Giants Talking Too Much?

Are the New York Giants talking a little too much heading into Super Bowl XLVI Sunday against the New England Patriots? Actually, let me phrase that another way, since with all the cameras, microphones and media requirements of Super Bowl (hello, Osi, nice of you to join the media circus) players and coaches have to talk. A lot.

The better question is, are the Giants actually saying too much when it is their time to talk?

ESPN's Dan Graziano wrote today that "the Giants have been yapping for weeks." Is that really true? Maybe the Giants have talked more than we're accustomed to, but that has also come during their best stretch of football in four seasons. So, maybe they have been entitled to act, and speak, life they feel good about themselves.

Star-divide

Defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul has been particularly brash this week, saying New England's Tom Brady "is just a quarterback. It's not like he is God" and hinting that Brady felt pressure that did not exist.

"I think it won't have much impact on his performance, because ... if you look at Week 9 when we played them, it's like he felt us," he said. "We went back on the film, we watched the film and we didn't really rush as we can as a defense. ... He was throwing balls on the ground and stuff."

JPP isn't necessarily wrong. I can remember a couple of plays on which Brady spun away from pressure that didn't exist.

Mario Manningham and Victor Cruz haven't necessarily been wrong this week when they have let their excitement show over matching up with Patriots receiver turned nick cornerback Julian Edelman, a matchup they have plainly said they know they should win.

No doubt it makes for better headlines when guys say things that can be considered bulletin-board material, even borderline bulletin-board material. It certainly spices up the week.

I would, however, rather have the Giants keep some of those thoughts to themselves.

I want them to be confident.

It’s a thin line, you know? I feel like this is how the Giants always are and the media is overblowing it this week.

JPP can say whatever he wants, i think hes going to be on beast mode. Coughlin and Eli are staying humble, they will lead us where we need to go.

confidence in the press sometimes seems like cockiness, but at the end of the day, we’re just hoping our team plays better (and scores more points) than the other.

"Oh sir, the Giants of New York took on the Packers of Green Bay. And in the end, the Giants triumphed by kicking an oblong ball made of pigskin through a big "H". It was a most ripping victory."

There's a fine line

between confidence and arrogance. As long as the Giants are doing their best John Madden imitation by spewing the obvious, they are on the right side of that line. Since they’re not taking shots at the Patriots they have done nothing wrong.

I think this team has seen stuff on tape they feel very comfortable in being able to capitalize on. Its almost laughable compared to who theyve already beaten. I just hope they keep the fire burning b/c …..as we all know…..on any given sunday

There is no such thing as "talking too much"

when you’re talking about Super Bowl week. There is nothing but cameras and microphones in these guys’ faces for days on end before the game starts. What other event in the world has something specifically called “Media Day”? Everybody’s talking too much because there are far too many questions being asked. That’s the Super Bowl for ya.

1) Tom Brady is just a QB
2) It’s not like he is God – If JPP is wrong on this we have no hope anyway
3) Every QB we faced felt phantom pressure when we played our way. People underestimate our physical nature cause we aren’t thugs.

Can’t get excited about this. If he said Tom Brady is a football God and we have no chance, I’d be up at night worried.

The problem is you haven't the time or luxury of listening to the players interviews..

In their entirety..the shithead media whores parse three quarters of what answers they get and then ‘pimp’ them into articles…If they print everything that is said..There would be no story for them to scrape a few bucks out of their sewer..I watched every single interview, all week..There’s not one Goddamned thing players from either team say that could be considered controversial..nothing..What are they all supposed to say..We suck and are going to lose..Fortunately I’m retired so I can listen to all of these interviews and then read how they get twisted out of context by these asshole reporters..I’m so glad the players are locked down now and don’t have to endure that crap from these morons..

Agree...

Ed, I’m with you. I’m glad they are confident but I’d rather they keep it to themselves. Makes me more nervous than I already am. Part of it taking things out of context. But the Patriots are facing similar questions and we aren’t hearing near as many one-liners out of them. Unfortunately this will be part of the story line if the Giants lose. If they win, we will not hear any more about it.

ESPN is desperate for some kind of controversy this week

I blame them for the most part, they deliberately ask questions to try to get controversial soundbites. Instead of analyzing the matchup, certain news outlets prefer to focus on the drama because they don’t really know that much about football.

I remember it being pretty much the same in Super Bowl XLII what with the Plax “guarantee” plus I’m sure there was a lot more hooting and hollering we’ve since forgotten about.

Giant Introduction

Just wanted to introduce myself by re-posting a response to Bobbiblue that I had written last week but had to wait for my account to become active. Not a bandwagoner… but a legacy! Go ahead and talk Giants. Be confidant. Now go back it up! I look forward to many more Giant memories.

