Trading Up
I know: JR loves his draft picks. We love draft picks. And most importantly, we love JR's draft picks.
But in looking ahead to the draft, me wonders: We're looking at having 9 picks this year - 7 rounds + 2 comp picks. Where are we going to put all these guys on our roster?
Last year's draft and UDFA harvest has left us with a young roster flush with 2nd year guys. We have practice squad guys that we've stashed and look to be ready to make an impact (Dan DePalma, Christian Hopkins at a minimum). We've got IR'd guys like Adrian Tracy that we've held onto for 2 years that should be getting healthy again.
That's a lot of young bodies that still haven't gotten a full chance to play yet.
So let me raise a sacrilege here:
Should we zigzag away from our usual MO and actually trade up to get higher value picks, but less of them?
Let's say we end up with 5 picks overall, but all higher value?
Does that make sense? I don't know what I think about it, but I think it's an interesting idea to kick around...
What say you?

He's certainly done it before. Did it with Ramses Barden.
But I’d like to think he’s going to keep all and create competition. That forces peeps to play their best.

We won't trade up in the 1st round
the Giants have cap issues. I doubt we trade up in the first round. The new trend is to trade down and accumulate many picks.
Jacobs to Eli: You're a beast, man. I can't say that enough!
Pats and Eagles
certainly do that, we haven’t shown that tendency to this point – much as I personally like that strategy.
This year, with our roster, it’s going to be difficult to keep all 9 picks, though, especially with the load of guys we have coming off IR and the ones we’re developing on the practice squad.

9 Picks
I just don’t know what we do with all those bodies at camp. Could be better off having 5 targeted guys that we love, that we know we’ll keep. I could even see us trading down out of the 32 pick, and trading some of the lower picks – then we’d have a cluster of picks in rounds 2, 3 and 4.
Again, I am torn, because I also believe in the “Black Swan”/lottery aspect of draft picks – the more picks you have,. the more chances you have of hitting on some in unexpected ways. That’s where you find the Jacquain Williamses, the Ahmad Bradshaws…hard to say.
I see trading down more than trading up
as a more likely possibility, with the Draft deep in a ton of different positions, depending on who gets taken in the 1st.. I could see up trading down for more.
Regardless of what happens, No playoffs, playoffs, no superblow, superblow.... The 2011/2012 is one of my favorite Giants Teams of all time.
But
with 9 picks, I don’t see where we are fitting these guys on our roster. Just look at all the young talent that’s backlogged on our current roster, practice squad, IR list…we are already loaded at many positions with guys who need a chance to play. I’d be surprised if we traded down to accumulate 11, 12, 13 picks or something like that.
Or maybe we exchange them for 2013 or 2014 picks? One of these years we’re going to be in a position to do a major roster turnover, I just don’t see it happening for a couple years at least.

We had a good situation last year
Our rookies beat out our older 2nd years. That same type of situation could occur again. That way, who ever wins out the competition, won out the competition. BPA even down practices.
Regardless of what happens, No playoffs, playoffs, no superblow, superblow.... The 2011/2012 is one of my favorite Giants Teams of all time.
that's why
we don’t aggressively seek FA or sign our FAs. The NFL is a business. Fan get attached to their players. The business side of football knows there’s younger and cheaper players ready to replace vets.
Jacobs to Eli: You're a beast, man. I can't say that enough!
All True
And I’m with you in following that approach most every year.
I just look at our current situation and it seems there are very clear areas to address – say the OL and TE. Would it be better to use those 9 picks to trade up and get a handful of guys we absolutely love, rather than settle for what falls to us at 32 and at the bottom of each round?
I know that’s more of a “needs” philosophy – but the cap seems to be forcing us to try to address needs through the draft more than free agency. I doubt we will sign one decent name free agent because we’re maxed out capwise.
So instead of signing a Carl Nicks to play G, what if we tried to trade up to get, say, David DeCastro?

I myself would love any upgrades to the Oline
but to watch JR trade up for any player other than a Franchise QB. I dont think he will take that route.
I bet JR doesnt even consider our Oline as a potential need… just something through time, that needs to be adjusted and consistenltly upgraded. No need to sell out for a OL, we just won the superbowl with the players we have. I bet, if he moves for anyone, its a DE/DT/LB that WILL be a game changer on defense. An Athletic Freak that will ensure we dont have to worry about that position for at least 5 years.

