Thought Pats fans were bitter?
We've all been there: It sucks to see another team win the Super Bowl when you feel like yours had the best season, and was the most capable. I, for one, was bitter about Super Bowl 43 after the Giants' great regular season. But...this Niners Nation post is a little absurd. Say what you will about some of BBV's editors' opinions, but at least they're all classy enough to never write something like
"[The Niners were] trumped by the team who was mostly absent. It's like when the slacker in school gets better grades than you, and you studied your tail off. This was a weird season for a lot of reasons, so I'm just going to chalk this Super Bowl up to that. Let's see how things differ next year with a full offseason in place."
I mean, seriously? How can you purport to be a sports journalist, or even an editorialist, if you act so entitled? Especially when that 13-3 record came out of the woeful NFC West.
Hats off to the Niners for putting together a great season, and for being a fun team to watch in those close games. But it's the Giants that won five straight elimination games and then won it all. Good luck to Bay Area fans in 2012.

It wasn't a condemnation of talent. We all think the Giants are good. Hell, I've picked 'em for the Super Bowl for the last couple years.
Hasn’t necessarily worked out for me lol .. but ya know.

Not all of you think the Giants are good
The guy who wrote that is pretty clear in his disdain. He’s very convenient in his analysis, it focuses almost exclusively on his points and ignores tons of contradicting evidence, like history and the very nature of a single elimination championship tournament.
I think it’s a credit to Niners Nation that the comments include a fair amount of rebuttal to the sour grapes tone of the writers piece.
Eli is our King!
Thanks for pointing out the rebuttal
I’m not surprised you did that.

Some think you're quite good
Seattle and AZ looked a year away. Better than advertised. I think any right minded fan who watched the NFC title game would say the Giants and Niners were pretty evenly matched.
Eli is our King!
Absent
I’d agree the Giants weren’t absent during that elimination run. It’s an exaggerated comment to make a point. It’s purely opinion. This isn’t an issue of class or not.
It's a weird season and I'll chalk up the SB to that.
Not too much else would discredit the SB champion more. Except maybe to say they cheated or the league was fixed.

Dylan doesn't speak for all of us. While I subscribe to the line of thought that we beat ourselves to a good degree, it obviously required two teams for it to happen.
I didn’t catch a post here about, say, our editor telling another one of our readers that he was wrong in saying the 49ers beat the Giants 8 out of 10 times? Where’s that post at? I think he said it was closer to 50/50. Is that something you guys wouldn’t agree with? This isn’t about class. The cross-blogging between NN and BBV was far too good to taint it with this now.

This one post would not change my opinion of that or affect how I will cross-blog, as you put it, in the future.
Just wanted to put that out there.

He does speak for Niners Nation
if that wasn’t a fanpost. I mean, really:
I still don’t believe the Giants are the better team. They certainly don’t come to mind when discussing the league’s best teams. And on top of that, the Patriots just looked shorthanded out there against a team I already didn’t feel deserved to be there. They put on a piss poor performance during the 2011-12 regular season, finishing with a 9-7 record, barely topping .500. They got beat by teams like the Eagles, the Seahawks and the Redskins twice. Not to mention, they got beat by the three powerhouses representing the NFC this year in The Packers, Saints and 49ers. So, do I feel the best team won? No. Do I feel the NFC is well represented? Eh..not since I believe they are the third or fourth best team in the NFC.
This is something you should be embarrassed to publish. It’s sour grapes, it’s crybaby, and it’s the opposite of good sportsmanship.

That line speaks bitterness. It is one thing just to say a poor performance, but when you start adding in “extra” adjectives its different.

"Giants rely on fumbles and stripping the ball. If the pats secure the ball, then the pats win, but if they fumble or let the ball get striped than the giants win. every game the giants play they always benefit from the other teams bonehead mistakes (fumbled or striped) not from thier skills. The giants are a dirty team, I can’t think of any othe team as dirty as the giants. I did not intend to make it sound as though this post was a slight against all Niners fans. You seem like a classy guy and as a matter of fact, the Niners were the first team I remember cheering for — the ’94 Super Bowl is the first I can remember watching (Indiana Jones halftime show and all).
The linked post got under my skin, however, because it wasn’t a Fan Post. It was listed as a normal article on your site — so that does reflect on the NN site as a whole.

Sorry, James, who did I insult?
If you are the editor — and I am a former professional editor — you know that what you choose to publish on your front page is implicitly endorsed by your publication. It’s like the editorial page of a newspaper — it’s an institutional voice.
You have a responsibility — again, if you are an editor — to select content that reflects well on you and the site. This article clearly does not.
I apologize if you take offense at my reaction, but it is my professional opinion — you should be embarrassed to have published those sentiments. I don’t see how you can take that as insulting “the rest of your site” and certainly not the fans. I am saying nothign about your fine fans, and I’m sure you have a great site.
You PLAY to WIN the GAME.

