Jeremy Shockey Back To The Giants? Forget That Idea

Jeremy Shockey of the Carolina Panthers. (Photo by Mike Ehrmann/Getty Images)

We are going to spend much of the New York Giants offseason we have now entered talking about tight ends. In fact, we have already started. Which tight ends might be of interest in the 2012 NFL Draft? Which free agent tight ends might be able to help the Giants overcome the injuries that will likely cost Jake Ballard and Travis Beckum at least part of the 2012 season?

Let's talk about one name right now and get it over with. Let's talk about former New York Giant tight end Jeremy Shockey.

In case you did not know, Shockey can be a free agent this offseason after spending 2011 with the Carolina Panthers. I have already read speculation from bloggers for both teams about a potential return to New York for Shockey.

Let's get this straight right now. From where I sit, I see a ZERO percent chance of that happening. There still might be fans who pine for the crazed, Pro Bowl caliber player of his younger years, but I can't see the organization going anywhere near him. Shockey burned that bridge -- no, he took a flamethrower to it -- all by himself. Seems to me the only person the Giants would like to deal with less is Tiki Barber. And we know the Giants treat the former running back like somewhat of a leper -- to be avoided no matter what.

Star-divide

Shockey is not the player he was when the Giants made him a first-round pick in 2002. He will be 32 next season, has been injured countless times and has slowed considerably. He can still be productive, however. In 2011 he caught 37 passes in 15 games for the Panthers, averaging 12.3 yards per catch and scoring four touchdowns.

When it comes to Shockey and the Giants, though, who cares? At least one former teammate said Shockey's constant histrionics and pestering of Eli Manning retarded the quarterback's development. Remember his criticisms of Tom Coughlin? His attitude when the Giants went on to win the Super Bowl in 2008 without him? His apparent shouting match with general manager Jerry Reese?

Shockey was always all about Shockey. He was never "all in" with anything the Giants did. He was only all-in with his hard-partying lifestyle and with putting up big pass-catching numbers. The Panthers seem to like the edge Shockey still plays with and would like to re-sign him.

Let them have him. Shockey closed the door on his Giants' career long ago. There is no need to re-open it now.

Bonus movie clip. Since I mentioned flamethrowers and all.

by Syler on Feb 13, 2012 10:48 PM EST up reply actions

Not so dumb

Brady has to save face for himself and the team. Vigorously.

Yes, Welk should have caught that one but he was more than instrumental in reaching SB. Brady made mistakes himself in the game. So did other players. This was just more visible.

I would first try to get her to retract her statement and apologize. Failing that (which I think it would), I would say “You may not like this but I’m going to have to do it. It is the right thing to do, it is for a great player who made a mistake and it is for my team.”

He may have to handle the war at home but that is part of life. And part of being a real leader. Make the hard choices. Do it.

by BigBlueIntervention on Feb 13, 2012 2:41 PM EST up reply actions

I think I am with you on this

Based off of YouTube alone… I would pick Allen over Fleener. Fleener looks like glorified seem runner. Everytime you see him catch, he almost always has a step on his defender. like defenses play zone against him.

With Allen, I see him making jump balls and coming down with it, I see him dominating space.

Of course the offenses being different and different QBs factor majorly into this, but just what I have seen, I have to go with Allen.

That's true, its a little unfair for me to say he is Beckum....I just hope that Gilbride doesn't give up on him

if we do draft him. I don’t think Beckum got his fair shot because of his lack of blocking ability.

Based on Allen’s tape, he has a better chance of impressing the coaches lol

Well Allen is a great blocker

and thats what a NYG TE has to do first and foremost but Fleener is no slouch, he is actually a very very good blocker but when you compare him to Allen he loses.

Still takes nothing away from Fleener who is a beast as well, either one is fine but i do think Allen has a slight edge as of right now like you said BBI

Tiki Barber

I’ll never get over how much Tiki (my favorite Giant of all time) ruined a fruitful relationship with the Giants organization. Shockey always rubbed me the wrong way, and I was not unhappy to see him go. Tiki, on the other hand, was a longtime favorite, as a Wahoo and as a Giants, and his travails post-retirement only bring me sadness.

Absolute shame.

Had that boy had his head on straight he could have had one hell of a career in New York. (not to mention a couple rings).

I really can’t think of a player, that disappointed me more. It’s bad enough when a much hyped draft pick, doesn’t pan out with NFL talent… but when they have it and throw it away because they just can’t grow up.

