Giants Sign Eight To Reserve/Futures Contracts

PrintThe stockpiling for the 2012 season has officially begun for the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants. The team today announced the signings of eight players to reserve/futures contracts.
The eight are: Defensive back Brandon Bing, running back Andre Brown, offensive lineman Selvish Capers, wide receiver Dan DePalma, defensive tackle Dwayne Hendricks (who played in one game this season), tight end Christian Hopkins, quarterback Ryan Perrilloux, wide receiver Isaiah Stanback and defensive end Adrian Tracy.
Each player spent part or all of the 2011 season on the Giants' practice squad. Perrilloux was cut and re-signed numerous times throughout the season. Tracy was a sixth-round draft choice by the Giants in 2010. Bing played collegiately at Rutgers. Brown was a fourth-round pick in 2009 who missed all of that season due to injury, was cut in 2010 and played for several teams, then returned to the Giants for the 2011 season.

Ross is about an average #2 cb

THomas is better in the slot where he can stop the run, blitz, etc. They’re different types of DBs I’d love to have both for at least another year.
Amukamara on the other hand tackles like a defensive end, or at least a DE that is down with JPP.

Presuming TT is healthy, he’s a better all around player than Ross, as evident by the fact that he was starting over Ross when both were healthy. You also have Prince in the mix, he’s your #1 pick, and most highly touted corner of the group, he’s got to play next year. With CWeb and TT, once again, provided he’s healthy, starting, Prince kind of by force, has to be at least the Nickel next season. Where does that leave Ross? As 4th corner? No way he’ll go for that, he made himself a decent contract this season, one the Giants won’t pay him to be their 4th corner. Not gonna happen, it’s a waste of money that can be spent somewhere else. Only way I see Ross coming back is if TT wants more money than he deserves coming off a season ending injury, and they say F that, and if Ross is willing to take a little less money to stay with the Giants than what he would get on the open market.

I don't believe Ross earned any real interest...
for being a serviceable player and nothing exceptional about his play this year. We carry 5 – 6 corners on the 53 man roster, so it’s not unconceivable to have Webby, TT, Prince, Ross, Witherspoon and Johnson.

He’s proven he’s a solid starting corner, when he’s allowed to play man coverage, if there’s a team that needs a starting corner, he’ll get his money, more than the Giants would presumably be willing to dish out.

No, I don't.
I also don’t see him wanting to move unless it’s to a team in TX, where he lives offseason with his wife. He’s got a better chance of sticking with us due to our insane level of loyalty. Not so if he goes somewhere else. He did nothing spectacular this year except for play ok. He won’t be getting a Gibril Wilson type of deal.

Not saying Gibril Wilson deal, only the Raiders are that dumb.
But think of a team like the Lions, they only have one decent corner, on an otherwise pretty good defense. It’s not far fetched to think he’d get somewhere like a 4 yr./ 20 mil deal from a team like them that needs a solid corner. Giants WILL NOT pay that to him for him to be the 4th corner, if TT is resigned/healthy. Especially when Johnson and Witherspoon both showed flashes of being more than serviceable 4th corners, both of whom are under contract, and infinitely cheaper. Say what you want about Ross, and you clearly don’t like him, you can’t even argue otherwise, he’s an average #2 corner, which a good 8-10 teams don’t have, and an above average #3, which even less teams have, and clearly, given the way the league has become so pass happy, need. You are under valuing him because of your bias. Any player that can come onto a team and be a starter, ANY PLAYER, will command a decent amount of money in FA. You forget the bidding war that is FA, and the lengths that some teams will go if they believe they are one player away from fielding a playoff caliber team. He didn’t have to be spectacular, that type of money is reserved for players that don’t often find their way to FA. Showing he’s a capable starter is about the best you can ask for from a FA signing. Don’t kid yourself, he made himself more money this season. If people are in unison here that Ham made himself a lot of money by simply showing up in the playoffs, and even more money with the Catch II, and he’s obviously my favorite Giant, then how did Ross not make himself more by being solid for 3/4 of the season? There’s fault in that logic, CB is a much more coveted position than WR, you see a lot of WRs come out of nowhere to be excellent ( Cruz, Welker), that’s not the case with most other positions, especially CB. There is much more of a demand for a starting caliber CB in FA than there is for a starting caliber WR in FA. So, if we all agree, and I don’t know what your take is, that HAM made himself some money, there is no rational way to say Ross did not do the same.

I used a lot of commas. Thoughts were coming to me as I was typing, so I just kept plugging away. I realize the Lions have cap difficulties, it was more of an example. Maybe a team like the Cowboys? Newman was exposed numerous times this year, he’s getting older, slower and breaking down, and Jenkins was inconsistent at best. You know Jerry would be more than willing to throw big bucks at a guy like Ross, not only because he’s a solid starter, but it would also stick it to the Giants. Sorry tryon really did not prove much to be a number 2 or 3 corner. Plus TT might never come back to what he use to be. Ross is a must sign at this point.

