Today the Steelers cut Hines Ward. I believe they were the team with the most salary cap problems. Big Ben also retooled his contract to give them money to get under the cap. Cutting Ward saves the Steelers some money, and will help them to keep their young WRs. Ward has said that he wanted to stay with the Steelers and was willing to take a pay cut to make that happen. I guess the Steelers were not interested in keeping him even at a cheaper rate. Maybe cutting Ward will lead to resigning him at that cheaper rate in the long run.
Of course this is not a Steelers blog, it is a New York Giants blog. The Giants are going to lose Mario Manningham. He will be able to make more money, and get more playing time with some other team. It looks like Manningham will be one of the top free agent WRs available, and the Giants do not have enough salary cap space to keep him.
Even without Manningham the Giants have a good WR group. The top 2 WRs in Nicks and Cruz are both great. After those 2 guys the WRs are very untested. Barden has looked good at times, but the Giants have not had him on the field or even the active roster for important games. JJ has interesting skills, but has played little. Cruz is young and only has 1 season (admittedly great) in the NFL. Even Nicks is a young guy though he is the most experienced WR on the team.
This brings me to Ward. He is at the end of his career. He might not have much left in the tank at this time. However, if he wants to play and is reasonable in his salary expectations he could be good for the Giants. They could use a solid 3rd or 4th WR that can be counted on to run good shorter routes and make catches. He also seems to be the kind of guy that would be willing to help teach younger players rather then being concerned about his stats. Having a high character guy that can help make the younger WRs better could be a great thing for the Giants, if he doesn't cost to much of course.
What do you all think?
