Mel Kiper 2012 NFL Mock Draft 2.0: Dwayne Allen, TE, Clemson To Giants

I must have been reading Mel Kiper Jr.'s mind when I began my series of 2012 NFL Draft Prospect Profiles with a look at Clemson tight end Dwayne Allen.

That is because Kiper today selected Allen for the Giants [Insider Only] in version 2.0 of his 2012 NFL Mock Draft, just released today.

Here is what Kiper said about Allen to the Giants:

The Super Bowl will provide plenty of good memories for Giants fans, but from a personnel standpoint, people should also remember the injuries they suffered at tight end, and Allen is the best one in this draft. He's a fantastic athlete, can create matchup problems and further diversify the Giants' offense as they maximize this window of exceptional quarterback play. The Giants could also look for help on the offensive line, or target a linebacker here, but I expect Allen's profile to rise during the workout process, and he should represent a lot of value here.

Oh, and in case you were wondering about this. Yes, it scares me to be thinking the saw way as Kiper.

I would love a big, physical tight end that can block...

But if he is going to be as highly valued as Kiper thinks, why would he fall to us at 32? *basking*I still love that we have the 32nd pick*basking*

And Ed…

Oh, and in case you were wondering about this. Yes, it scares me to be thinking the [same] way as Kiper.

Step one is admitting the problem, step two is doing something about it.

not many people have glaring needs for TEs. And this draft is real top heavy at CB and WR

I can see close to 5 or 6 CBs and 4 WRs going in the first round. On top of that, you have 6 or so OL, 5ish pass rushers, plus 3 QBs and 1 or 2 RBs and a few LBs sprinkled in, and you can see him dropping lol

nope, but back then we picked at 19. Kirkpatrick is in the same class of prospect as Prince.

ranked as maybe the 8th or 9th best in the draft. No way he lasts till 32

Still, I wouldn’t be opposed to using some of our 9 picks and trade up to get somebody like a David DeCastro.

A lot of teams go for need!

I think as we look at mock drafts, those mocking look at the team needs and the quality of the player as the picks roll along. Other teams may need a TE too, but they have other bigger holes to fix. I have seen Glenn go the the Steelers. I know I have seen posts dissing Bleacher but today’s post has some very good options for our team through picks seven, and yes Allen is at one along with a few other OLs. I am sure you will get to a LBs from NC State and Utah State that intrigue me in the 2nd or 3rd rounds. I am sure you will get to them Ed along the way. Here is the link…

http://www.thehuddlereport.com/Free/mockdraftscoring.shtml

Mel Kiper usually is one of the best at getting picks right. If you guys REALLY want the inside scoop on who gets picked where…go for Rick Gosselin’s mock draft. It comes out in early April, so you’ll have to wait for awhile, but he gets around 60-75% of the picks correct.

He actually talks to team representatives and gets a really, really good idea of who’s going to be the pick. I’ve won a lot of money from friends by betting on 1st rounds over the years by looking at his mock drafts.

Interesting data

This site is essentially tracking how good these guys are at picking who will be drafted where. I guess that’s the point of mock drafts, so it makes sense.

I’d like to see who the best talent evaluators are based on players 2-3 years out. That would tell me who’s got the best big board. The problem is injuries, coaching etc, are as important as a player’s skills the day he’s drafted.

Blue is the color of melancholy and honesty
Green is the color of inexperience, envy and nausea.

by roguetrader on Feb 15, 2012 4:15 PM EST up reply actions

Talent evaluation is inherently subjective, no?

For example. Giants in 2010 got JPP at 15 who’s an all-pro. Falcons got Sean Weatherspoon at 19, who looks to be on his way towards being one of the best 4-3 OLBs. Who was a better talent evaluator, Reese, or Dimitroff who got a great player 4 pick later.

Though you are right, I’d love to see who hit on more picks and who didn’t.

"We will not be denied." - Antrel Rolle

by BigBlueIntervention on Feb 15, 2012 4:18 PM EST up reply actions

Talent evaluation is subjective

you are correct sir. There is no way to compare and contrast different players in different systems. That is part of the beauty of the NFL.

Would JPP been as good had he been an Eagle? No one can say. Coaching, Veteran players and overall team mentality enabled him to thrive in this environment. What about Philly?? we could only guess.

Regardless of what happens, No playoffs, playoffs, no superblow, superblow.... The 2011/2012 is one of my favorite Giants Teams of all time.

Had he just gotten a competive contract from a hard nosed team like Pit, B-More, NYG, or the Pats (at that time) i think he would have been a way better pro and still highly productive.

But when you get a hundred million from a team where Clinton Portis seemed to be the assistant coach/ GM then you know things were not going to end well.

This Allen kid looks pretty darn good...

He may very well be around when we pick…I can’t think of any other teams really needing TE help.

You gotta look deeper than just TE help

You have to see which teams have young QB’s, TE’s are a young QB’s best friend

Also you have to look at who needs receiver help especially an inside receiver, may be better to get a TE than a slot receiver at that point in the first round.