I Hear Ya
It’s more the concept of trading up to get a gamechanger that I like. A defensive freak would be fine with me as well. :)

hey just know
when we finally do move up to get picks… It will be worth the wait.

Up or Down
It will be worth it baby. ;) Whatever JR decides to do, I defer to his plan.
I’d just hate to draft 9, 10, 11 quality guys and have to cut a bunch of them because our roster is too stocked – when it might be better to draft 5 blue chippers and keep all 5.

32nd pick
Is this a pick where we can be somewhat in the driver’s seat for potential trades? I might be over thinking it. The last pick of the first round has to carry some trade value considering the break in the draft. Everyone and anyone has all night to talk with team who has 1st pick/2nd round (Rams). In my mind that would cause the value of that pick to rise (competition from many suitors for the pick). The last pick of the 1st round carries an arbitrarily higher value (based on pool of draftees) but probably will garner as much competition from other teams…
Again, I might be over thinking this…but I would be agreeable to traded the 32nd pick for an additional 2nd and 4th (maybe a 3rd instead of 4th)…
The flip side to this is the New England Patriots. The kind of did a similar thing. Kept trading down, kept trading down. Now their roster is shockingly low on defensive talent and limited offensive weapons (Gronk, Welker, Hernandez)….I’m happy just being a fan and not the GM
Interesting Point
about the overnight wheeling-and-dealing issue.
The Patriots, I think, have the right approach to the draft overall with all the trading down and hoarding picks – but they just have not done well with who they’ve actually picked. Give us their strategy – or give them our scouting department and philosophy – and I think it’d be a home run.

Is that based on draft philosophy, this year’s crop, what?
This isn’t only about Round 1, it’s about consolidating 9 picks into a smaller, higher value class.

Eli's a QB
that situation is unique and only applies to one particular situation. I’d say it doesn’t even count. Barden was a 3rd rounder in a year which we had 10 picks. A few by way of the supplemental round and two extra via trade. Another unique situation.
Both situations aren’t occurring this year unless we trade Osi and get some extra picks. So, not gonna happen.

We Have 9 Picks
7 + 2 comp. So the Barden situation is pretty much an exact match for this year, no?
by Pink Flamingo on Feb 17, 2012 11:23 AM EST up reply actions
no.
we had two extra picks from the Shockey trade. The comp picks don’t really count as they’re untradable.

?
What’s the practical difference?
So, we’d have to keep the 2 comp picks but the other 7 are all tradeable.
Bottom line, we have 9 picks total. They all translate into real players.
by Pink Flamingo on Feb 17, 2012 1:01 PM EST up reply actions
er...
7 picks, one comp and two from shockey trade. Practical is that you had 9 tradable picks, this year still the 7.
We’re not trading up. Bank on it and forget it.

Why never trade up?
If JR surmises that there’s a great talent he wants the Giants to have and talent he can pass on with later picks, why not trade some of those later picks, move up, and grab the better talent? I definitely don’t think that they’ve philosophically ruled it out and I don’t see why anyone as a fan would rule it out. Especially when you consider that we’ve whiffed on some late-round picks recently (Stoney Woodson, DeAndre Wright..)
Manning, lobbs it.. Burress, Alone!... TOUCHDOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWN NEW YORK!!
Because
when you have 9 picks, and you are unable to trade all 9, it’s not going to happen.
If you have 10 and can trade 9, then it can happen.
Or something.

trading up doesn't make sense unless its for a QB

For starters you cannot trade comp picks.
Also we would have to give up alot to move up. Injuries happen during camp, fluke injuries can happen in the offseason. JR will keep his picks and draft wisely. I would rather have 9 guys instead of 4 or 5. It makes the competition in camp more competitive.

on the comp picks. Forgot about that.
Yeah, I would never want to go as low as 4 picks, but I could see 5 or 6…or in this case, even 7 by trading 2 away.

