well, it kinda is

I mean, Ballard’s a 4.8 guy, Gronk’s a 4.6… that’s a major difference.

by TNYFBG on Feb 25, 2012 1:41 PM EST up reply actions

For me it's not so much the time taken on its own.

Gronk ran a 4.6 at 6’6"-250. It’s hard for tall guys to run fast.

Ballard ran a 4.8 at 6’6"-250/260ish

Allen is only 6’3", which is why I kind of wish he ran faster.

Think about it this way. Green is as tall and heavier than Ramses Barden, but Barden ran almost a full second slower.

None of this means that Green will be better than Allen. It’s all just part of the picture.

by GiantNomad on Feb 25, 2012 1:52 PM EST up reply actions

it's not the end-all-be-all for sure

but like you said, he’s short to begin with, so he’s short and slow… not exactly what I’m looking for in a 1st round TE. That being said, he could be a HOFer, who knows?

by TNYFBG on Feb 25, 2012 2:07 PM EST up reply actions

I don't want a track star that can come out of the blocks

I want a TE that can block, get open and catch.

screw the combine. All I hope is that it other teams put way too much stock in this kinda stuff.

Try 4.89

Now that looks pretty bad. He does look a lot faster than that when he ran his routes but it still looks bad. He is also only 6’3 I usually like bigger TE’s

JR specifically said in todays conference

That he looks for “good players” and that isn’t position specific. He said they would “address” the TE issue in draft or FA.

Considering how in the past three or four years we addressed need in FA as well as how bad the top TEs look, I’m going to go ahead and bet on us grabbing one in FA. Don’t be surprised if we go DL in the first.

Fleener may be on the Giants radar

I know he’s leaner, but he’s tall and can put more weight on if he has to. If we took him I’d give him a few weeks with Pat to work on his blocking, because the receiving skills are already there.

by #56 4life on Feb 25, 2012 2:18 PM EST up reply actions

we've already tried that type of project

Lady Beckum I believe was the last TE that couldn’t block that Pope had to work with.

Give Pope someone who is built like Bavaro, and we’ll get a quality product out of it.

by Flynner on Feb 25, 2012 2:23 PM EST up reply actions

But Fleener is 3 inches taller and about 10-15 pounds heavier

I think he has a much better chance of fitting into the Giants offensive system. He’s been described as a “raw” blocker, which means he has the ability, just needs the coaching.

by #56 4life on Feb 25, 2012 2:31 PM EST up reply actions

I love that you used my appointed name

for Lady Beckum.

Sister Mary Beckum is a good alternative.

We want a Bavaro, not a sister.

All the Giants should play like Mark Bavaro.

TC, PF, KG, will stay but should go for the long term good.

Nice Choice

C.Fleener could be our pick at 64. I like getting P.Konz/OC Wisconsin to be our starting center first. Then gettign C.Fleener/TE Stabford with our second pick and K.Zeitler/OG Wisconsin with our third pick.
Not to bad, three young, talented starters with our first three picks.

by Dziedzic on Feb 25, 2012 3:53 PM EST up reply actions

I would love that

Zeitler and Konz were dominating at Wisconsin and I really like Fleener. I think we get a OT and an inside guy in this draft

by michaelkhan3 on Feb 25, 2012 7:29 PM EST up reply actions

Not Likely?

The problem is there is an opportunity to retool the Offensive line this year.
Your right not since 2004 it has happen. Well, the need is now and for the big picture. Let’s say we A.Datko in the fourth round.
Konz/Zeitler/Fleener/Datko is sure better then Booth/Snee/Baas.
In case you did not notice we had to live on E.Manning passing the ball.
So why not bring in talent to protect him better and open it up A.Bradshaw to have more breakaway runs.
Add D.Diehl ito the mix as a OG next year.

But Canty is also going to be sharing time with Linval and maybe Austin, who once he gets back into football, could be a force. If we add another top guy into our DT rotation, as well as Tuck spending time at DT, Canty wouldn’t be around long

You’re right, everyone else is a 3tech though. Especially Austin, who from what I heard could even play a 5tech. But Austin is rather unproven, which is why I’d be on board with another DL, because Austin hasn’t played football in 2 years now. That’s a real long time, no matter how good a guy was before hand.

