All Time Giants Super Bowl Team
I don’t know about all you other Big Blue Viewers but I still can’t come down for the Super Bowl high. I mean the offseason is so much more fun when you have the Lombardi trophy. This was a great week but also a bit of a tough one for me because the day after the Super Bowl I had to fly out to San Diego for a work meeting so I missed a lot of the hoopla and I was not able to get to BBV nearly as much as I would of liked. The only positive parts of this painful trip was going through security at Newark Airport and seeing NY Giants Super Bowl Champion T-shirts all over the gift shops and the in-flight direct TV that allowed me to watch 6 hours of the NFL network the morning after the game. Instead of going to the parade I had to listen to empty corporate suites drone on about “mission statements” and “strategic visions” all the while us corporate lemmings got are balls busted about our TPS reports. Some of the lemmings drank the kool-aid and sold their souls for positive “exposure” with the new corporate brass. I on the other hand chose not to degrade myself, so instead of being “proactive” and holding myself “accountable” for a profitable 2012 I decided to come up with a position by position breakdown of the greatest Giants players of their four Super Bowl winning teams. Since this will be the first weekend without football I thought I’d post it this weekend to help us through our football hangover. It will give us something to argue about while at the same time it will allow us to celebrate our four, yes I said four, great Super Bowl winning teams.
Criteria
They had to be on the 1986, 1990, 2007, and 2011 teams. My decision was based on the following three things: Overall career with the Giants, how good each player was in their respective Super Bowl winning season, and how well they played during each team’s playoff run. I probably weighted the players overall career with the Giants slightly more than the others but I definitely have some inconsistencies in there that I’m SURE will be noticed and debated by some of you. For each position I will give a little synopsis of how I came to my conclusion and I will mention guys that were tough to cut out. Remember I’m taking individuals not entire positions so for example the o-line will not just be the 1990 O-line it will be a position by position choice. There will be 12 offensive players, (three WRs) 12 defensive players (four LBs and four D-linemen). A punter, kicker, holder, KR/PR, Special Teamer, Head Coach, DC, OC, and GM. I have also taken a couple liberties at a few positions to get the best players on the team. Now on to the team!!!!!
Offense
QB – Eli Manning. It’s weird that this was such an easy choice considering Phil Simms played the best game in Super Bowl history back in 1987 (22 of 25) but between the two game winning drives in the Super Bowl and his amazing 2011 season Eli is the choice here. Throw in the fact he’s one of only four men to win multiple Super Bowl MVPs Eli not only is an all-time great Giant but he is also one of the all-time great Super Bowl QBs.
C – Bart Oates. Was a little tough because I gave Shaun O’Hara strong consideration but Oates was the final choice because of his strong 9 year tenure with the G-Men. He was the only constant on both the 1986 O-Line and the 1990 team and was a three time Pro-Bowler in 90, 91, and 93.
RG – Chris Snee. Pretty easy choice here. He’s been a grinder on the Giants O-line since being drafted in 2004. Snee has been the Giants best and most consistent player on the offensive line since entering the league in 04. He’s a 3 time Pro Bowl selection and a 3 time All-Pro and is a big reason why the Giants have won two out of the last five Super Bowls.
LG – Brad Benson. Remember some of those liberties I discussed earlier? Well here is the first one. Before he was known as the guy with the inappropriate yet hysterical car commercials that run every five minutes on WFAN, Benson was an All-Pro LT on the 1986 team but he played multiple positions on the offensive line during his 10 year career including guard. He was the David Diehl of the 1980s but a little better. He was such a good player over the course of his career and in particular 1986 that I had to find a way to get him on the team.
LT – John “Jumbo” Elliot. This guy is the reason Benson is the guard and not the tackle. I mean an O-line man with the nickname Jumbo has to be on the team. Jumbo was fantastic in 1990 and his ability to beat up on Bruce Smith all night allowed the Giants to control the clock for 40 plus minutes which was the key to their Super Bowl 25 victory.
RT - Kareem McKenzie. What! What! What! I know he was not very good this year but in 07 he was fantastic and he was a solid player for most of his Giants career. KMack along with Snee had a lot to do with the success of the run game from 05-10.
TE – Mark Bavaro. No brainer. If you want to debate then just You-tube Bavaro dragging Ronnie Lott and you’ll realize there is nothing to debate.
WRs – This was brutally tough between guys from 07 and 11. With all due respect to fan favorites like Phil McConkey, Mark Ingram, and Stephen Baker these guys don’t compare to what we’ve seen at this position in 07 and 11.
