is truly amazing. But what would be even better is to repeat as champs. But we all know how hard that can be. Just ask the 2008-09 Giants, and the 2011-12 Packers. For the last couple of years, with parity becoming more and more prevalent, free agency, and 6 out of every 12 playoff teams not even making it to the playoffs the following year, trying to repeat as champs has become almost impossible.

The Giants have 24 free agents on the current roster. Here's the list, and my opinion on what to do with them:

Star-divide

Offense

David Carr - Great backup. No reason to let him walk, unless he receives an offer to start somewhere or he demands a lot of money, which I don't think will happen.

Michael Clayton - Wasn't really a factor this season on the field. Let him walk.

Domenik Hixon - If he's willing to take an incentive-laden contract, he can compete for the 3rd or 4th receiver spot. Definitely showed signs of ability when he was on the field.

Mario Manningham - "The Catch v2.0" will make him a rich man this offseason, and he will probably get it, but not from the Giants. I'd certainly keep him, but only at the right price. Will he stay for less is the question.

Devin Thomas - The 49ers game might have saved him. The Giants would be wise to try and keep some of the special teamers on this squad.

Jake Ballard & Bear Pascoe - Both are free agents, but exclusive rights, so if the Giants offer them three-year deals, then they have to stay. If not, they are free to walk. I don't see either of them getting three-year deals, especially with Ballard likely starting the season on the PUP list. The first two rounds of the draft will have plenty of TE's, so the Giants would be smart to look there.

Stacy Andrews and Tony Ugoh - The NFL is filled with OL guys like them. No need to keep them around if you can get replacements for cheaper.

Kareem McKenzie - At 33 years old, he is on the wrong side age-wise, and if you watched any games this season, you saw him get beat quite often. If the Giants are comfortable with moving David Diehl to RT and having Boothe and Beatty protecting Eli's blind side, let Kareem walk.

Defense

Dave Tollefson - Great role player within the D-Line rotation, had a breakout season with 5 sacks. Gotta bring him back.

Rocky Bernard & Jimmy Kennedy - With a healthy Marvin Austin back in 2012, we only need one of these guys. Keep Bernard at the right price, Kennedy was pretty much a non-factor this season.

Chase Blackburn & Jonathan Goff - Have to reward Blackburn for his amazing season considering the circumstances, but Goff is a better player. Get Goff to sign a similar contract to Hixon and make him compete with Blackburn and Greg Jones for the MLB spot.

Will Blackmon, Justin Tryon, Michael Coe, Bruce Johnson - All of these guys are in the same boat, and the most significant contributor of the group was Blackmon because he returned punts. But the return game was abysmal this season. All four guys can be replaced.

Aaron Ross & Terrell Thomas - Ross stepped in nicely this season for the injured Thomas. If Thomas will take a contract that will make him earn his spot back, you have to do it. Bring Ross back at a decent price too. The secondary came together nicely at the end, and a CB group of Webster, Ross, Thomas, and Amukamara is not too shabby.

Deon Grant - Grant played nicely this season after no other teams wanted him. He is the elder statesman of the defense, but he can be replaced.

Derrick Martin - He is a great locker room presence for the younger guys on special teams, and is a nice special teamer. Should be able to bring back inexpensively.

Steve Weatherford - A punter will never win a Super Bowl MVP, but his punts were instrumental in making the Patriots start deep in their own territory. His deal is already in the works according to sources. Smart move.

work is boring

so heres my thoughts

Offense

David Carr – if you can keep him for decent back-up QB money, keep him. If he wants top backup $, drop him. Ryan Perriloux seems to have the giants interest anyway. maybe start grooming him to backup Eli.

Michael Clayton – agree with you. didnt do a thing this year. minimum salery if anything

Domenik Hixon – if Mario walks and if this guy comes back 100%, we solved our 3rd WR problem. If hes healthy and capable.. keep him around

Mario Manningham – agree with you again. would love to keep him, but someone will pay him big bucks that the giants wont want to match.

Devin Thomas – his ST play earned him another contract. excels in the gunner position where the gents have been lacking for a long time.

Jake Ballard & Bear Pascoe – this one’s tough. would like to keep both because they are both servicable, but the torn ACL makes it tricky. Maybe keep Bear around, hes a very solid back-up. Ballard earned himself an extension, but we’ll have to see the progress his knee makes. No one will sign him anyway, so the Giants can probably take thier time with him

Stacy Andrews and Tony Ugoh – agree with you.