One of our keys to success is a dominant DL, which is why we can get away with average LB’s. A few guys over at MTD are big fans of Chandler Jones. I like em too, plus he wouldn’t be a 1st rounder. Could be a monster in our rotation. But imagine how mad people would be if we got a guy like Cox/Thompson in the 1st, and then Jones in the 2nd/3rd round

the #-tech terminology deals with where DL line up in relation to the OL

0-tech = directly over center
1-tech = off center/guard
2-tech = over guard
3-tech = off guard / tackle
4-tech = over tackle
5-tech = outside tackle

I don't think Combine catches are worth that much though

Guys like Allen and Fleener were catching the ball in season. Fleener was a huge help to Luck in Stanford. I think I’d stamp a late 1st round grade on Fleener and Allen, and that’s exactly when the Giants are picking.

by #56 4life on Feb 25, 2012 2:38 PM EST up reply actions

Fleener had Luck throwing to him in college, and defenses couldn't stop it.

This is the NFL. I don’t think Fleener should be overrated. But we can argue it all day. JR will do the right thing.

by BigBlue9091 on Feb 25, 2012 2:41 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah he will

But you say he had Luck throwing to him in college….well he would have Eli throwing to him in NY. And with all the other weapons we have, Fleener wouldn’t be high on any defenses radar. Eli made Ballard look damn good, and Fleener is much better than Ballard imo. It’s time for Eli to get a good weapon at the TE position, not just a guy who is average/ slightly above average.

Being a bit hard on KP

For more than half the year he was playing way too far off the ball. Couldn’t make any plays from where he was. Also without KP, we would have surrendered way more TD’s than we did. KP did a good job making up for breaks in coverage and keeping guys from breaking away and scoring TD’s.

I'm going to say that your eyes on a safety playing deep coverage are hard to trust

These days the QB sets someone in motion or has a set that will diagnose where KP is going to be on the play. If he’s going to present a problem, the QB just won’t throw that way, if he’s vulnerable, they’ll often use a 2nd WR to attack his area to freeze him so that he can’t aggressively close.

On TV or even in the stadium he can look avg to nothing special, but still doing exactly what’s asked and as well as anyone that isn’t significantly faster. Most of the guys faster than KP are playing CB

I dunno if you can fault him for a detached retina.

Giants held him to limited reps cause they thought he wasn’t ready. They started him in his 3rd year cause they thought he was finally ready as opposed to limited snaps in 2010. He proved them right by having a great year before going on IR.

He’s about as proven as Victor Cruz is.

Cruz didn't start until this year either.

Beatty only gave up 3 sacks (2.5 officially) in 10 games. By comparison, Joe Thomas also gave up 3 sacks in a full season and he was the best LT in the entire league. Jason Peters also gave up 3 sacks in 16 games. So Beatty was on track to being a top 10 LT.

Cruz didn't start playing until Philly. He played in 14 games only.

Compare Beatty who gave up 3 sacks in 10 games to David Diehl who gave up 9 sacks in 8.

Nobody was talking about Beatty because the rest of our OL sucked balls, but he quietly had a very good year.

What Beatty did was expected. That’s the difference. Both played well, Cruz definitely did better, but both played well.

However, your argument was that Beatty was unproven because of a small sample size. I was just asserting that Cruz has just as small a sample size. That’s all

Two SB wins in five seasons. I'll take it. BUT, we have a chance at another very good year, and I truly believe that beating the eggs is the key to winning this division. Romo will choke as he always does, and we own them. Unfortunately, the eggs

have owned us the last four years. One for eight. Not good. We will need to take the first game from them as we did last year. I don’t like that they starting playing good ball at the end of the year. We better be hungry and ready. Fear? No. Respect? Yes. We better play hard.

my brain is too small to get concepts that big. You seemed to miss my point responding to you statement " I don’t like that they starting playing good ball at the end of the year" . They finished nice (against bad teams) after being terrible to start the year. What does that have to do with worrying about them next year?

Also who cares if they win two in a row again in 2012. There are 14 other games to worry, I’m not focused on those two. If they Giants went 12-4 but two of the L’s were against the eagles, would you really care that much?