There is no nobody (other than ELIte) who is a “must sign”. They’ll offer him what they believe to be a reasonable contract, if he doesn’t want it, he’ll follow the money.

What depth at CB we have? We almost did not have enough this year to make it through. We were signing guys off the street. Sorry but injuried players do not always come back and some come back and really are not very good after the injury. So as of legit starting CB we can make him the offer he deserves.

Other than proving himself to be a hell of a competetor....
Tryon really didn’t play long enough, particularly after just arriving into a new defensive scheme before getting hurt to draw many conclusions in my view. But he came with decent credentials and a track record and Reese liked him enough to grab him when he became available, so I think he’s got a few things going for him. Add to that, that while he hurt himself physically, he did nothing to eliminate himself from consideration for a spot on the 2012 roster, and the fact that coming off of injury he probably won’t be extremely expensive, and I think he gets a long look with the Giants.
He did show grit by wanted to play very injured.

He came out of school at a size where he could really go either way; he’d be a big LB or a small DE. Then he got injured his first year, put on PS last year. They really like him, smart kid, hopefully he will make a leap this offseason and show something next year.

He was nasty in his rookie year, really jumped out in preseason. My guess is last year he wasn’t fully back from the knee surgery. Sometimes it takes 2 years to fully recover.

Look at the guys we’ve drafted recently: Petrus, Brewer…these guys are big road grader types, not finesse guys.
I think philosophically our organization wants to dominate the line of scrimmage and run the ball first, or at least in balance with the pass.

I think a lot of us keep forgetting Deihl won’t be at LT next year. Beatty is our starting LT, and was easily our best lineman for most of the season, before he got hurt. You know Bass isn’t going anywhere, they paid him to be the starter, Snee is a lock, Beatty is a lock. Mac is a goner, can’t see any outcome of events that has him playing for us next season, and I only see Deihl back if he’s willing to play for backup money, which I don’t think he is. Hopefully Brewer is ready, but imo, I think they will bring in a veteran RT via FA, a guy that can start if need be, but is an average starter and can be pushed by Brewer. LG is the spot I can’t figure out what they may do about. Deihl could be back to start at LG, do they give the job to Petrus if Deihl leaves, and most likely, they draft an interior lineman. IDK.

that’s why I didn’t even mention Boothe’s name. A guy like him is the perfect 6th lineman, can play all 3 interior positions, well enough to start for long stretches of a season. Really don’t know much about any interior lineman in the draft, gotta start doing my research.

The regular season picture is different.
Of the top 10 rushing teams, 5 made the playoffs: Denver, Houston, New Orleans, San Francisco, and Baltimore.
Of the bottom 10, 3 made it: Detroit, GB, and NYG.
Still, I’d like us to get back to being a Top-5 rushing team. It’s not an either/or proposition – hopefully we run and pass effectively.

I think the lineup will be (left to right):
Beatty-Petrus-Baas-Snee-Brewer
and I think they’ll be fine. I see Baas taking the Canty career path (ie: first injury of his career and hated, then a rock, and then potential probowler). Petrus is ready to start, and when he plays, we can run the rock. Beatty’s a lock, as is Snee.
The only question mark is Brewer, but I have faith in Flaharety. Beatty probably could’ve started his 2nd season, and he was more raw than Brewer coming out, and at a tougher position. So I’m willing to start Brewer and live with any growing pains. The rest of the line + Hynoski, Pascoe, and Eli should compensate.

don’t use the N word. Nobody cares who’s starting, who will be back, etc. Alshon Jeffrey and Michael Floyd are top 10, possibly top 5 caliber draft picks. Merely going by mock drafts, they’re possibly falling to the Giants. You simply don’t pass on that regardless of what you need.
If we’re drafting in the top 10, there’s gonna be players that fit our value and need. At 32 you got to go with the best available. Floyd and Jeffrey are way, WAAAY to good to pass on.

are Finley, though I doubt he reaches FA, Marcedes Lewis, who I personally think the Giants should push very hard for, Greg Olsen, and Bo Scaife. Giants usually don’t pursue a position like TE via Fa, so I agree, we probably end up drafting one 2nd or 3rd round.

Doubt
we pony up that kind of money for a position that, for whatever odd reason, we essentially don’t value.
I get that in our system we need our TEs to block, but we are taking a lot of options off the table by not having a receiving threat at TE. If we can get a guy who can do both, let’s do it. It will open up the entire offense.

I even think I said somewhere above that the Giants never ever target a position like TE in FA, so we most likely are going to draft a guy. Sure would love to have Lewis though, he’s a helluva receiving threat and a damn good blocker, no one gives him credit for it though.

It’s totally worth it though. An offense with Eli throwing to Nicks, Cruz, Ham, Lewis, Hynoski and AB/Jacobs? That’s not even fair. Although, Lewis didn’t really have all that great of a year, so maybe we can steal him for something like 4.5 mil/per. If that were feasible, they couldn’t possibly pass that up.