WR1 – Hakeem Nicks. Plaxico caught the game winner in 07 , ate up the Packers in the Championship game that year, and we don’t win a SB without Plax but Nicks was even better this post season. Nicks dominated both ATL, and GB in the playoffs then had 10 balls in the Super Bowl. In three seasons he has been a very good player and is on the verge of becoming an awesome one.
Slot WR – Victor Cruuuuuz. Steve Smith was vital in the 07 run. He had a very nice career with the Giants and was their first Pro Bowler at that position in about 100 years but in 2011 Victor Cruz was the most explosive, clutch WR I’ve ever seen in Giant’s blue. Not only that his 99 yard TD vs the Jets was the turning point of the 2011 season. Tough not to put Cruz on this list.
WR2 – Amani Toomer. Tough tough call here between “The always well dressed” and “Super Mario”. I mean Mario has one of the greatest catches in Super Bowl history along with big TD grabs in the three playoff games leading up to this Super Bowl. If I was picking an entire unit I’d say the 2011 WRs > than the 2007 group and Mario would be on it but Toomer is the most productive WR in Giants history and was great in the 07 playoffs with his 3 TD catches, (two vs Dallas), while making a handful of unspectacular yet clutch grabs for Eli in every playoff game during that run.
FB – Maurcie Carthon. The 1986 Super Bowl highlight video, “Land of the Giants”, describes Carthon as a Guard in a fullbacks uniform. That about sums up Carthon’s career.
RB – Joe Morris. You can probably go in a few directions here. OJ Anderson, Brandon Jacobs, Ahmad Bradshaw are all compelling cases but Morris’s 1,500 yard 14 TD season in 1986 gets him on this team.
Defense
The D-Line was brutally tough and will be fiercely debated by you folks but that’s what happens when you have so many great players.
DE – Michael Strahan. The only easy one. Arguably the greatest D-Lineman in Giants history and future Hall of Famer.
DT – Justin Tuck. I know! I know! He’s a DE but again I’m trying to put together the best team and he played DT extensively in 07 and has lined up at DT many times since he broke through in 07. Bottom line he’s a guy that played a lot of DT in Super Bowl 42 he ruined that game for the Patriots. He then played it at times this past Sunday and recorded another two sacks. 4 Sacks in two Super Bowls plus what he’s meant to the G-Men since 05 means he’s getting on this team.
DT- Erik Howard. I could not go full NASCAR package here so I needed one true DT and Howards the choice. You can make solid arguments for Jim Burt, Fred Robbins, Barry Cofield, and even Chris Canty but Howard had a very good 9 year career with the Giants. He was on both the 86 and 90 teams and was a Pro Bowler in 1990. He also forced the fumble of Roger Craig in the 1990 title game.
DE – Osi Umenyiora. This was by far the toughest decision and I know will be debated a bit. JPP was the team’s MVP on D this season and had one of the greatest defensive seasons in Giants history but Osi has had a tremendous 9 year career and was the team’s best player in 2007 while making a huge impact this past season. His ability to strip sack QBs is uncanny and his strip of Aaron Rodgers in the divisional playoffs this year was as big of a play in recent Giant playoff history. This position was tough not only because of JPP but also because of guys like Leonard Marshall and George Martin who were great D-Ends in their own right and would normally be any all-time type of team. JPP might be the choice down the road but right now it’s Osi
El Beeeez – This position was very easy for three of them the fourth spot was tough.
OLB – LT. The greatest defensive player to ever play the game.
OLB – Carl Banks. He’s a bit unheralded but was a fantastic player for nine years with the Giants. Outplayed LT in the 86 playoffs and Super Bowl. He had 10 tackles vs the Broncos in SB 21.
ILB – Harry Carson. The Hall of Famer is the Captain of this great team of Super Bowl superstars.
ILB – Pepper Johnson. I really thought hard about Antonio Pierce in this spot. AP was the feisty leader of that 07 team and was a big part of that teams attitude and identity. Honking the horn at the media when they're 0-2 and the black suits for SB 42, it was tough to go against him. But Pepper was an All-Pro in 1990 and was a fantastic player in his own right who had a distinguished Giants career. He gets the nod.
CBs– Corey Webster and Mark Collins – I’m putting these two together because they are as eerily similar as players as the 07 and 11 Super Bowl runs are similar. Both of these guys were Pro Bowl caliber players that never got the recognition they deserve because of the great font sevens that played in front of them. Collins was a fantastic player in 1990. He shut down Jerry Rice both times he faced them in 90 and then he did a number on the Bills WRs in the Super Bowl. He could of made the Pro Bowl numerous times but never did. The same holds true for Webster. It took his career a while to get going but once he replaced Sam Madison in the 07 playoffs he’s never looked back. His pick in OT vs the Packers set up the game winning FG in the 07 title game and he has become an excellent cover corner who routinely matches up with the other teams top WRs. He could have been a Pro Bowl selection numerous times as well but he’s never gotten in.