I was such a Shockey fan back in the early days but I would be appalled if the Giants even bothered to speak to him about a deal.

Fleener is more like Beckum than Allen is.

You may not have focused on him because he was blocking. This past year he was used as part of the receiving corps and did a great job. The reason he’s so highly touted is the balance. Combine the blocking skills of a good blocking TE with the receiving skills of a Jermaine Gresham or Brandon Pettigrew.

His run after the catch in the playoffs, with no helmet, against the Eagles in Jan 2007?

I'd take him back

If he ate more than just a piece of humble pie (I’m talking about cutting out one piece and giving him the rest). There’s a good chance that he’s mellowed out, grown up a little bit. And there’s nobody in that huddle that he could disrespect.

If we could get him at a bargain, I don’t think he’d be a bad fit at all. Just sign him to a deal that suits the risk, so that you don’t have to think twice about cutting him if needed.

Not saying it because I think the playmaking Shockey of old would return, but because a solid veteran could really help at the TE position given the injuries. Might also help in the development of Ballard.

by Max Schwager on Feb 13, 2012 3:30 PM EST reply actions

he cant say boo to Eli or any of the guys on Offense all recent Champs. The Vet leadership at TE could be an asset. Boss always said how he helped him alot.

Making the assumption

That any human being can change. Again, only at the right price, which would be of huge benefit if Shockey turned into a team player, and minimal loss if the Giants had to cut him.

It would be a “cut at first sign of tears” approach.

by hit_hard on Feb 13, 2012 4:05 PM EST via mobile reply actions

I like the idea of going to FA for the TE position

Especially with this coaching staff… what is the likelyhood of a rookie coming out of the draft and doing anything next year? Thats not to say they shouldn’t draft a TE if a good one is around, but they have an immediate need at the position.

That said, this particular FA TE, I don’t think so. I know he had kind of a cult following because of his obvious raw talent, but to me he never really lived up to his hype. He was a good player for a few years, but never great, and there was so much dopeyness to go along with it. Plenty of dropped passes to go along with the constant threat of doing something good and then setting everybody back 15 yards by doing something stupid. IMO, no thanks.

I’d almost rather say that if they have to, get a pure blocking TE from somewhere and use Hynoski out of the backfield as the change-up receiving option.

by Oppenheimer919 on Feb 13, 2012 4:09 PM EST reply actions

Fred Davis?

Anyone think they will take a look at Davis(from Washington) I know he had and or has some off-field issues but there is no question the guy has talent. And at 6’4’’ and nearly 260 he seems to move well….not quite sure of his blocking ability.

All the Giants should play like Mark Bavaro.

TC, PF, KG, will stay but should go for the long term good.

Amani Toomer has revealed all that I need to know about Shockey

Toomer spilled it all about how much of a cancer Skockey was in the locker room and on the football field. About jow he use to bully Eli into throwing him the ball. How he often expressed how he didn’t give a crap about the team’s performance; only his. Leave his ass in the gutter or where ever he winds up. Just don’t bring him back here.

If you want to argue that Manning is a) not a great quarterback or b) not the best quarterback in franchise history your credibility is automatically shot.

This is a post I wrote on the alt.sports.football.pro.ny-giants usenet group

Subject: Jeremy, you’re dead to me

I was a huge Jeremy Shockey fan. I was at the Hall Of Fame game, his first
as a pro. After he ran over a poor Texan defender, I called my lifelong
Giant fan father who was watching on TV and we both were drooling over the
guy.

When Jeremy got stupid penalties for excessive celebrations and
unsportsmanlike conduct, I wrote it off as his emotions that fired the team
up. When he eschewed the Giants in favor of Miami in the offseason, I wrote
it off as a guy who was just more comfortable with the rest of the Miami
players. When he dropped passes, I’d say ’you’ll make a circus catch to
make up for it when we really need it.’ When he got injured all the time, I
said it was because he was such a warrior.

But you know what? As much as he claimed to only want to win, what aside
from demanding the ball did he do to show this desire?

He was constantly showing up his quarterback. When told that blocking would
help the team win, he pouted and complained about not being used properly.
And when he was injured and his teammates went on the winning streak to end
all winning streaks, he pouted about it before finally deciding that he felt
too uncomfortable to even play for the team.

Fuck you, Jeremy Shockey. A ton of talent but no heart, not really. Being
selfish is not heart and that’s all you were, a selfish jerk who would
rather catch 100 passes on a .500 team than win a Super Bowl and catch half
that many.