Also the BPA aspect, he may just be that high on some people’s boards so i wouldnt be surprised if he’s long gone.

Most young teams with young qbs are drafting much higher in the draft. They may have to trade down or up to get allen b4 us.

That is the big question...TE...

I really don’t see them having much choice..We need help at that position…One thing I do fear is that other teams know we need help at TE..so we might wind up getting screwed. They don’t want the Champs to cover a weakness, so they’ll pick a guy like that to prevent it..

Wow!

I guess some teams could think that way, but when they have needs in other areas, I can’t see that. Could open up another area of need like OL or LB for the best player available.

I wonder..

If somebody really wants him, it probably wouldn’t be hard to trade for the Pats pick at 31. They already have 2 1st rounders and 2 second rounders I seem to recall. We all know the Pats love to get even more picks.

if other teams think that by selecting someone to hurt another team

then they are just plain out retarded. Just like when the Eagles signed Steve Smith. They did not sign him because they needed him or wanted him. They did it out of fear. The Eagles truly fear the lowercase ny. As they should. But to draft a player to prevent him being drafted by a rival I don’t see happening. Free Agency yes, the draft not so much.

Although we’re not that great at linebacker, I’d be happy to keep what we’ve got, let the young guys develop for another year and build on the experience they got in 2011. Jones and Williams will have learned a lot from their first season. If we’re still mediocre a year from now, then fair enough.

Mayock on Mercilus: I don’t think he’s stout at the point of attack. Borderline late one to mid two.
Mayock says Zeitler, Konz and DeCastro could be first round picks

I really like Fleener, I think he has the frame to get bigger and become a better blocker and i know he is a very good receiver.

I also understand why you wouldnt like him especially if you look at the highlights available, it probably seems as if he is just a product of a very good system that faces some bad defenses.

To be honest i dont think we go TE at all, especially if the past serves as any indication of the future.

Allen
Separation Skills 2 Footwork could be crisper on 90-degree breaks and doesn’t always separate from underneath man coverage but physical route runner that can box out defenders. Shows some savvy on downfield routes. Can tempo and set up breaks with change of speed on post and flag routes. Zone buster that settled into pockets.

Ball Skills 2 Lets ball get to frame on occasion but above average overall ball skills. Extended arms and snatched passes thrown above head. Appears to have big hands and can snag passes with one hand. Above average body control and can adjust to back shoulder passes. Held onto the ball after taking big hit. Tracked the deep ball well.

Big Play Ability 2 Can flex out and reached top-end speed quickly when didn’t get slowed down at the line of scrimmage. Fast enough to work the seam and exploit downfield pockets in zone looks. Not going to make many defenders miss but fast enough to rip of chunk of yards when gets room to work after the catch.

Competitiveness 2 Drives legs and draggs defenders for additional yards after catch. Not afraid to work the middle of the field. Would like to see more of a mean streak though played with an edge at times but willing and spirited blocker.

Blocking 3 A lot to like about upside but an average overall blocker at this point. Can seal the front side and cut off backside. Adequate awareness in blitz pick up when asked to help out in pass protection though could sink and anchor better. Sound hand placement and fought to sustain in-line blocks but leaned into defenders instead of rolling hips and slipped off some blocks. Can cover up linebackers and took adequate angles but can be step late locating second level assignments.

None of the TE's picked in the 1st or early-mid 2nd rounds of the draft recently

Have been busts. Obviously you only mentioned “athletic TE’s” but I wouldn’t say Dwayne Allen’s considered a pure athlete.

2010: Jermaine Gresham, Gronk, Ed Dickson
2009: Brandon Pettigrew
2008: Dustin Keller, John Carlson, Fred Davis
2007: Greg Olson, Zach Miller
2006: Vernon Davis, Marcedes Lewis

That’s a pretty good track record, IMO.

More Mayock

MM on Jeffery: He’s not in my top four. There’s all those rumors he put weight on. If his agent is smart, he’ll come in at 220.
Mayock says what big WRs like Jeffery, Sanu and Fuller run will be important.
Big and fast is good. Big and slow is bad. If runs well, no one is going to say a word. At combine or pro day, he has to run well.
Mayock has a 1st RD grade on Rueben Randle.
Mayock says he doesn’t have a 1st round tight end.

I agree on the TE remark

But one or two will be drafted in round 1 and though i dont think either TE belongs in round one, i do think they are both high 2’s and that sometimes that is the same as a low 1 depending on when you draft.

Last year there were really only two QB’s that were first round worthy and one of them went in the second round lol.

That just shows that boards differ drastically from team to team.

Brandon Pettigrew the prospect was worth it. I'm not sure if the player himself was.

Allen was used more as an inline blocker in his career until Clemson realized they had a playmaker on their hands. He can block better than Pettigrew can, and I’ve already gushed about his body control and route running.