Safteys – This was tough. This year’s group and 1990’s held a clear advantage over the 86 and 07 teams but neither group was drastically better than the other. I think I’ll get some arguments here as well.
FS – Greg Jackson. He got this over KP because he was more of a ball hawk. He had 5 picks in 1990 and overall was a fine player in his 4 years with the GMen. People forget that the 90 Giants relied on the back end of the D a lot more than the 86 team and Jackson was a big reason for that.
SS – Antrel Rolle. I could of gone Myron Guyton here but I think Antrel’s leadership and attitude made me pick him. His 96 tackles this year as well as playing multiple positions on D to make up for the injuries also helped me when making this decision.
Special Teams
K – Matt Barr. I could go Tynes for twice kicking the G-Men in the Super Bowl but let’s be honest he blew 2 shots vs GB before he finally got it right and even his two FGs in last week’s Super Bowl were a little too close for comfort. Barr kicked five FGs vs the Niners in 1990 and the game winner to send the Giants to Super Bowl 25. Throw in the fact he made the tackle on the opening kickoff in Super Bowl 25 and he’s the number 9 I would want kicking for me.
P – You know where I’m going. Sean Landeta. He was a Pro Bowler in both 86 and 90. He could coffin corner with the best of them and his yearly average was usually in the mid 40’s. Frankly he’s the best punter in Giants history.
KR – Dave Meggett. I guess you could consider Hixon but to me little Dave Meggett was the best KR I’ve seen where Giant Blue.
Special Teamer – David Tyree. Yes Catch 42 is influencing me on this one but he was an excellent Pro Bowl special teamer for the Giants in his years with New York. Reyna Thompson was also excellent in 1990 as well as Devin Thomas this year. But Tyree gets the nod.
Holder – Steve Weatherford. This guy cracks me up I just wanted to put him on. He did make a great play on a low snap in the title game vs the Niners so without him the Giants might of blown another big game with a special teams gaff so I created a spot for him.
Coaching staff
OC – Kevin Gillbride. I know a lot of you guys don’t like him but he’s done a solid job while he’s been in NY. The Giants passing O has evolved into one of the best in the league and he sticks to the run to keep teams honest. He might not be Sean Payton but he’s pretty good and is the best OC the Giants have had in a long time.
DC – Bill Belichick. Spags and Fewell did some good work but Belichick is one of the best defensive minds ever and did marvelous work with the Giants D in the 80’s. Another no-brainer here.
Head Coach – Tom Coughlin. Tough, tough call here between Coughlin and Bill Parcells. The similarities are striking. In eight years with the Giants both coaches led the Giants to 5 playoff appearances, 3 division titles, and two Super Bowl wins in their 4th and 8th seasons. They’re both 8-3 in the playoffs as head coach of the Giants. Parcells has a few more regular season wins, that’s the only difference. So why am I taken Coughlin over Parcells? Simple, I like him more. Parcells was great but his ego rubbed me the wrong way a bit. He flirted with Atlanta after his first Super Bowl win and I was not thrilled about him waiting until May to leave the Giants back in 1991. He also has a few strikes in my book for coaching both the Jets and the Cowboys. TC is a lot more loyal and does not make it about himself the way Parcells did at times.
General Manager – George Young. Years from now it might be Jerry Reece but for now its Young, here is why. Outside of Carson, Martin, and Benson the entire 1986 Giant roster was drafted or acquired by George Young including LT and Simms. Not only that George Young inherited a mess in 1979 when he took over while JR inherited a playoff team. JR did an excellent job in 07 but he put the finishing touches on a team that was close to championship, Young built a championship team. Both men did an excellent job reshaping the Giants between Super Bowl wins. Young rebuilt the O-line, D-Backs, and WRs between 1986 and 1990 while JR did the same for the Giants WRs, LBs, Safeties, and D-Tackles. Young replaced players like Harry Carson and Brad Benson with players like Pepper Johnson and Jumbo Elliot, while JR replaced guys like Michael Strahan and Plaxico Burress with JPP and Hakeem Nicks. The other reason why I take George Young over JR is Young had an imprint on the 07 Giants as well. He drafted Strahan in 1993 and he drafted Amani Toomer in the second round of his last draft in 1996. Young had an impact all the way to 07, that’s pretty impressive.
Well that’s its fellas. Let me know what you think. I’m sure there will be some debate, but what the hell there is no Football this Sunday so why not spend our time arguing about this.