That's funny. "Against bad teams". Check some of our losses. For that matter, check some of our wins.

We got hot and played well right when we needed to. We could all feel it coming with that loss to GB in the reg. My point is simple. I know you don’t get it. That’s okay. They are our chief competition in the NFC East. There. That’s pretty easy to understand.

Just because I don't agree with your point

does not mean I don’t understand it so please don’t insult my intelligence.

Of course the goal is to win every game, especially against division rivals. But it is not make or break if you lose half of your NFC East games. Eagles, Cowboys and Redskins are all the Giants chief competition in the East, if you try to overlook any of them, you will lose the game (both Skin games this year). And the the other degree, you can’t but all your focus into trying to beat one team during the regular season.

And yeah, Giants beat some crappy teams and lost to some as well. But the same people who say “Giants got lucky, only beat bad teams, lose to all the good teams” are the same ones who say “Eagles were really dangerous at the end of the year, hate to play them”… can’t have it both ways.

I would love the Giants to win every game every week, especially against the East teams. But a season’s success does not rely on sweeping your division.

I just, well, it’s astounding, frankly. I’m bereft of words at the depth of thought here. It was so worthwhile to post that response. Thanks for taking the time.

Yepp, the Eagles > the Boys for sure

The eagles have the potential to be a very dangerous, complete team. Until Dallas fixes their defense, they will never be a contender. After Ware and Lee, who do they really have on D? Ratliff is washed up, their secondary is hot garbage. The Eagles on the other hand, if Vick is healthy, can beat any team in the league.

Go Giants!

Eagles can be a dangerous team but we should at least split with them in 2012

and as for the Cowboys, besides what you mentioned about their defense they also lack an overall team intensity that Giants have an abundance of.

No doubt. My fear is the cap will hinder necessary FA acquisitions on the Oline or at TE. It's going to be a long year

if we can’t upgrade the OL. Because unless one of the OL’s falls, I think we’re gonna end up with a BPA at DT.

by BigBlue9091 on Feb 25, 2012 2:57 PM EST up reply actions

Have they not set the cap amount?

Reese made it seem like they have no idea how much room they will have. If that’s the case then when do they set the cap and how do they determine it?

Big worry about the OL right now should be Brewer

If Brewer can come in and do a solid job at RT, we’ll be alright. Guard isn’t something we should worry about. Snee is a fixture, even after a bad year, and I think Petrus can step up and be our LG

Underrated OT

Tom Compton is doing well. He should be available in 2nd or 3rd round unless he keeps doing well and his stock rises.

My Wife is a Patriot's fan...
"Giants rely on fumbles and stripping the ball. If the pats secure the ball, then the pats win, but if they fumble or let the ball get striped than the giants win. every game the giants play they always benefit from the other teams bonehead mistakes (fumbled or striped) not from thier skills. Aside from QB it doesn't matter what position BPA plays

even if that position if not a need.
If it’s DT, you can free over $3 mm in cap room by cutting Canty.
If it’s DE, you trade Osi and save over $3mm
if it’s CB you save by not re-signing TT
and the rest are all positions of need anyways.

Outside of that I’m reading Giants101, and they point out Reese likes going BPA at skill positions, cause you can never have enough of those guys. The skill positions (LT, WR, DE, CB) are what helps you win. I’m not blind enough to see that you also need to win in the trenches, but at #32, it probably better to go BPA in skill positions instead of reaching for a lower ranked OL guy.

I’ve been a fan if drafting Cordy Glenn if the Giants get the chance.

im really shocked with allen

this guy seriously underwhelmed. the worst 10-yard split? A very average 32 inch vertical leap?

I thought his explosiveness and jump ball ability was supposedly his greatest strengths…. hes lucky fleener wasnt there to completely overmatch his numbers

by Nfpdawg on Feb 25, 2012 4:47 PM EST reply actions

None of these guys is a first round pick. We will be able to get one in the second/third, maybe later.

But really, the only thing that matters is keeping Eli upright to find his guy. That’s the bottom line. He carried our team. Protect him, and we have a good season. JR is going to find a way to protect Eli, whether it’s draft of FA. Everything else flows from there.

by BigBlue9091 on Feb 25, 2012 4:54 PM EST up reply actions

Charles is only 3 lbs lighter, and Fleener is only 8 lbs lighter.