Superbowl XXI Last Memory
I have been reading BBV for a couple of years now but I had never created an account until now. Bobbi you have been one of my favorite reads and your memory of not being able to watch the game with your dad inspired me to now to share mine as well. Matter of fact, all BBVers tales played a part. I was 15 years old and watching sports wih my dad was a big part of my life with him. He oversaw the concession stands in many sports arena across the east coast so we saw many sporting events in person. Being from New York originally it was mostly the Yankees but the Giants were his favorite football team. I didn’t care but to spend time with him. I remember how excited he was during that game and how we cheered and jumped and celebrated the first Giants Superbowl he ever saw. Unfortunately, it was also his last. He died 3 weeks later while on a business trip at the young age of 38. 25 years later I still get a lil misty thinking of that last big event in our lives together. Now I am ready to watch the Giants in the Superbowl yet again. This time with my son who turns 16 on Superbowl Sunday but never knew his grandfather that inspired my love of Big Blue.

I have been saying this all week

Most of the Giant comments over the past week have be transformed into trash talk.

Cruz/Ham/Nicks watching film and observing the Pat D = Patriots defense will be dominated and Edelman sucks.
Canty’s message to fans about a parade = Giants guarnettee parade.

I guess I'm a little old school,

and I love the confidence, but I’ve never looked up to guys who had a lot to say before a game, or before a fight. It doesn’t seem to fit in with how the Giants have always been.

Well, the other night when Ed got interviewed...I stayed tuned in and they played the Bears..

Super Bowl Shuffle song….That excuded confidence..It was funny..I hadn’t heard it in a very long time..but they went on to kick ass and take names in the game..I have no problem with players saying they are taking no prisoners..

Yeah, that's cool. I don't feel strongly about it,

I just get a little surprised when I hear the Giants saying it. And I have to confess, I still like the Paul Brown approach to touchdowns. But times change . . .

Muhammad Ali

Accurately predicted the rounds in which he knocked several opponents. It’s different with a team sport, as it’s usually the case that one person puts everybody on the spot.

The Giants, however, are exhibiting confidence as a team, so I’m not worried about any of the talk.

People will call it a motivator for the opposition, but that’s what it’s all about. If you’re afraid to say that you feel confident enough to win the game, don’t take the field, please and thank you.

I'm Not Sure The Pats Are Confident

I think they think we’ve got their number. They may be right. The Hoody will come up with something we haven’t seen, but barring injury or fixing the refs, I just don’t see how Eli & the receivers don’t romp and outscore the Pats — and the Pats see the same things we do.

Maybe I am the one who’s overconfident. I hope the team isn’t. But the Pats just don’t look or sound confident to me at all.

im a 20 year old junior at rutgers and I’ve been using BBV since around the draft last year… i’d just like to say that this has been the most exciting season of Giants football that I’ve ever watched. through all the ups and downs, all of the bad performances this year and the great ones, the team got hot at the right time and now will hopefully win the super bowl… I’ve got to say that this whole year was a thrill ride and can be capped with a championship

I'd like to thank the good Lord for making me a Yankee fan.

And as i went to college in south jersey my juniour yr was 2007 so we won it as i was celebrating at a frat house full of drunk eagle fans. And now this ahh i dont know how it can get any better after 07 but it is and now Eli is going for number 2 only way to top 07 is to have my NY Rangers bring home the cup. Wow a lombardi and lord stanley in one year ahh what a great start to the decade if that can happen.

ESPN 1050 was trying to say

JPP says they rattled Brady in Nov. But they only won on a last second TD by Eli. If the Pats won, would they still be saying that?

Ummm Yes ESPN they would. Because in the week 17 2007 game, the Giant defense rattled Brady a few times but the Giants still lost the game.

I think thats why Giselle is asking for prayers

She sees how stressed Tom has been b/c he can’t play every position & he needs to perform so amazingly, that the Giants won’t stand a chance. He wants to play so good, he won’t need to worry about the D being able to stop Eli from scoring the game winner as time expires.

by state I mean Woody Johnson and the NYJets. Who cares what they say.

You know I never realized how hated the GIants were by national/local people until this playoff run. I mean I always thought Dallas was the team everyone universely loved/hated but the Giants are getting venom from people that flat out don’t like them. I know people are picking them thats not what I mean but the overall tone is the Giants are the bad guys and poor Bellicheck and Brady, just going for another Super Bowl and legacy getting overlooked. I mean come on!!!! They’re the Pats, Brady rubs in everybodys face during games and Bellicheck is about as poor of a sport as there is. Don’t get me wrong I like both of them a lot but man lets be real hear. You could hear in some of these guys voices that they putting everytype of jinx on the G-Men.

from how wrong they were to totally dismiss us before the season started. And when we were 7-7 and they all said that whoever won the division would be one n’ done. And when there was no way possible we could beat the Packers because their offense was just too powerful.

People hate being wrong. Instead of owning their mistakes like adults, they focus their anger and hate on the Giants for exposing them as the fools they are.

Which is just fine because we feed on their hate and anger and it only makes us stronger.

