New York Giants News and Notes: Jacobs Changes Course Edition

Good morning, fellow Giants fans. It's 204 days until the Giants kick off the 2012 regular season, and that's not bad considering all but one of the other 31 teams has 207 days until their kickoff. Not to veer too far off course here, but it should be interesting to see who the NFL pits the Giants against in that Thursday opener--could be the Saints, Packers, or any of the teams in the NFC East. Anyway, let's see what news we can find about the Giants this morning.....

Brandon Jacobs Rumors: Jacobs Expects To Return To New York Giants - SB Nation New York
Well, Super Bowl rings certainly do change perspectives, don't they? New York Giants running back Brandon Jacobs, who sounded at times during the 2011 NFL season as if he couldn't wait to get away from the Giants, now says he expects to return to Big Blue for the 2012 season.

I have mixed feelings about the big fella, how about you guys?

New Era Scouting – 2012 NFL Draft Team Needs: New York Giants Edition
The Giants shocked the football world once again and won the Super Bowl by beating Tom Brady and the New England Patriots. They may be the champions, but this is still a team that has many needs, and can continue to get better.

I like that offensive tackle is first on the list here. I've said it before...I'd love for the Giants to grab a left tackle with their first round pick--preferably one that is equally talented, fierce, and gigantic.

Star-divide

New York Giants star Victor Cruz to attend (Tuesday night's) UMass men's basketball game | masslive.com
As if UMass fans didn't have enough incentive to come out to tonight's men's basketball game versus Xavier, it has come to light that New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz (was) in attendance. Multiple sources revealed that Cruz (made) the trip up to Amherst to watch the Minutemen face the Musketeers.

I'm not sure if he actually made it to the game, but what would this notebook be without a Victor Cruz reference?

NFL.com news: Giants' Umenyiora prefers to stay, but says trade makes sense
If Osi Umenyiora indeed has played his last game with the New York Giants, he has a piece of advice for teammate Victor Cruz before he walks out the door. "Make sure the length of his contract is a lot shorter than mine," Umenyiora told Sirius XM NFL Radio, via the New York Daily News, on Monday.

N.Y. Giants collectibles? Spare me | Courier-Post | courierpostonline.com
Here’s good news for Philadelphia Eagles fans. Sure, the Birds have fallen short of Super Bowl success again this year, depriving the region of a long-awaited victory parade. But we’re also missing out on a more dubious prize — the cascade of knickknacks that deluges fans of Super Bowl winners. And just like Andy Reid settling for bargain-basement linebackers, we’re saving big bucks in the process.

Once again, the jokes just write themselves here. Like, the Giants have four sets of knickknacks that the Eagles do not have--diamond-studded knickknacks with Roman numerals on them. The Eagles also have the distinction of being the last team the Patriots beat in a Super Bowl. So they have that, right? Sorry, I couldn't resist.

So i am at my desk drinking coffee and after i have glanced at my e-mails i come to BBV and read updated post on previous day’s posts and keep hitting refresh to see when new posts are up. It seems that Ed etal have things ready to post on certain times which they preset.

So right on the hour the post can pop up at times. Sometimes i may not have enough tome to read everything in detail b4 i post so i just post Let’s Go Giant’s to motivate people who come to post later. The when i get home in the afternoon i come and read and post.

that draft thing must've been made in October

not only that, its wrong about Beatty. I disagree about the LT thing, Beatty should have that position. RT is where any upgrade needs to be. And whether or not they’ll go all out and find players for TE is one thing, but to not even mentioning it? Two players at best are going on the PUP, possibly IR. That’s not a team need?

I guess

The only thing I worry about Beatty is if he is turning into an injury prone player.

Even if we were drafting a tackle, it won’t be in the 1st round unless we can make a trade up or down; otherwise we are either reaching or somehow we get lucky and a T falls to us.

Last time I looked, I think the 4th round was when we realistically could get a tackle for good value.

Beatty is a blocking tight end

But seriously, I think most of us view him as adequate, pretty good, not a world-beater.

If the Giants came across the opportunity to get a week-1 ready, very good LT (although, they still might bring him along slowly or start the season with him at RT) It could help the line quite a bit. All of a sudden you’d have Beatty, Brewer, and even possibly Diehl to mix up the tackles depth chart.

You PLAY to WIN the GAME.
Dear Tebow, please let the Giants beat the Patriots.

by Simms-McConkey on Feb 22, 2012 8:08 AM EST up reply actions

OT

Beatty should be the LT until he proves he cannot do it or cannot stay healthy. Both possible, not probable.

If Diehl is willing to take a BIG paycut, he might be a stopgap at RT until Giants are comfortable Brewer can do it. Diehl MIGHT then be a LT/RT backup.

Or cut Diehl entirely if:
You get an OT in FA or in the draft – one ready to play in year one.

But either way, OT is a need. No question.

Bring lawyers, guns and money to get me out of this one! Stand in the Fire.

by MSP Giant on Feb 22, 2012 8:27 AM EST up reply actions

Brewer is def. the biggest question mark

If he has potential, you should see him competing for the job in training camp this year.

If he becomes a solid starting RT, all of a sudden we’re in decent shape. Petrus, Boothe, and Snee for guards….

Beatty, Brewer, and draft another tackle … a lot depends on Baas. We’re locked into him for 4 years although it looks like after this year, if the team is not still high on him, he could be cuttable. In any case, we should keep our fingers crossed on Bam Bam Baas and the B boys.