One thing they forgot to mention, and no one else seems to be touching on it either. Brady’s yds per attempt on the season was 8.6 yds/ pass attempt, second only to Rodgers. In the Super Bowl, Giants held him to 6.7 yds/ attempt. Almost 2 whole yards less. This is a huge deal, meaning the YAC just wasn’t there. Everytime a Patriots made a catch, a Giants defender was right in their face. Same thing Giants tried to contain in their first superbowl meeting and this was key.

or at least in the first 3 rounds. They will draft an OL and a RB, LBaneeker I don’t see the point unless someone like Kuechly or Zach Brown drops. But I wouldn’t get those hopes up. Saves you from complaining when we pass on one for a WR or DE.

Manningham made some big plays this postseason… but he had also slipped from starter to our #4 receiver (he was behind Hixon) because he screws up on his route running too much. It would be nice to keep him but he’s not worth getting into a bidding war over.
He wasn't #4, or behind Hixon.
Hixon got hurt week 2. Up to that point, HAM was the 2nd Wr, Hixon was third, and Cruz was barely seeing the field. Week 3, Cruz replaced Hixon, killed Asomugha, and never looked back, and kind of just passed HAM. He was never #4, and was only #3 once Cruz started beasting.

Its too bad about this guy. He did a good job as a starter before his first knee injury. I thought he was showing some borderline star potential. And then to blow out his knees a second time on a great circus catch… probably too much to overcome at this point. Sad.

such a great weekend. such a great parade. I had the best like 5 days in a row….got to see everyone up close and personal on broadway and park near city hall. telemundo and cbs2 were showcasing our whole group. This was a magical season to remember. But ill still take another week to ride this.

He bought the team and the coaches all bottles of Johnny Walker Blue with their names and Super Bowl 42 engraved on them. It was like $17,000 in booze. Obviously, you are entitled to your opinion but I disagree. I felt that Boothe pulled the Patriots defensive lineman to the ground when he grabbed the back of his shirt after holding him while the play was underway. As the hold, was at the point of attack as the runner went past and the Patriots DL ended up on the ground, I felt it was an easy call.

I disagree a little about the holding call. True, the DL "went" to the ground, but he was not taken to the ground. And even he knew it was a ticky tack call as evidenced by the wink he gave to Boothe after the call was made. It would have been a better non-call.

Sorry but I disagree on all counts. As for the "wink," I think you are seeing things. The league office had absolutely no problem with any of the calls (and non-calls) in the game. You appear to spend much of your time trying to find situations where the officials "missed" the call. Your opinion is not shared by those who were responsible for assessing the performance of the officials in this game.

he had like 5 good seasons, but he got a late start because he was CFL for a lot of his good years. IMO he’s one of those borderline HOF guys… had the peak, but not the longevity, but if you account for the CFL career, hard not to vote for him, but that’s just my thought.

Lets Talk Draft real quick...
We’re going to be losing players no matter what; I’m just glad it looks like we’re on top of Weatherford and Thomas… however I want to spend the 1st round pick on either a ILB or TE… my top 2 would be Vontaze Burfict or Coby Fleener if they are available; Burfict will give our Linebacking core that edge that we haven’t had in awhile idc how big his mouth is he’ll mature and he won’t cross JPP or Tuck and if he does Antrel Rolle will out big mouth him, as for Fleener dude’s a monster 6’6" 4.5 speed and a ridiculous vertical and catching ability so either way I won’t complain with picking one of these two if they’re available for the 32nd pick; as for the other draft choices Donte Hightower; Dwayne Allen; Engrew from Mizzou; and Lamar Miller would be awesome choices on the second day but may go higher… but anyone have any thoughts about these players or maybe an O-lineman I haven’t brought up that’s worth the 32nd pick (And obviously the draft is unpredictable and anything can happen aka Minnesota Viking it but I love Reese’s picks so far and just wana hear where Big Blue Nation stands so we can Repeat next year)

He has ZERO discipline on the field. He freelances, has low football IQ, cannot play without getting penalized, takes horrible angles…
Yeah, he’s got a great highlight reel, but watch some actual game tape. He was on the field for about 3 minutes in ASU’s bowl game. He started on the bench, got on the field, drew a 15yrd penalty, and got benched again.
I don’t care HOW hard you hit, it doesn’t do a damn bit of good if you’re handing the opposing offense 50 yards in penalties and get suspended.
As far as linebackers, the Giants should be looking at Luke Kuechly (best all around LBzezer in the drat), Travis Lewis (great all around ’backer), and Audie Cole (a bit raw but a fantastic frame, explosive hitter, and a very fluid athlete).
I mean right now Baltimore is calling him the Ray Lewis Replacement
but if he’s available he can hit like no other linebacker in this draft class
I would personally like to thank Jason Garrett for "icing" his kicker in Arizona...