I am not the editor.
We’re a blog. I’m not embarrassed to have multiple opinions on the front page. I’d be embarrassed if I got so hurt over what one person said. The only reason I’m here right now is because I like BBV so much, have been rooting for the Giants for years and, frankly, want to clear up misconceptions. You’re a good guy and you guys have an excellent site here, but you’re making an awful lot about nothing – especially all this professionalism. This “and I’m sure you have a great site,” is a subtle dig that yes, I obviously have noticed. We do – and so do you good folks here. The difference is that I’m not going to pretend it’s not good because one person said something I disagree with. It happens a lot.
Congrats on the Super Bowl victory – legitimately and honestly.

I’m the one who keeps track of what is posted. I disagree with plenty of opinions on the site, but I also am open to what people want to discuss and what people want to say as it relates to the 49ers. It’s been a tough two weeks for 49ers fans and I am fine with people wanting to unload a bit. It’s the nature of being a fan.

hi, Dave,
Do you think that there is any implicit endorsement in front page posts?
I’m not saying that each post should reflect only your opinion. I appreciate the value of diverse opinions. I just think that publishing an opinion calling the Super Bowl champions “piss poor” is a poor editorial decision on your part.
At the very least, again just my opinion, the language could have been cleaned up to be not so insulting.
At best, you could have told the writer — “Hey, I don’t want the site coming off as whiny and sour grapes — re-write this in a more intelligent and less inflammatory way.”
On the other hand, if you feel the site has no responsibility or accountability for the opinions it publishes, then we have a fundamental difference of opinion when it comes to journalism, and probably won’t be able to agree.
You PLAY to WIN the GAME.

site opinion
There is an accountability to some degree, but his opinion reflects that of probably a majority of 49ers fans at this point. The site is built around a community of 49ers fans. Other fans are more than welcome to join in, but a lot of 49ers fans do have sour grapes and his opinion reflects that. I personally don’t have sour grapes at this point, but my opinion probably does not reflect the majority of 49ers fans.

I just find it entertaining. . .
that so many fans cite some unarticulated criteria of their own to judge who is or is not a better team.
If the criteria are not measured by on the field performance and results, what are they but speculative fantasies?
In the NFL team results re not measured by stats but by wisns and losses. And because schedules are not all equal, there’s a tournament at the end to decide who is the best.
It’s not complicated.
And that’s why all this other stuff is entertaining, because it’s so silly, churlish and immune to reason.
Just once I’d like to see one of these people say what their criteria for judging which team is best are. Besides what teams or players they like, I mean.
Now everyone will say Eli is in Bradys class. F*ck me
by PatNation85 on Nov 6, 2011 4:31 PM PST
I'm not sure they can give you any specific criteria
that trumps wins and loses. But I’m sure, A J, you are very familiar with the criteria that is so often used to discredit our wins. Luck.
You know, the Giants are the luckiest team eva and get lucky, game, after game, after game with a dizzying multitude of good fortune be in with the bounce of the ball, the other team dropping passes, a missed or a bad call, injury, etc. etc.

Why does this matter?
As fans of the New York Football Giants, we are used to getting disrespected or people having a less than favorable opinion of us. I wouldn’t have it any other way, so I think we should just close our mouths regarding it and just let them think what they want.
I’ve noticed a disturbing trend of many of the fans on this site where we continually and actively look at other SB nation blogs looking for slights and insults. Why? I do think its fun to read when they say something that is an insult, but for the most part, I believe it to be envy. They WANT to be where we are right now as fans. We know that so they have to say these things to feel better as fans of their own team. Just let them do it, smile inside and carry on.