This is great, rec'd.
First off, you absolutely made the right choice with Harry Carson being this teams Captain. I have this enduring memory of him from the 1987 NFC Championship Game vs. the Redskins where Parcells sent him, and only him, out for the coin toss before the game. He was doing this little dance there as about five Redskins stood watching and paper was swirling all around. He was a beast.
And I think you made a great case, and a proper one, for George Young As GM though I would have probably mentioned Ernie second before Reese.
Some of my favorite picks that others might argue:
Joe Morris
Jumbo Elliot
Kareem McKenzie
Greg Jackson, though for me this was a no brainer over KP, as much as I like KP
Matt Barr. The guy won SB’s with the Steelers and Giants. Clutch as clutch gets.
Landeta. If punters were allowed in the HOF he would be near the top of the list.
Guys I would argue:
Gimme the Parcells and Belichick combo.
I would have William Roberts at RG.
Leonard Marshall at RDE
Fun post, I love lists….

I was very close to picking Marshall
He was the bookend rusher to LT. He had 2 sacks in the SB 21 and a sack in 25, it was really really tough with the D-End spot.
Roberts is interesting, good player but took some time to devlop was a backup in 86, Snee was starting right out of the gate.
Parcells, I understand, that was more of a personality thing. Their Giant resumes are freaksihly similar so to me its like flipping coin between the two.