Fair enough

I got them both in the 30’s on my big board but it all depends on the scheme they go to…….see Beckum….. I think Fleener is more Dallas Clark and Allen is more Vernon Davis, those are very very loose comparisons by the way, i just meant as far as their game goes.

I cant knock your evaluation though.

He recently did a TV interview in NOLA where he said he is currently at 80%, and intends to participate in all the Giants’ offseason activities. He doesn’t expect to be 100% by then, but he is rapidly improving. He might be at close to 100% physically by the time the season starts.

Remember when he ran a 4.84 40 last year? He should have all of his straight line speed back, not sure how he’ll be cutting.

Really rooting for the kid, though. Between him and Herzlich, the Giants will have some real heart stories on their team.

It's really amazing

when you think about it.

And although he’s been getting plenty of praise lately, I still feel like some of it (from certain outlets) isn’t 100% genuine. I don’t know, maybe I’m still adjusting to hearing Eli actually get credit for his team’s success for once.

And to think some still can’t give him the credit he deserves….Not just places like BGN or other rival fan boards, but even more mainstream places.

Oh well. If they can’t see it now, they never will.

"We will not be denied." - Antrel Rolle

by BigBlueIntervention on Feb 15, 2012 7:42 PM EST up reply actions

Yep

In 2007, his playoff numbers were very nice overall, but there could still be made a point that it was more efficiency than anything. He only threw like 185 yards in TB. He only attempted 16 passes (I think) in Dallas. He didn’t throw any TDs in GB.

This year, they can’t even try to argue that. The only thing they could see is that he didn’t HAVE to play as well as he did, since the defense only gave up more than 17 points once in their last six games. But that’s just the last excuse for someone who can’t let go of their preconceived ideas about Eli, and a terrible one at that, because it doesn’t at all take away from what Eli actually did, which was to make sure the defense didn’t have to worry about giving up some points.

Take the years Rivers had this season...

If Eli plays like that next year it will erase everything he has done so far in his career. Rivers played like shit and was still respected by most analysts. Eli won’t have that luxury…he needs to play at this level or better for the rest of his career or the haters will tear him apart.

And I used blasphemous

because I gotta stuck up for Romo a little and say the criticism of him is mostly ridiculous. He, like Rivers, has one of the best all-time regular season QB ratings. He, like Rivers, has done nothing in the playoffs. You can throw Matt Ryan in there too with Rivers.

But Romo is the only one who gets killed for it.

This is gonna sound blasphemous

But for all the criticism a guy like Romo gets (and formerly Eli), others like Rivers and Ryan go unscathed.

I love listening to analysts who trip all over themselves to say that SD is one of the most talented teams in football, yet when the subject of “Why does Rivers still not have a ring when Eli and Ben have two?” comes up, they talk about how Rivers doesn’t have the teams that those two have.

Never mind the fact that Rivers has more INTs than TDs in the postseason….Gotta love the double standards.

I agree with Adams or Glenn.

Allen is 6’4 255 and pretty athletic. If you are looking for this year’s Jimmy Graham, it’d probably be Ladarius Green. 6’6 240 and uberathletic. Though he’d probably have to get coached up on blocking.

This is why

I’d be stunned if we took Green at any point in this draft.

Allen theoretically appeals more to this team because he’s already pretty well-developed as a blocker, in addition to having the size and athleticism the Giants covet for just about any position in the draft.

I wish I could remember which clown tried to tell me Nnamdi was one of the best tacklers in the NFL
Asomugha played 890 snaps and missed 12 of his 52 tackle attempts in 2011, ranking him 100th out of 101 cornerbacks. He missed a tackle every 4.3 attempts, a number “bested” only by the Redskins’ Kevin Barnes (3.9).

Rogers-Cromartie wasn’t much better, ranking 98th on the list. He had seven misses in 32 attempts, missing a tackle every 4.6 attempts. Even Samuel could be found at the bottom of this list, ranking 91st with a 5.3 tackle efficiency.

Making matters worse, the Eagles allowed Dimitri Patterson — ranked as the fourth-best tackler on this list — to leave for the Browns after the 2010 season. Patterson played two years in Philadelphia, starting nine games in 2010.

Plenty of factors went into the failure of the “Dream Team,” but the collective whiffing of its vaunted secondary obviously played a role.

your needs, your needs, how about my needs?!

The giants had success without drafting based on needs per se in the first round. I mean, if there is TE worth a first round or a second round pick, why force him up? I’m pretty sure the pick could be spent on a lot of other positions with better players and the Giants will draft or sign a TE when the price is right.

Wow why is all bold

This is not the 2007 team.
2011 NYG will have their own legacy.

On one hand t’d be nice to get the top TE with the 32nd pick, but there could be some teams wanting to copy the success teams have had with young athletic TE’s (Graham, Gronk, etc). If so he won’t last. There are usually some very athletic TE’s available in rounds 2-4 though.

JR and company, Might wait with an tight end

there are 3 Tes with 1-2 round value. They might just wait and pick an tight end in the 2nd round and pick the 3rd TE that drops.