Both are more vertical threats than Allen, but Allen is the more polished blocker.

by BigBlueIntervention on Feb 25, 2012 4:58 PM EST up reply actions

None of them is worth a first round pick. Unless Fleener can become a Plax type throw it up and just go get it guy.

If that’s the case, then I’m all in and we can take an OL that falls to the second or look in FA. I’m all for giving Eli, the entire key to our team, every weapon he can use. But keeping him upright and the pocket clean is the key.

by BigBlue9091 on Feb 25, 2012 5:01 PM EST up reply actions

Based on what JR looks for, if there ever was going to be a 1st round TE taken by us now, it'd be Fleener

though the game tape for both is excellent. I still like Allen and I think he’s still the bomb. However, I can’t deny that this hurt his stock.

by Raptor22 on Feb 25, 2012 10:17 PM EST up reply actions

1st or 2nd year, I don't see him doing much of any blocking

unless he goes in motion and crack-back blocks. But I could see a big TE like Hopkins on one side and Egnew on the other. And in a few years, after he puts on more wait…we’ll see. The thing about making the SB is I see it as you lose your 1st round pick but you gain an “8th round” pick. We pick so late, it’s like picking at the top of the 2nd.

We need to draft players for the Giants, not a triathalon

Green is skinnier than Nicks, he’s not blocking anybody. He might as well have run with the WRs. Egnew at least has the frame to become a blocker.

Allen did exactly what I expected today. He’s not a burner. He’s a short-area pass catcher, a more traditional TE. Like Nicks, he produces with his pads on. I saw good hands and a guy that runs hard. Gave good effort. Had a good 3-cone time. Can block.

My QB has 2 rings. Well, 3 if you want to get technical.

2012 NYG mock - 1: Dwayne Allen TE, 2: Brandon Boykin CB/RS, 3: A.J. Jenkins WR, 4: Vick Ballard RB, 5: Neiko Thorpe S, 6: Rishard Matthews WR/RS, 6: Blake DeChristopher G/T, 7: BPA

the problem I have with him is

he’s only like 8-10 pounds heavier than Ramses Barden. I don’t see him putting on enough weight to play a legit TE. Putting on 30-40 lbs of muscle is a lot…a hell of a lot. It’s not like a DL that can put on some fat as well. Egnew is only about 2 pounds lighter than Kevin Boss.

I hate the thought of the Giants even considering Randy Moss….however…

A source close to the wide receiver confirmed to Yahoo! Sports on Friday that Moss’ comments weren’t a made-for-TV sound bite and he would accept a non-guaranteed contract.

“This is not about money for him, he wants to play,” the source said. “He’ll want to be paid if he makes the team, but nothing up front. He’s not trying to grab a check.”

If we could get him w/ no guarantees, and cut him if he ever even looks at Eli the wrong way w/o any repercussions, hell I’d take a flier.

My fear

He would be a bit like OcHo cinco. Not fast enough to just run past guys, and not skilled enough on the routes for Eli to trust him

I just don’t see it, I know losing MM stings (presumed losing), but we’ve been pretty high on JJ and Barden (the team not the fans) even a first round rookie would be behind them in understanding the offense. Most teams have two established WRs and patch together the rest, I wouldn’t be surprised if we went that route.

actually

losing MM doesn’t sting me at all. I like him, I don’t love him. He’s made ridiculous catches for us, but he’s also been a devastating drive killer as well. I’m extremely ecstatic to see Barden out there. I think this is his year. I only wrote about Moss cuz he said he would play for no guaranteed money. I think I’d take that risk under those circumstances.

The only place I could see him being the #1 is the Bears…which isn’t much of an accomplishment.

Definite Blimp candidate...

However, I don’t believe a damn word written by the media..I’d need to read the entire interview..99.9 percent of the time with these media morons the whole context is intentionally twisted out of proportion…

I agree with him in that the Patriots ARE a "different type of breed"...

They are the type of franchise that loses their last 2 Super Bowl appearances to a team with the lower case ny on their helmets.

honestly, I don't blame him

He would instantly be the #1 deep threat for the Pats. When he gets paid with another team, I’ll be happy for him and wish him well.