This is a great article.
My only argument against it is that the payers should have been placed on an All Time Giants Superbowl roster solely based on superbowl performance and not the rest of the playoffs or the regular season for that yeah. If a one year journeyman came thru in the big game than he supersedes a guy who was on roster for many years but did not perform that well in the big game.
This is not the 2007 team.
2011 NYG will have their own legacy.
i would also suggest that we consider the 5th superbowl (the one we lost) too. Did we have any player that can go in this list?
i know i know we lost that one but we did have a kick/punt return for a TD in that game. Yes we sucked in that game but those were our players too and we should not turn our backs on that team.
This is not the 2007 team.
2011 NYG will have their own legacy.
I thought about that too,
and there really is only one guy I can think of who would replace someone on Landeta’s list. That would be Tiki over Morris.
The guys that stand out for me are Tiki, Armstead, and Hammer.

If you go by my criteria, career and playoff performance
Tiki Barber, Kieth Hamilton are on
Maybe Armstead and Sehorn as well
If you go by your criteria, soley based on SB perfornace than Ron Dixon the kick returner gets on.
"Thats Eli man cooler than the other side of the pillow" Mario Manningham after Super Bowl XLVI
If you go with career performance then the title of this post should be best performing Giants. When you talk about Superbowl performance then that strictly should be Superbowl performance.
Ron Dixon had the best kick return in Giants superbowl history. He is the only one who scored a TD on return. Was it also not the 2nd half kickoff?
This is not the 2007 team.

No it was after Collins threw a pick six
The Giant special teams returned the favor on the next kickoff and the game was over from that point on.

Oh ok remember now and dang we threw 4 INTS in that game and that was after that huge performance against Vikes in championship game.
This is not the 2007 team.
2011 NYG will have their own legacy.
Nobody was beating that Ravens team that year.

Yes they were just too good on defense. The current Giants would have beaten the Ravens though

Penalties killed us
We had two TDs reversed…if I remember corectly. Things like that change a team’s momentum.

If you go soley on SB performance the team would look like this
QB SImms 21
RB OJ Anderson 25
FB Carthon 25 (maybe Hynoski in 46)
WRs Tyree 42, Manningham 46, Nicks 46 (Mark Ingram could be on as well for SB 25)
TE Bavaro 21
OL – 1990 group 25 I can’t accuratley asses right guard play well enough from one game to another so I’ll go the entire unit
DE Strhan 35 or 42 and Marshal 21
DT Tuck 42
DT Jim Burt 21
LB Banks 21, Carson 21, Kawika Mithcell 42, LT 21 (Maybe CHase for 46??)
DB’s 1990 unit (againt tough to asses individual saftey/CB play from one game to another)
KR – Ron Dixon 35
P – Weatherford 46
ST – Devin THomas 46
HC – TC for 42, upsetting the undefeated Pats was the greatest win in franchise history.
DC – THis is tough but BB for 25, SPags could get the nod for 42 as well
OC – Gillbride – for 46
I went indiduals becasue some position are soo tough to decide from one position to another. Like OL and DB’s. Positions without stats are really tough. Even LB is challanging Banks is the only obvious one from his SB 21 performance when he could of been MVP like Tuck in 42. Our Only D-Back with a pick in a SB in Toast Patterson and he’s not getting on so I have to go entire 1990 DBack core becasue they shut down the Bills WRs just like you have to go 1990 O-line for 150 rushing yards and controlling the clock for over 40 minuetes.
Doing individuals based on career/seasons gives you a little more to debate. . . ie Osi over Marshall thats being questioned and rightfully.
Its all good though. They’re showing SB highlights all day on the NFL network, I think I know what I’m doing!!!!
"Thats Eli man cooler than the other side of the pillow" Mario Manningham after Super Bowl XLVI
This is a good list too right here. We can also do two names. 1st name and 2nd name for the performance. Or rank them 1 thru 4.
This is not the 2007 team.
2011 NYG will have their own legacy.
Not Simms
No way is Simms better than Eli. He played in one SB. The rest of his career was spent getting sacked for holding the ball too long.

