Brandon Jacobs Playing For Rex Ryan? Nah!

Brandon Jacobs of the New York Giants answers questions from the press during a media availability session for Super Bowl XLVI at the Indianapolis Downtown Marriott on February 2, 2012 in Indianapolis, Indiana. (Photo by Scott Halleran/Getty Images)

Are you buying what Brandon Jacobs is selling? That he likes "the way Rex [Ryan] handles his business' and that he would apparently be willing to play for the New York Jets if his Giants career is over?

Maybe Jacobs is sincere, but I doubt it. Maybe he just got carried away with it being Valentine's Day and all. In reality, I think this is just Jacobs making nice in the event the Giants send him to the NFL unemployment line next month.

Jacobs is due a $500,000 roster bonus next month. If the Giants pay it they will be on the hook for Jacobs $4.4 million 2012 salary. Sorry, but the Giants aren't paying $4.9 million for a backup running back with questionable knees and, at times, a questionable attitude.

I can't see Jacobs, who had an on-field confrontation with Ryan after the Giants Christmas Eve victory, playing for Ryan. Bigger question, though, is whether the Giants want him back. If so, at what cost?

What would you do if you were the GM, Giants fans? Move on without him? Try to get him to take another pay cut?

He's not taking a pay cut

And he is nearly incapable of picking up a 3rd & 1 or 4th & 1. I say move on without him.

Offer him 2.2 million with incentives

And that’s it! Scott and draftees will have to start cracking this RB lineup. Tho AB and BJ are still failrly young alot of pelts on the horse.

Tommy Boy twice in 4 years you still can't score more than 17 points. I guess when you dont have an illegal DVD of our defense it makes it much harder now don't it?

That is the offer I would give him

though being armchair GM, I would give him 500,000 bonus. and then 2.2 mil with incentives that make it go over 3 mil.

yup that sounds about right

We got cap issues, but not all of that is Jacobs contract. if he’s willing to give a little then great, and I don’t wanna hear any crap about his attitude if he gives up that much money just to be here.

There are a lot of guys on this team that are just flat out overpaid, Rolle comes to mind immediately, and if they all realized that they are already richer than hell and took alittle off the top like Jacobs is willing to do, this team could easily be the cream of the crop next year.

otherwise they wil look to save money elsewhere at the cost of the overall product on the field.

You down wit JPP?

BBV, can we think for a second...

Look at this season. Our rushing game was only strong when we had the duo. AB couldn’t carry the load alone. I’m not saying that we need to keep BJ as that second, but he is still a big part of our game.

If we cut Jacobs, we put ourselves in a situation where we HAVE TO mix in D’Rel Scott.
As we saw, Bradshaw cannot do it alone.

Honestly, I love having Jacobs on the team. His attitude is nasty, his words get old, and it seems like he always misses the __ and 1’s. Watch his interaction with Bradshaw and Eli, and how they all played at the end of the season. This guy is a Giant, literally. I would hate to see him go.

Let’s not forget he has the franchise touchdown record.

Why won't god let us beat the Eagles?

Keep him with a pay cut.

I like the attitude he brings to the team in regard to being touch and take not s**t from other teams. He is an excellent blocker and receiver And for 10-12 carries a game can be productive or can play a whole game if need be. Keep him fresh and energized and will be productive.

The Line

stunk running the ball. Jacobs seemed like he ran hard most of the time and he is such a unique back that cutting him shouldn’t be taken lightly. I think behind a revamped line, he is certainly worth another year – at reduced pay, obviously. My only concern is the opportunity cost of keeping him at the expense of developing a young guy like Da’Rel or I Got a Ring.

by Pink Flamingo on Feb 14, 2012 1:08 PM EST reply actions

Younger Than 29

Another factor is, this guy has not been beaten up – the Giants have kept his carries down over the course of his career, he’s never carried the full load, and he’s been pretty limited the last 2 years. So his body is much fresher than your usual 29 year old back. I mean, how old was Ottis Anderson with us? I hate to give up the X factor he gives us with that size, plus he blocks very well and knows the offense.

Hard call

I mean i would def try to cut his salary. Put it this way Matt forte cant get 7.5-8 mil a year, how the hell does jacobs deserve basically 5 mil. The Giants nor any other 31 franchices would pay that. Now hopefully mr. Jacobs is smart enough to not think he deserves that and more.

I obviously want to keep him

But I agree he does need to restructure his contract. I know some people cannot stand Jacobs, but those people are not on the team. I have never seen anyone on the team seem to have any issues with him and he instead seems like a rallying point/energy guy to get the team going.