Kareem McKenzie – too pricey, too old, not good enough anymore. huge drop in production from 2010 to 2011. cant see 2012 being any better. let him walk.

Defense

Dave Tollefson – sign him. backup money of course.

Rocky Bernard & Jimmy Kennedy – Rocky is getting pretty old but he was still decent. Jimmy Kennedy is a juicehead. hopefully Austin can come back strong.I say let them both walk, or sign one as the 4th DT.

Chase Blackburn & Jonathan Goff – sign Goff to a 1 or 2 year “prove you still got it” contract. I would LOVE to have Chase stick around, but with the plethora of young LBs, i just dont think theyll have room for him, especially if he wants a decent payday.

Will Blackmon, Justin Tryon, Michael Coe, Bruce Johnson – Tryon, if 100% healthy, definetly deserves another shot. cant find heart like that just anywhere. bruce johnson was also respectable as a depth guy. blackmon and coe can hit the bricks. Have all 4 duke it out for 1 or 2 spots.

Aaron Ross & Terrell Thomas – would be wonderful to get both, but wont happen. Have to keep 1, preferrably TT. give him the same Goff deal… 1 or 2 year prove youre still good contract.

Deon Grant – let him walk. he was ok, but a liability. need to get some young depth at S

Derrick Martin – hm. not really sure. league minimum?

Steve Weatherford – give this man a new contract! the antidodge.

nice work , i would add

Chase Blackburn , Jonathan Goff ,Jones and Herz to batle it out .. hoping it works out to ..
1. Goff
2. Herzlich
3. Burn

I would like to see Boothe in the backup role.. Not sure moving DD will be the cure all to a good run game again, im hoping for …

Will B =Petrus=Baas=Snee=Double D

Strongly disagree with the Corner situation.. Tryon is would be the best pure slot corner on the roster and u gotta love how he gos all out on STs..

Web = TT = Tryon = Prince

I can see Ross getting a pretty good offer from a team like SF

No mention of Osi

I do genuinely hope the Giants make him a reasonable re-structure offer.

He is not a “starting” DE, but he is head and shoulders — and chest and waist — better than any DE in the NFL who will not typically be on the field half the game. Actually, if things go well, these 3 guys should split snaps almost evenly, with the young JPP shouldering a heavier load simply because of his youth and endurance (assumption on my part).

In both of our recent SB wins, the 3 pro-bowl level DE rotation has been a big part of our success. I would like to keep it. Osi should want to stay where he’s been collecting jewelry (isn’t it nice that a lot of these guys have TWO RINGS!?!?!) and realize it’s actually going to make him look a lot better than he really is by allowing him to do ONLY what he does best which is KILL THAT QB.

Give him a dime more so he can say he won. Extend him 3 years solid, option to 5. Frankly, all of these guys will have a longer, better career by splitting the load.

If Reese makes the call that Tolly is our new 3, so be it. But I’d love to keep our 4.

You PLAY to WIN the GAME.

If Osi gos (and i hope he don't unless we can get an early 2nd and a 5)

slide in Kiwi (being hes not on the field on 3rd down anyway ….. IMO Kiwi , Tolly ,JPP and Tuck still add up to the best DE combo in the league.. Philly being a close second.

I value Kiwi as a SAM

regardless of whether Osi stays or goes, I hope Kiwi stays at LB, perhaps as the blitz specialist they thought Sintim would be when they drafted him… p.s. Sintim doesn’t make it out of camp, you heard it here first.

You PLAY to WIN the GAME.

very happy with KIWI at the sam.

but (and if all else fails) i predict a more productive/stronger LB rotation, i can see him getting a little more action up front.

are Giants happy with Kiwi at SAM?

That’s the Q. They phased him out during the winning streak. I think they think Kiwi is better at Defensive End,

seen more during the SF game (for obvious reasons)

The rest were pass happy Os ,in which he played DE more often. His versatility is priceless ..

I think the Gmen are happy with him.

I don't think they were phasing him out

so much as the matchups required a lot of 2 LB sets. Kiwi was not calling plays, and we needed a pass coverage guy such as Boley or J-Will.

I think he’s a key element in our base 4-3 as a run stopper.

You PLAY to WIN the GAME.

if that happens I wouldn'tmind us using that nd on Hightower

I think he can step in when Kiwi slides to the line and attack downhill just as Kiwi would. He’s also got some potential as a pass rusher from a two or three point stance.