Sounds like you really investigated this stuff for the Post.
It shows. And I liked Marshall over Osi for the reason you stated; bookend with LT. Plaus he WAS awesome and did some great things during both runs.
And if I had to trade Parcells for TC I would not have any worries.

Its not that its stressfull, hell I feel like an ass complaining about a good job in a lousey economy but when you’re confined to a week with nothing but corporate clowns, the BS is unbelievable its like an alternative world of mind control, fear mongering, and properganda and if you step out of line you’re no longer a “team Player” its very cult like.

I love the list
Glad you had Carl Banks on the list. He was awsome and was definitely underrated. Head coach was Tom Coughlin…hands down. Parcells had a team that was expected to win the first time and he had Bellicheck. Coughlin had to motivate a team that won just 10 games the 1st time and 9 games the 2nd time. To me, it’s not even close.

Besides Roberts at RG
What were your thoughts about Doug Reisenberg at RT? W/O looking it up, i thought he had a solid career.
It was tough becasue Reisenberg, KMack, and Karl Nelson were all on the same level
but I chose KMack because he was on two SB teams, and our running game was soodominate over the right side from 05-10 that I had to put KMack on
"Thats Eli man cooler than the other side of the pillow" Mario Manningham after Super Bowl XLVI
Yup
I noticed the glaring omission (in my bk) of Leonard Marshall…..till I saw he didnt go 4-3, or 3-4, but went 4-4
12 men on the field flag?
But it burned precious seconds off the clock!!
So it works out ;-)

This is awesome
The funny thing, I think the punter spot is one of the most toughest choices. Landeta was one of the best ever, but so was Jeff Feagles. I personally never really saw Landeta, but Jeff Feagles always pinned a team back inside their 20.

Last Sunday...
Weatherford made a HUGE impact on that game. His first punt made that safety possible. He had 3/4 within the 10. (Might not be exact, exact ten) The other one bounced within the five and came very close to getting downed right there. I know that this list isn’t ALL SB performances, But ace punting last week.
Plus he was signing autographs at Hooter’s a few hours ago.
Plus he had my favortite live on air lip reading moment this season after tynes kicked past SF.
Plus… He’s not Matt Dodge.

Landeta and Feagles are actually 2 of the greatest punters ever
Weatherford had one of the greatest SB performances ever for a Punter.
but Landeta has 2 rings where Feagles and Weatherford have 1.
landeta gotta take it
Fire Fewell
+1 Punter was very tough
but Landeta had a longer career with the Gmen, was a Pro BOwler both Super BOwl seasons, and if you remember the 90 team relied on fiedl position a lot so he was my choice.
"Thats Eli man cooler than the other side of the pillow" Mario Manningham after Super Bowl XLVI
interesting that we've always had great punting in the big games...
I didn’t pay attention to punting when I was a kid, so all I know of Landeta is from youse guys. I’m a big Feagles fan because that man could drop that football on a carefully placed dime inside the 10.
And man, its just extraordinary what Weatherford just did — I think he had the single best punting Super Bowl of the 4… remember he even dropped one on the 5 that the coverage team failed to down… otherwise he would have dropped it inside the 10 or so … FOUR TIMES.
You PLAY to WIN the GAME.

but Sean averaged about 45 yards per punt compared to low 40’s for Feagles and had loads of hang time on them. THe 1990 team relied so heavely on Field position, they won the way this years Niners did 20-13 with great D and special teams. He along with Special Teamer Reyna Thompson were our secret weapons in 1990.
"Thats Eli man cooler than the other side of the pillow" Mario Manningham after Super Bowl XLVI
Reyna Thompson was a great ST player. Then he went to Canadian league i think.
This is not the 2007 team.
2011 NYG will have their own legacy.
good post...rec'd
BUT I feel it’s so hard to give the front 7 justice…plus w/ the 3-4 vs. the 4-3
personally if you are going 3-4 i’d have to go:
DLINE: Tuck, Burt, Strahan
LBs: LT, Carson, Pierce,Banks (although Pepper Johnson is really close @ ILB and Leonard Marshall just gets edged out by Tuck b/c Tuck’s performances in 2 SBs)
If you are you going 4-3:
DLine: Tuck, Marshall, Burt, Strahan
LBs: LT, Carson, Banks
Fire Fewell
damn
that is awesome
You PLAY to WIN the GAME.