One other thing I was thinking of earlier. I know people also do not like all of the attention he brings to himself. Maybe him doing this keeps the media from hounding and bothering the other guys on the team that do not like the attention? He can be the lightning rod of all the negative stuff people throw at the team and still roll with it.

Two things

The first thing is that Jacobs hasn’t gotten beaten up in the last 2 seasons. His carries were limited. He’s not done. Keep him at a reduced salary.

The second thing is that Jacobs’ psyche is fragile. I’ve said it for years that if you want to get the best out of him, then you have to use him early in games and make him feel apart of the offense. You can’t leave him on the bench for long stretches and expect him to come out firing. It won’t happen. I know he should be able to take advantage of every opportunity but he doesn’t. Coughlin and Gilbride should know how to deal with him by now.

Keep him if we can!

He is ready to take ANOTHER pay cut to stay with the team. He truly beleives that they have a good core of player that should be kept together if at all possible, and I agree. Next year will be very different due to the fact that the lockout really caused some issues with hurried training camps and the such. BJ has a couple of more years, maybe not a a #1 back but certainly as a #2. His knee was a minor issue as well, but otherwise he is relatively healthy.

by oldschoolblue64 on Feb 14, 2012 1:25 PM EST reply actions

What happens if a team is over the cap after March 13?

I ask because once the TV money gets factored in, the 2013 salary cap is going to shoot up. That’s also when teams will have to use most of their salary and can’t sit on the money. My point is that a team wants to be a little over the cap in 2012 to win it all, they should do so, knowing that they’ll be under the 2013.

Not an easy call...

This hinges on so many different factors and the first one is salary and then what’s the alternative? Is he worth the money they’re paying him now – NO, has he slowed down – YES, but he still has some tread left in the tires, does he catch passes out of the backfield – NO (why do you think they use Ware in those situations), does he bring some toughness to the team – YES

Reese has proven that he can replace guys on the downside, and I think Jacobs is in decline. It all depends upon on much he will restructure…

by Aldo1 on Feb 14, 2012 1:27 PM EST reply actions

They'll rework his deal

I’d guess to around 3M. Too much less than that, and he’ll be tempted to let them cut him and test free agency. If they do wind up losing him, they are going to be more or less forced to sign a free agent RB since there is no way you can have Ware / Scott / Brown as your backs if Bradshaw has ankle and foot problems again. Any free agent that is better than Jacobs is will be more expensive than Jacobs would have been, likely significantly more expensive.

by Oppenheimer919 on Feb 14, 2012 1:27 PM EST reply actions

Not true...

There’s going to be an unprecendented number of free agents on the market due to the one year deals that were signed after the strike, so salaries are going to be driven way down…and I do have the feeling we’ll look for a back in the draft.

by Aldo1 on Feb 14, 2012 1:30 PM EST up reply actions

Free Agents

There will be a good number of free agents, but I agree that any as good or better than Jacobs are going to be asking for more than Jacobs.

No RB

The Giants are not going to draft an RB when they have had such good success finding productive RBs as UFAs over the past few years (i.e. Derrick Ward, Ryan Grant, Danny Ware). Even Bradshaw and Scott were both 7th round picks who were barely drafted.

The G-men are fine at RB either way…..Ware missed a block in the SB, but he knows the offense and is solid. Scott will break out soon with this coaching staff. Bradshaw will play til he can’t walk. Jacobs knows he isn’t getting 5 mil anywhere but the WWE.

In Reese we trust!

I think he gets cut, tests the market and gives us last look.

We’re not paying him the roster bonus.

He’d be kinda stupid to take whatever JR offers him now because he’ll be a UFA next year anyway. May as well find out now if there is any real money or even interest out there.

BJ will feel a lot better playing here for $1-2mm once he knows there’s no better offers out there

I just feel like

when a RB feels underpaid, he has his best years…. when they get the contract, they run not to get hurt. Brandon is a force when he is motivated (see the game against the jets, but can easily fall into lulls where he avoids contact and thinks hes a finesse back. Ok we cant pay him 4M, some people want to offer him 3M – Id offer him 2M with extra money up to the original 4M for something he can control like average YPC or even better yards after first contact.

May Doug Marrone bless you and keep you.

by ryanwk628 on Feb 15, 2012 9:40 AM EST up reply actions

Maybe

I certainly see your point, and I don’t disagree out of hand about incentives in a new contract. But it wouldn’t be a huge stretch to argue that BJ’s best year was actually 2010, when he was absolutely tearing it up, but just couldn’t get enough touches. That year was post-new contract, so I don’t know.

There have been a number of games in the past couple years where it seems like when he starts rolling, they pull him. If I feel that way just watching, I can only imagine how he feels… and I think that frustration would probably come to a head if asked to sign a contract that basically says “yeah we’d really like to see more performance out of you”.