Also remember we have like 20 plus FAs...

say 8 of 9 picks are on the roster
and one more gets injured. 7 guys to find spots.
I think a likely scenario is that we end up without a handful of our FAs — Thomas, Ross, Goff, Ham, McKenzie … so there’s maybe 4 spots, and 3 guys seems to be our standard for preseason IR.
y the way, I really like the idea of first round OLs. Someone here told me they have a very high success rate.
You PLAY to WIN the GAME.
Dear Tebow, please let the Giants beat the Patriots.
Logan Mankins
was picked at 32 by the Patriots.
David Baas was the 33rd pick by the Niners in 2005, oddly enough. It’s like we signed somebody else’s first rounder (technically top of Round 2, but same difference).
by Pink Flamingo on Feb 16, 2012 11:01 AM EST up reply actions
Drew Brees was picked by the chargers 32nd, too.
So maybe we draft a QB that doesn’t STINK and trade that Eric Manning guy away. We should also re-sign Jeremy Shockey since that guy was such a BEAST. I hear Tiki Barber is flabbergasted that he’s not on an NFL team so maybe we sign him too?!?!
How far this franchise has come… amazing.

It's not a bad idea, but here's why I think it's unlikely this year
- Between TE, OL, DB RB we have spots to fill, so we could see those guys making the team
- We have a ton of FAs. If things go poorly we could lose MM, TT and Ross, and maybe Goff too. I’m presenting a worst case scenario, but till we get some guys signed, I’m more inclined to think Reese holds his pieces.
- JR’s approach. Hes unlikely to want to overpay for any prospect. Unless he saw it as a missing link. So if he thought that we had to have a certain player because it would make the team dramatically better, sure. But Then wouldn’t other teams want that player too?
Most likely scenario to me. If he feels he has to get a TE in the draft, it’s 3rd rd, and there is only one guy left he likes. I coud see a move up.
Eli is our King!
Yeah
It would have to be that we love certain guys and have some pieces to move around to go after them aggressively.
My big thing with trading up, to reiterate, is that it seems we have a lot of guys we’ve stashed that need to play. Our roster is pretty dense up and down, with the exception of a couple positions.
But I’m admittedly mixed on the idea – I also love hoarding picks and playing the lottery with more tickets. Just not sure we can keep all these guys – because we’re also likely to hit a few home runs with the UDFAs as well…
by Pink Flamingo on Feb 16, 2012 11:04 AM EST up reply actions
I doubt we trade up.
With 9 picks, we can afford to gamble a little bit and if a couple guys don’t pan out, then so be it. If we give up picks to go higher, and a guy doesn’t work out it becomes a much bigger issue.
Team Win Ugly.
ESPN = Everyone Spewing Putrid Nonsense
Yes draft a buncha people. Some will get hammies or not make it then we still end up with contributors to the final roster
This is not the 2007 team.
2011 NYG will have their own legacy.
In a Normal Year
Of course. My reason for questioning it this year is the abundance of talent we already have stashed. We have a LOT of young guys buried on the depth chart, particularly those coming off injuries.
But I hear ya, and philosophically I agree – just wondering if some years there may be exceptions where you might be better off going for less guys, but higher value on your board.
Probably no right or wrong, but it’s interesting to hear different opinions.

Trading Up, IMO
is very unlikely and uncharacteristic of the Giants in the early rounds. If it happens, I would expect it to be in the third at the earlest and more likely in the fourth and later rounds.
"Manning.... lobbs it! Burress, alone! TOUCHDOOOWN NEW YORK!"
Yes
it would be uncharacteristic.
As I’ve said, this isn’t about Round 1, it’s about consolidating 9 picks into a smaller number of higher value ones that we have a better chance of keeping on our already stacked, deep roster.

Jerry Reese
I often hear Jerry Reese say, “We don’t work off of a template. Every year is different. Every year we do what’s best for the team in that situation.”
Yeah, the Giants’ organization philosophically skews toward keeping picks…but some years they’ve broken the bank on free agents, other years not…it’s a fluid situation every year, so why be boxed into a template?
Reese is always emphatic about that – so while I agree that we’re not going to be trading madly like the Patriots or Eagles do, I don’t see any reason why we wouldn’t be flexible in our approach in a year where we’ve got 9 picks.
I'd be pissed if you guys traded up and got Zach Brown...