My issue is the size of the NT & DT
Jim Burt, Howard these guys were not big guys. I think if they played now in this era against 300+ lineman they might get crushed. Even tho they were both IMO better than Canty and others the size factor might play a huge roll.
Tommy Boy twice in 4 years you still can't score more than 17 points. I guess when you dont have an illegal DVD of our defense it makes it much harder now don't it?

Good stuff
While I agree with LT being the greatest defensive player to ever play the game, if my memory serves me well, he played rather ordinary, for him, in both the 87 and 91 Super Bowls, but who can quibble with his overall body of work. Thanks for mentioning George Martin, because he was a beast on many of those dreadful teams in the late 70’s and survived to make the 87 Super Bowl.
you're right about LT
but again my criterea was overall Giants career not just SB perfomrance.
"Thats Eli man cooler than the other side of the pillow" Mario Manningham after Super Bowl XLVI
Dline what happen to martin and marshall
RB. Rodney Hampton has to be up there too
Reyna Thompson on punt coverage was just insanity how quick and fast he would cover them
LB Gary Reason with the Hit of all time in Denver of the 90 season
"They got a big-mouthed coach, a big mouth and a big-bellied coach that talks too much and now it's finally time to shut up- Brandon Jacobs
Hamton got injured in the divisional playoffs in 90
and missed the entire playoffs, thats why OJ ended up being MVP of that Super Bowl
Yea Dline was tough, I adress Martin and Marshall and I agree you could put them on over Osi.
Reasons was good, just too many good LBs.
"Thats Eli man cooler than the other side of the pillow" Mario Manningham after Super Bowl XLVI
Ummmm
Pretty sure Rodney Hampton played in the 90 SB. Almost positive about it. Watched the full game broadcast on NFL Network not too long ago.
He has courage and poise. In my opinion, most of all, he has that quality you can't define. Call it magic. … I honestly give this guy a chance to be better than his brother." - Ernie Accorsi scouting report of Eli Manning
No he did not
he broke his foot in the divisional playoff vs the Bears. Thats why OJ started. Dave Meggett played a lot so I think you’re thinking of him. I guarantee this. OJ did not think he was going to play so he wore his practice pants for the Bears game in the DIvisional playoffs. Hampton went down early so OJ came in and played well. Parcells being superstitious told OJ were your practice pants for the rest of the playoffs and I’ll pay your fine, thats why in those NFL films videos of 1990 OJs pants look like they’re falling down the whole time.
"Thats Eli man cooler than the other side of the pillow" Mario Manningham after Super Bowl XLVI
Lol
No I know the difference between Hampton and Meggett. 27 and 30 respectfully. Are you sure he didn’t play?!

Correct
Hampton broke his leg in the divisional round when Giants beat the Bears 31-3. He was out for the next two games that post season which included superbowl.
This is not the 2007 team.
2011 NYG will have their own legacy.
And if we were measuring only SB performance
or total career performance (including time outside the Giants organization) then the RB would have to be Ottis Anderson, SB 25 MVP. Ottis arguably the greatest RB to ever play for the Giants, if you look at his whole career.

If we are talking about best Giants superbowl players then we should consider superbowl performance only.
This is not the 2007 team.

Reyna Thompson was great as well
that was tough, but Tyree made a pro bowler as a special teamer as well and made contributions other than specials in his super bowl seasn. I might of gone sentimental with Tyre casue Thompson was excellent.
"Thats Eli man cooler than the other side of the pillow" Mario Manningham after Super Bowl XLVI
Thompson made the Pro Bowl as well.
And IIRC, he was paid 1 million for a season as a special teamer. He was the best gunner I have ever seen on the Giants.