If Beatty, Brewer, Boothe, and Baas can all play well, we’re in great shape.

If Brewer is not ready, and Baas can’;t come on strong, we’ve got holes at every position (T,G,C)

You PLAY to WIN the GAME.
Dear Tebow, please let the Giants beat the Patriots.

by Simms-McConkey on Feb 22, 2012 9:24 AM EST up reply actions

WOW...It is clear to me now...

The Giants are obviously just trying to field an offensive line with players whose last names start with the letter “B”.

I’m sure they are working to get someone to change his name to “Betrus”.

Giants Mets, JPP is a MONSTER

by theIke on Feb 22, 2012 8:54 AM EST up reply actions

But at 32 or 2nd round

We are spending a high draft pick on a LT? We already spent a 2nd rounder and we have a full time starter that was playing well and should get better because of a eye injury? Much more pressing needs than a LT.

Tommy Boy twice in 4 years you still can't score more than 17 points. I guess when you dont have an illegal DVD of our defense it makes it much harder now don't it?

by NYG86-90-07-11 on Feb 22, 2012 9:32 AM EST up reply actions

if there's one there, it goes with the BPA thing

we could use a tackle, Brewer’s still a pup and while I think Beatty is good its not like he’s been a rock at LT (at least Diehl never gets hurt).

With the way our offense is going, having 2 LT caliber athletes as bookeneds isn’t a bad thing cuz we’re gonna be pass blocking a lot.

It goes against the cap.

Furthermore franchising a player means that a team has to pay average salary of 5 highest players in that position. MM is not that player that gets franchised by the Giants. We have WRs like JJ and Barden who are developing and Eli has proven that he can make WRs shine. We also have Thomas who can also play STs and then there is Hixon who might let go.

Franchise Tag

The Giants don’t really have anybody I can see who would get the franchise tag now or anytime in the near future. The first one I can see might be JPP when his contract is up. It’s possible they might do it for Tuck when the time comes, but that’s about it.

The football season never ends. It just changes what I'm arguing about depending on the month.

It's sad that Brady's mentor has passed away.

My mother donated a kidney to my sister just about a year ago and I’ve followed Martinez’s struggles for some time now. After all of the drama in finding Martinez a donor…it’s a sad day.

Completely undoes the value of hiring Schiano

Damn Bucs, I had Schiano on my short list of coaches for when TC retires, if he ever does.

My QB has 2 rings. Well, 3 if you want to get technical.

2012 NYG mock - 1: Dwayne Allen TE, 2: Brandon Boykin CB/RS, 3: A.J. Jenkins WR, 4: Vick Ballard RB, 5: Neiko Thorpe S, 6: Rishard Matthews WR/RS, 6: Blake DeChristopher G/T, 7: BPA

The more rings you get

The younger you become. Soon TC will be 20.

More Comedy out of Tampa

Sheridan said one of the biggest lessons he learned during that 2009 season was that you have to keep defenses complex even if your team has been ravaged by injuries and is using mostly reserves and newcomers.

Respect all fear none.

He is a fool

Perry did the exact opposite and the our defense changed overnite. The guy is not a D coordinator period!

Tommy Boy twice in 4 years you still can't score more than 17 points. I guess when you dont have an illegal DVD of our defense it makes it much harder now don't it?

New Era article - wow

I don’t think that I’ve ever seen an article with so many misspellings and grammatical mistakes, and that includes fan posts.

Some of the analysis was not too bad, but if you are doing this at a professional level you need to know a little bit more about the teams you cover.

Osi needs to be quiet about his contract

He received a 7 year deal for 41 million in 2005 with 15 million guaranteed and a 4.5 million signing bonus…this year he is slated to make 4.6 million, which isn’t bad…I know it isn’t top tier money, but still. He made 7 million a year over the first 3 years!!!

It would be like if I were in a job that paid me between 50K and 70K a year, but my employer said that they will pay me 125K the first year, but 50K the following 4. I’m at the bottom level the last four years, but was substantially paid the first year to make up for it…I can’t complain about in the fifth year of our agreement saying I’m one of the best at what I do and I’m not getting paid for it.

David Diehl

I know we have been pounding on Diehl and the statistics prove he’s been a little less than average the past couple years. However, he has two rings and I will never forget the playoff game vs the Niners that we blew/refs screwed us on. Our O-line was dropping like flies and he had a stinger of some sort and could barely move and stayed in the game. Tough dude. Respect and thanks for your service David.

First game of the year will be...

The Packers!

At least, that’s the way I’d bet, anyway.

Also: I can’t help but love Brandon Jacobs. Perhaps it’s a little irrational, but on those (increasingly rare) occasions when he gets into the secondary and punishes a guy, that’s basically my favorite part of football right there.

Jaccobs

He needs to go…he sucks…. Bradshaw runs harder plus can create yards. Jaccobs a tough running back check out his stats on fourth and one…let him go use his cash on Mario and Thomas.

by trinity giant on Feb 22, 2012 10:10 PM EST reply actions

Jacobs redid his contract to make room for Bradshaw signing.

It is not RBs fault when OL cannot create the holes for them to run. Only thing about BJ now is his huge salary. he has said that he is willing to redo his salary to allow Giants to maintain the salary cap when signing players.

We do have a need at TE and he can fill in that role too as a backup TE. He is a very good blocker and he can catch the ball on the run. He knows our system well and is loyal. We have to consider all aspects before we let go of BJ.

This is not the 2007 team.