First comment here

Hi everyone, I’m a Ravens fan first, but I’ve been following the Giants all my life & they’re my favorite NFC team. My father & uncle used to attend Giants games in Yale Bowl and my grandfather was a Giants fan from the 1930s until he died 10 years ago. I was a big fan of the 80s teams, Joe Morris is one of my favorite players of all time.
I was on egg shells the entire game pulling for the Giants when these teams met in SB XLII. Like OHGIANTSMAN said in the post above, I’m more a legacy than a bandwagoner. Plus, I think you’ll find that everyone who isn’t a Pats fan is rooting for the Giants this week (okay, fans of the Eagles, Skins and Cowboys are probably rooting for the Pats too).

Back to the topic:
I haven’t heard anything out of bounds yet. If Cruz, JPP, or anyone else was running around predicting a shutout or saying they expect to roll up 55 points, that would be stupid. I see a team exuding confidence not arrogance, and that should be encouraging to all the fans here. Coughlin goes back 30 years with Belichik, I’m sure he’s laid down the law about dissing The Hoodie.

I hope Brady gets “rattled” early and often Sunday night.

I said the other day what Ed us saying

and got torched.

Plain and simple, keep it to yourself, don’t motivate the other guy. It does not help you win and might help you lose.

That said, I favor Giants slightly. 38-31. But it will be nerve racking on both sidelines. Both teams are capable of exploding.

All the Giants should play like Mark Bavaro.
TQ, DD and KMac Must Go!
TC, PF, KG, will stay but should go for the long term good.

My Confidence

Was at an all time high after the NFC Championship. We just destroyed ATL, beat GB in their own house (which is becoming Eli’s house!) and dispatched a very good 49ers team in always hostile SF. After that game i was like bring on the Pats! I was like Canty earlier today: Bring on the Confetti! As that week went on and onto this week my confidenced has waned. It was 100%, no doubt, it’s now i say about 70%. Still a majority, but its becoming clearer that this week off has most likely helped the Pats more than Giants. They should have a much healthier Gronk and the Giants team that has been of fire in playoffs, that momentum has cooled. Seems too that all we keep hearing is the Giants players running their mouths. Bravado or confidence? Also, all this media Giants love has got me thinking. Why are so many people on Big Blue? Why, all of a sudden we are hearing people say they rather have Eli over Brady? What happened to the media and what have they done to the Brady lovin’ fools that used to run it?
This is where you come in Coughlin. Keep this team focused, on fire, and come up with a gameplan for the ages, and Canton will humbly receive you.

"Am I not destroying my enemies when I make friends of them?"

Someone said they missed me?

Are the Giants talking too much? For me, yeah. I like ‘em focused, when they just let their play do the talking. The Pats should not be underestimated. What happened in week 9 or early 2008 isn’t a forecast for what’s going to happen on Sunday. Or maybe it is. I hope it is. You know Brady is preparing himself to play the game of his life, with a pinch of revenge mixed in, same for Belicheck. Stay focused G-Men. Prepare well. Believe you can win. Just don’t start bragging before the snap. No need for that. Can’t wait for this game though, gonna watch it from the Hollywood Hills. Best to all fellow G fans! Let’s get another ring!

I don't like...

all the talk and I don’t like that people are picking the Giants. Shut up and stay under the radar. You know the Pats want to revenge 07, but the one thing that keeps coming to my mind is….

How often do you think Eli has had the chance to do something to out shine Peyton? Not very. I’m sure Eli is going to be freakin crazy on for this game.

We’ll have plenty of time to strut after we win. I’d hate to get all this way and start to get cocky to the point of loosing focus.

Keep your eye on the prize boys and let your play do your talking.

PS – Hey Bill, if you think we are falling for any of this Gronk (what a stupid name) news, you are sadly mistaken. I’m sure the Giants have always game planned for him to play.

See you Sunday Bill

Any amount of talking

just shows your own insecurities. If you are confident in who you are and what you are going to do, you don’t have to say jack crap and produce it on the field.

My Wife is a Patriot's fan...
"Giants rely on fumbles and stripping the ball. If the pats secure the ball, then the pats win, but if they fumble or let the ball get striped than the giants win. every game the giants play they always benefit from the other teams bonehead mistakes (fumbled or striped) not from thier skills. The giants are a dirty team, I can’t think of any othe team as dirty as the giants. They try to strip the ball as hard as they can because they know they can’t win a fair game." by EaglesNeedD on Jan 23, 2012 2:01 AM EST

Too good for the Pats

Been following this team for 45 years and imo, it is the best Giants team I have seen.
The Giants would have to lose this game; turnovers, bad special team play, dropped or tipped passes, etc. for NE to win……..injuries finally went away and the true character of this team came through. The Giants are the better team, Belichick doesn’t wear any pads, and Coughlin is just as good a coach as the hooddie is.

I can see Belichick using a game plan as he used against Buffalo in 91, let the Giants run for yardage to keep them from passing, but this time around, I do not think it will help. Before the Gmen could spread it around, play action was a big part of their O and they can beat NE in a wide open or a tightly played game.