Keep Jacobs with a paycut.

I like the physicality Jacobs brings to the game. Whenever I see Jacobs run out of the tunnel fired up and jumping around I know it’s going to be a good game. I think when Jacobs hits the hole hard and lays a big lick on a defender it fires up the whole team. I don’t think Reese can find another RB to replace the physicality and emotion BJ brings to the game.

That being said $5mil. is too big of a cap hit for Jacobs and if his deal can’t be reworked I think Jacobs’ production can be replaced, just not his intangibles.

Er, um, I mean Brandon. I would cut the guy. I think the giants will decide to part ways with the big guy. There are other guys on the roster who could step up to spilt carries with Bradshaw. The Giants could also go the FA route to find a lower cost option than Jacobs.

by ejcal70 on Feb 14, 2012 3:39 PM EST reply actions

Jacobs and Bradshaw

Both need to go. They have been good for the Giants, and I like both of them. Neither guy is a well rounded back at this point in their career. They each have their good games, but there is not enough of those good games.

It is time to move on to to younger, healthier, and cheaper guys. Give Scott and Brown a chance. Draft somebody in the 3rd or 4th round. Sign a veteran RB for 1 mil or so to come to camp and compete for a chance.

I posted this exact thing on ESPN, and I'm lazy so I'm pasting:

i have to admit that i’m pretty conflicted on jacobs staying with the giants. on the one hand, he’s obviously not the back he once was, and even in short yardage and goal line situations he’s pretty ineffective. plus he’s prone to saying and doing some pretty dumb things. on the other hand, he’s still capable of punishing tacklers, he’s a great teammate, and this would be the second time in two years that he’s volunteered to take less money for the good of the team. if the price is right, i don’t see why you don’t bring him back for another year. and that’s the last thing you’d have heard from me a couple months ago.

I want Jacobs to stick around.

1. His attitude is a double-edged sword. Can it drain the team when we’re not winning? Yeah, but it also gives us a meaner look when we’re winning.

2. If he takes a pay cut, it would be the second time in as many years that he is willing to do that. The first time, it was to make sure Ahmad Bradshaw could stay. This time, it would be to make sure he could stay. Say whatever you want about his “attitude,” he is willing to put his money where his mouth is in terms of being a team player.

3. Let’s be honest. None of our draftees are impressive. It’s one of the few positions we’ve done poorly on since Bradshaw. If we get rid of Jacobs, who is the backup if Bradshaw’s feet start acting up? We saw how critical a running game is to our success with how it picked us up towards the end of the season and into the playoffs.

4. I retract all of this if we can get our hands on LaMichael James.

by Scott Harris on Feb 14, 2012 3:56 PM EST reply actions

The Draftees

The Giants have drafted RBs in the late rounds. A team WILL NOT get an impact RB very often in late rounds. That is a HUGE myth that floats around football. Impact RBs come in the top 3 rounds. If the Giants really want a running game they need to upgrade the OL and get a RB that is more complete and can do everything on the field. Those guys are not found in the 7th round hardly ever.

Jones-Drew – 2nd round
Ray Rice – 2nd round
Turner – 5th round
McCoy – 2nd round
Foster – undrafted
Gore – 3rd round

So half were from day 2 and later, with two of them pretty far off the radar. I suppose hardly ever and not very often are a matter of perspective, but there you are.

I think this may come down to his agent

Judging the fair market value of a running back like Jacobs would be key.

Most here agree that he is a good if not great number 2 change of pace RB. What is the going price for a player like this. Are their teams willing to pay over $4 Mil for a guy like that? if so Jacobs may choose to test the waters. If the market dictates that he could only get $3 Mil or somewhere in that neighborhood, my thought is he would wanna stay with a proven winner like the team he currently plays for at that reduced rate.

he is the a record holder, and 2 time champion with the Giants. Add lifer to that tag line as well as the chance to continue winning, and his legacy may be worth more than the slight increase in pay he would receive going elsewhere.

I say you "pay cut" folks are missing an important step

There is no way Jacobs’ agent will let him take a pay cut without testing the open market.

The Giants won’t pay him the 500,000 bonus, he will be cut. The reason why they put this clause in deals is exactly so that the player won’t have to wait until July to find out if he makes the team at his current salary or not.

If he wants to remain a Giant Jacobs will give the team a chance to match the best deal he can get elsewhere. If nobody wants him he’ll have to come back to Reese and beg for whatever crumbs he can get.

It’s the same deal as Peyton Manning (or 2% of that deal)

by roguetrader on Feb 14, 2012 4:27 PM EST reply actions

Agree

He will either restructure his deal before that date or he’ll be cut and possibly brought back on a cap-friendly deal around 2.5 mil. I’m sure he won’t be signed, however, until JR gets a chance to see what other RB’s are on the market and what they’re going for. This decision won’t be made quickly.