Not going to lose sleep over this
When you beat the number one team in the league (the Green Bay Packers) by a resounding three scores, then go on to beat the 49ers at home, and then, after all of this, go and take out the New England Patriots (the team that won 10 straight since the last time since you beat them), the opinion of some schmuck who must not watch a lot of football doesn’t matter.
I thought 49ers fans, on the whole, were among the better fan bases as far as discussion goes. Not going to fault them for one guy posting garbage (unless they are being supportive of it, I didn’t actually check it out).
I think an argument could be made that the 49ers, behind the Giants, had the best team in the league. Defense wins championships, and the 49ers had a Super Bowl winning defense. The problem was that they played a complete Giants team (a healthy one too) with one hell of a quarterback. If the Giants didn’t make the playoffs this season, the only reason I could see the 49ers losing is that they’d have to go on the road and beat the Packers at Lambeau.
But, I am a firm believer that the Super Bowl winner is in fact, the best team. It’s not as if the Giants had some cakewalk to get there. They knocked off the NFC’s one seed, then two seed, before beating the top-seeded Patriots (who, by the way, have one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever take a snap in the game).
Further, San Francisco didn’t have the guns to matchup to New England. They have a great defense, yes, but the reason the Giants won goes beyond great defensive play. The Giants’ offense, even when they weren’t scoring points, were moving the ball and manhandling the clock, which is the one surefire way you can keep Brady from scoring.
The Pats didn’t run their second offensive play until more than 11 minutes elapsed in the first quarter. I just don’t see San Francisco’s offense being able to do the same kinds of things to slow down New England the way the Giants had.
That said, San Francisco is going to be a solid team for years to come. But the Giants will crank out 12-14 wins next season, so we’ll see you guys in the playoffs and we can settle it then. Again.
by Max Schwager on Feb 7, 2012 1:50 PM EST reply actions 2 recs
I think they would have bulldozed New England up and down the field...
I think those linebackers would have crushed Welker & Hernandez… battered brady like a Tiki bar in a hurricane.
I think the 49ers were at least as physically imposing as us, if not more, and certainly could have put one more win up had they beaten us.
You PLAY to WIN the GAME.
Dear Tebow, please let the Giants beat the Patriots.
by Simms-McConkey on Feb 7, 2012 1:56 PM EST up reply actions
I disagree
Yes, they are at least as physically imposing as us defensively (if not more).
I don’t see their offense, however, being able to do what the Giants were able to do offensively, which is essentially play defense on offense. The 49ers didn’t have the receivers to exploit the New England secondary the way the Giants had. New England’s kryptonite all year has been 3 wide, which is something San Francisco doesn’t really have the personnel for.
My argument is that it takes a complete team to beat New England, because no matter how good you are defensively, if your offense can’t sustain drives, the Pats will score. It’s a matter of time. If you keep giving that offense chances, they will score. I don’t think they’d score a lot, but enough to win a close game over the 49ers.
Sort of like how the Philly game played out for us earlier this season (the loss). Our offense kept stalling, and no matter how good your D is playing, if the other team gets enough chances they are likely going to punch it in at one point or another.
But we will never know. I use Baltimore for reference. Not the same team, but similar, and the Pats did go toe to toe with them despite Brady playing like shit.
I think SF
would have been able to run all over NE! Look what we were doing to them! I think they would have been able to push NE all over the field and SF’s front 7 would have crushed Brady.+
i dont . Pats have a real good run D.
Pats played 7 in the box all game . that prob wouldn’t have been the game plan vs SF.
I may not be the most noble of men but in a town of lepers, im the one with the most fingers.

I don't see the big deal...
To the first comment, the reason the slacker gets better grades then you even though you studied your ass of is usually because the slacker is smarter/better/more talented than you.
To the second comment (that Simms posted) he’s right! IF we hadn’t made the playoff most of us would have considered this a piss-poor regular season! We lost 4 games to teams we were vastly superior to. We went on a four game losing streak and had a negative point differential. BUUUUUT all this is what makes the NFL so amazing! ANY GIVEN SUNDAY! We got hot at the right time and stayed that way! I think the playoffs was more of indication of what this team really is and the proves that the regular season was piss-poor, we didn’t play to our abilities!
I dont get it
The Giants are the Best “complete” team and hence won the superbowl (this year). We went up against some of the most prolific offenses (GB, NE) and matched them point for point, down for down. We went up against the most bad-ass d (49ers) and traded punts with the best of them. Spl teams were solid, if not unspectacular (unlike our o or d). We got a few good bounces – we got a few bad calls. We didnt have the luxury of playing in our home turf for much of the competition. While many of our players were “healthy?”, we played an entire season with regulars injured, regiulars on IR at the start of the season and every sunday – next man up (turnstile) philosophy. And we played the meanest schedule in the league. So, we won some, lost some in the regular season. And showed up to play – where it counted – in the single elimination phase. And brought it all home. Where’s the luck? Where’s the slacker in school?
Haters are grasping at straws...
We finished 9-7, we lost 4 in a row at one point, we barely made the playoffs, that’s all they got. Everyone on this board feels much better about a 9-7 Super Bowl champ than a 10-6 non playoff team.

Look, we’ve had plenty of seasons where we did great in the regular season, and crashed and burned in the post season, when expectations were high (see also: ‘Plaxico Burris/leg shooting/downward-spiral-event’ season), it’s part of being a fan.

You PLAY to WIN the GAME.
Dear Tebow, please let the Giants beat the Patriots.
I've seen the same thing on the Eagles and Pats boards.
It’s the classic 5 Steps of Loss and Grief:
1. Denial. They handled that immediately with their “WTF” blog posts.
2. Anger. Also pretty instantaneous, with their petty rants against the refs, the “lucky Giants” and believe it or not their own star players.
3. Bargaining. This is where they are now, the “what if” stage. The funniest thing is that they all talk about the regular season games like those are the important ones and not the playoffs. If they don’t like the idea of a 9-7 team winning it all then they should lobby for a 4 team playoff format (then they’d cry most years about being shut out of the “Dance”).
4. Depression. Well they’re already deeply mired in that and know that that sucks … so man up guys and go straight to …
5. Acceptance. The off season will go much better for you that way.

The winner of the superbowl is the best team PERIOD! I wish it had turned out differently, but it didn’t and I’m not going to waste my time crying over it. The Giants deserve congratulations for a hell of a playoff run and subsequent superbowl victory. I think some people are too caught up on your regular season record of 9-7, but once you get your ticket punched for the playoffs, regular season means nothing and you guys got healthy and started playing well at the right time.