You didn’t want to be a Giant anymore? Fine. Take your ass somewhere else.
They’ll find out about you soon enough.

I was extremely happy with the Super Bowl run we had last year. I am even
happier this second, though, because it is obvious to me Shockey did not
deserve to win that ring so he didn’t. The team did. The team remains, the
cancer is gone.

People compared Shockey to Mark Bavaro but Shockey wasn’t fit to carry
Bavaro’s jock. Bavaro was humble, valued being a complete tight end and not
just a glorified receiver, didn’t care about personal stats and gave his
heart and soul for the team. He made the Giants better in ways Shockey
would never even be able to comprehend, let alone achieve.

I was happy to see Jeremy Shockey in a Giants uniform. Now, I am even
happier to see that he is not.

I know it was you Jeremy. You broke my heart. You broke my heart…

Excellent post!!..I love it...

Shockey..I was never fond of him really..a real nutcase..and the game where he hit that kid in the face with a cup of ice, throwing it over his shoulder..that did it for me…I knew Eli would never be what he is today with that moron and his twin Tiki in the huddle..Losing those two self-centered selfish fools has netted two Super Bowl Championships…Enough said.

Was at the game where mcnabb was sacked 12 times, 6 by osi. That was also the day I lost all respect for shockey. Cameras never captured what a pain in the ass he was. Offense would huddle up & who was too cool to join the team, hanging out on the outskirts of the huddle, looking in the stands, sidelines, wherever. Yep, shockey. Who, during TV timeouts, would yet again not be with the team on the field, but with helmet off, yelling at the giants sidelines, prob at gilbride BC he wasn’t getting the ball. He only had 1 catch that day, and I believe 2 drops. It was all about him and u could tell his time in NY was all but over.

As evidently the last Shockey supporter in NY

i’d like to say that Shockey may never be a Giant again, but for me he remains one of my favorite of all time. And the things that you want to chide him for now, are the same things we loved about him when he was here. his passion for the game, his willingness to get up in the opponents face, and tell them how he feels about them(like my current fav Big Boy). we loved it then, but we chastise him for doing it now(i applaud him for getting up in the faces of the Texans who he felt weren’t patriotic enough; he has strong convictions about that and is not afraid to let it be known)

it is sad that we chose to forget what he bought to the table as a Giant. Fighting for a first down after losing his helmet against the Eagles; his total domination of every “big name” safety in the NFC at the time(eyes looking at you b. dawk and roy will) that first preseason game where he took a pass about 60 yards and instead of crossing the goal line, sought out that last fool defender who decided to chase him for a tackle and instead got truck sticked. and we love to forget the 50+ catches and 600+ yards he provided us in 14 games, before breaking his leg giving his all in what turned out to be our first championship run of the new millennium. all of that is erased because of the way it ended, with him and management, which we may truly never actually know who was in the right and wrong on that one. but we’re Giant fans first, so we chose to believe that Giants management were right.

i’m not saying i agreed with everything he said or did. but we pick and chose our heroes here sometimes. Shockey’s a villian for speaking against the coaching staff, but Stray’s our hero, even tho he did the same. yet and still if it was Shockey healthy in that postseason run, catching that go route from Eli, all would be forgiven. trust me on that.

We as a fanbase should ask ourself a question: was he really that bad? he’s had his chances to kill us, to bash us on his way out. but he never did. he’s moved on. why haven’t we? it’s funny how out of the 3 teams he’s been with, we’re the only fanbase that doesn’t love him. makes ya think……

you still have one fan here Shock. and to you i say congrats on having two rings, and contributing to both – including your own Super Bowl winning catch.

Yes, I am a Giants fan. Now that we got that out of the way....

yeah the divorce was ugly

and like most marriages, how it ends usually dulls the memory on how good it was when it was going good. and that’s why i get mad at fans – they forget some of the good times, and just focus on the end.

and was the end that bad? he helped put us in position to make a historical run. i’ll never be mad at him for that.

i never got that he was selfish. he was confident, cocky, but not selfish. he suffered when we didn’t win. he’s always done what it takes to make the team succeed over his individual successes – that’s why the N.O. and Carolina fanbases love the guy.

Yes, I am a Giants fan. Now that we got that out of the way....

I was just going to ask if anybody thought the Giants should bring him back.

And yes, he is a FA. His 5 year deal with Vikes just ended ( I believe). He wanted boat-loads of money a couple of years ago (from what I read), but with his decreased production of late, probably couldn’t get that kind of money anymore. I wonder if the Giants are interested in bringing him back.