Worst case scenario, he gets cut and we don’t find a deal we like on the FA market so we add RB as a priority in the draft. In that case we’ll probably target a back in the 3rd or 4th round, unless someone falls into our laps in an earlier round, like Amukamara last year.

Problem is

Jacobs isnt a Free Agent. He is still under contract. He can agree to a “Fair” restructured contract… or he can say no, they cut him and then he tests the FA.

The thing worth noting is that Jacobs has said he wants to stay. Meaning he probably doesnt want to test the market, meaning if a “Fair” offer comes on the table, he will sign it in a heartbeat.

by Skii31 on Feb 14, 2012 6:47 PM EST up reply actions

One major key here is....

Jacobs is a family guy, and he clearly wants to keep his family in NJ (he even said this). I think this is actually his #1 priority, above $$, and above playing for the team of his choice (the Giants). I think if the Giants won’t pay him, he’d definitely play for the Jets, as it would keep his family living situation in tact. Sort of like how Burress felt coming out of prison (and notice how Burress would like to play in Philly? That would keep his family in NJ as well).

Salary Cap Situation

Giants are in a rough salary cap situation, and even at $2M, I can’t see it making sense. We can’t pay that kind of money for a part time back and still have room to address other needs. I think Resse thinks its time for Ware and Scot to step up.

by JohnBigboote on Feb 14, 2012 4:44 PM EST reply actions

Exactly

He’s not even a starter, and Ware would be a decent replacement; he played alright this year, I thought. Plus, here’s another point: with Manning, Nicks and Cruz, we are to a large extent a passing team anyway.

On the other hand, Bradshaw is prone to nagging foot injuries, so there’s value in having a good backup. Also, I can’t forget Jacobs had one of the best yards per carry in the NFL in 2010. Still, I say unleash Ware & Scott.

by XYU on Feb 14, 2012 6:11 PM EST up reply actions

Why can't ELI MANNING take a pay cut?

How much money does he need? I’m not saying he is not worth his salary but if I was him and wanted to keep this team together an possible add more I’d totally cut my salary for it. In all seriousness. He grew up being the son of a NFL QB. Peyton is rich, he’s rich…the family is not hurting for money. Take a cut and win some more championships. I KNOW…easy for me to say but Eli is not the type of guy to burn through 100 million in a lifetime. He’ll never spend all the money.

by 732jerseyP on Feb 14, 2012 4:53 PM EST reply actions

maybe he doesn't want to keep this team together

maybe he feels like it’s good for the team to keep getting fresh blood in here. It’s good for the guys who don’t have a ring, because they’re motivated to get one. And it’s good for the guys who do have one, because they’re motivated to get one for the guys who don’t.

Its a good and valid question but at the end of the day

he has all the leverage. He’s already won 2 championships, he wants his money and can have it because he’s producing. If he started to suck for a couple years, he’d be gone.

This isn't a bad point...They may approach Eli to work with them to restructure his contract...

They are in pretty bad CAP shape..They’ll probably use a mixture of cuts and restructurings to be able to keep who they want and signings of drafts picks…JR isn’t a big fan of FAs, so I don’t foresee much on that front happening..

Riddle me this

I don’t understand why teams don’t give the 1 or 2 players that are the face of the franchise minimum contracts and then give them a piece of the team for however long they play for the team (maybe like 1/2% or something). Eli, Peyton, Brees, etc. are the kind of guys that would qualify.

by maraman on Feb 14, 2012 7:46 PM EST up reply actions

And while I'm at it

suppose you made someone a player/coach. Couldn’t you assign a certain amount of his contract to being a coach and part of it to being a player?

If he willing to take his salary down to 1.75 million with incentives than yes if not NO. He can not pick up short yardage. O line issues or not. 200 lb guys are tripping him up. He has lost his toughness in running for short yardage consistently.

hummm earliar i was going to say 1.5 million but stayed at 1.9.. but yes 1.5 for a part time RB who blocks is plenty.

He wants to start his wrestling career anyway. So i think he only wants to play one more to see if he can get a Back2Back ring to make it 3.

I love Jacobs

He’s the man and the epitome of smash mouth football.

But we don’t play smash mouth football anymore. His skill set doesn’t fit our strengths anymore. we’re a pass first team partly by necessity but also because Eli and our receivers are so good.
If he takes a pay cut, I’d love for him to be back. If not, well I’ll be sad but that’s why i’m not the GM.

The best thing for jacob’s career would be to go to a team with a decent run blocking O-line. I’d shudder to think what he could do in the Texan’s offense