Osi

Huge mistake if they let Osi go ! I don’t care who they bring in… Do not mess with this chemistry ! The Giants started playing at another level once Osi got back & Tuck finally got healthy…

Chemistry is somewhat of a myth in the Salary cap era.

Changes are made every yr. The hope is the Vets keep the new blood in tune with the old..

Gotta Get Paid

They probably have to trade Osi (not let go, he has value) Because over the next two years they are going to have to pay

JPP, Hakeem Nicks, Victor Cruz, and Will Beatty

Those are all players at expensive positions and JPP and Nicks are going to be among the highest paid at their positions in the league, and Cruz too if he has another season like that.

Giants have to start getting rid of some big salaries, unfortuantely

We have more time on some

JPP is not a FA until 2015. Nicks 2014. Beatty and Cruz 2013, as well as Kiwi and KP then.

We are over the cap and have to shed contracts. Osi and Diehl have cut/trade friendly contracts (low signing bonuses). I think we have to let all major free agents in 2012 go.

My QB has 2 rings. Well, 3 if you want to get technical.

2012 NYG mock - 1: Dwayne Allen TE, 2: Brandon Boykin CB/RS, 3: A.J. Jenkins WR, 4: Vick Ballard RB, 5: Neiko Thorpe S, 6: Rishard Matthews WR/RS, 6: Blake DeChristopher G/T, 7: BPA

When you cut or trade players their remaining signing bonus counts against that year's cap

Osi has only 750k remaining on his signing bonus. Unlike Baas, who has over $5 million left.

ugh
I think we have to let all major free agents in 2012 go.

I hate hearing that from someone as well thought out as you.

Don’t we get injury discounts on Thomas and Goff? And possibly Hixon? Also what are the chances Reese repeats last year’s approach to Osi? (Play or don’t but you’re signed).

If we are forced to trade Osi b/c of cap constraints, I think he played well enough to have some considerable value in terms of compensation.

You PLAY to WIN the GAME.

I am running all of the cap numbers now for the next few years

Working on a huge fanpost. It is my belief that Thomas and Goff will be resigned for short, cheap deals, similar to Kiwi last year, except cheaper. Goff is not established enough to get a better offer and Thomas is on his 2nd ACL tear. No way Hixon is getting any money with his injury history either.

Osi may very well stay. But I think we need the cap room, and if we move him it only costs 750k against the cap. He has some trade value because his salary is only $3 million. A team like Tennessee, which will actually need to add contracts to make the cap floor, could be a landing place. I’d take whatever pick we can get. In my mind, Reese can do something with even a 4th or 5th rounder.

And thank you.

My QB has 2 rings. Well, 3 if you want to get technical.

what you'd take vs. what he's worth...

I’d be sorely disappointed if we only got a 4th or a 5th. But I know very little about draft pick value and other motives like cap space. Just watching the guy play, I think a team with the need for his specific services, figuring he’s got at least 5 years left, should cough up a 2 & 5 — if he’s “the missing piece” that puts them in the playoffs or better.

You PLAY to WIN the GAME.

Osi will STAY

Osi – give him an incentive-laiden, long term deal. 5 years minimum to allow for flexibility and continuity. With the big payday being located in a down year in regards to contract expirations.

Cruz- Young, healthy, durable and homegrown. This may be a stretch, but given his superhuman ball skills and awareness, I’d be totally confident in it.

1 year deal temporary deal.

Followed up by a midseason 9-year thunderbolt that will keep him with us for the rest of his career.

TT- Wants to stay, let him.

3 year, incentive laiden deal.

Manningham- Bring him back if he’s willing to accept a less guady paycheck but reward him with guaranteed money and substantial years (4+)

Jacobs – Played well down the stretch, despite the crappy play of the o-line. If he’s willing to trade the 4.4 million for a 3 more years to run wild in a positively progressing offense, make it happen. Leaders of his caliber are enormously difficult to find in any facet of life. And given the injury prone tendency of Bradshaw and the camaraderie they share, Jacobs would be the best option for us at RB.

Give tentative deals to Blackburn and Goff and draft a beast (one of Bama’s backers or Vontaze Burfict, who is an animal)

We have no cap room

Resign Weatherford, and Carr (see what happened to Indy), they will not be too expensive. Thomas and Goff get short-term contracts to see if they are healthy. Everyone else better take the veteran minimum or close to it, same as last year.

Now I don’t know how the numbers work out but keep him happy but let him know another year like this and we will sign you to a long term lucrative deal.