LOL!!! I know
I don’t know what I bitch about, serously.
"Thats Eli man cooler than the other side of the pillow" Mario Manningham after Super Bowl XLVI
and even though we're basically comparing two teams
the players have changed
take ILB/MLB for example: you can make a case for Carson (the lock), Reasons, Pepper Johnson, Pierce, AND Boley IMO. Especially if you are taking a 3-4 D w/ 2 ILBs.

I'm surprised there's no love for Burress here
He had one of the best games by a WR for us vs the Packers and he had the Game winning TD in the Super Bowl.
I’d put him over Cruz for the sole fact Cruz has only had one year (albeit an amazing one)

I’d take burress over all three of those receivers. Dude was an absolute game changer.

Nicks and Cruz are just as much of game changers as Plax was
all three had to be doubled are they’d eat you up.
"Thats Eli man cooler than the other side of the pillow" Mario Manningham after Super Bowl XLVI
Yea, my only disagreement was WR
I’d have chosen Burress over Cruz. Perhaps after a few years, Cruz moves up, but Burress also won with the Steelers.

Not sure but i dont think Burress won superbowl with the Steelers. He was on the Giants when Steelers win the SB
This is not the 2007 team.

Yea I hear you but NIcks was better in the SB and overall in the playoffs
Not only that Nick’s game vs ATL, GB, and SB were better than any game Plax had in 07. Also part of my criterea was overall career so Amani gets in. Remember Plax’s NYG career was 3 and a half years.
I hear you on Cruz but man he was so freaking good this year. He broke every Giant receiving record.

I only have one or two problems with this list....
Osi has to go, one trick pony even though that one trick is pretty damn good. I would’ve been ok with any one of the DEs you mentioned ie George Martin, L. Marshall or JPP. I’d also replace one of the safeties with KP, probably Rolle. Other than that I agree with everything. Hell of a job Landeta.

Feagles is on this team, if not as punter definitely the holder. He was phenomenal at getting bad snaps down.

Thats why I put Weatherford on
his hold in the NFC championship on a low snap was the best I’d every seen.
"Thats Eli man cooler than the other side of the pillow" Mario Manningham after Super Bowl XLVI
Actually Weatherford called for the low snap
Weatherford got the placement of the snap exactly where he asked for it. He wanted it low so that he wouldn’t take the risk of having to move his knee

Good piece of info. Thanks!
"Thats Eli man cooler than the other side of the pillow" Mario Manningham after Super Bowl XLVI
Thanks. Yea saftey was tough
My orginal thought was Leonard Marshall at DE, I changed it up last minute becasue of Osi’s overall playmaking ability. I agree Marshall is probabbly the over all better player.
"Thats Eli man cooler than the other side of the pillow" Mario Manningham after Super Bowl XLVI
I know he had character issues
but you simply cannot take Toomer over Plaxico. Not that close in talent. Maybe give him a minus for messing up later teams but he was clearly the best when he played.
Again part of my criterea was overall Giants career
Toomers was better than Plax’s Plax was only in NY for 3 and half years.
Point taken though you can take Plax he was a great player for the Giants.
"Thats Eli man cooler than the other side of the pillow" Mario Manningham after Super Bowl XLVI
Pretty good list, suggested changes
William Roberts at guard. Backup in the first one, starting LG in the second one. Powerful as a run blocker, I believe he made one Pro Bowl.
Terry Kinard at free safety. Had to longest tenure of any free safety in my memory, easily, and always had a bunch of INTs.
Really can’t argue the others. Howard was better than Burt, even though he was less well known. Osi over Marshall, maybe not as consistent, but more dangerous in his peak. Oates over Williams and O’Hara, but all strong players.
My QB has 2 rings. Well, 3 if you want to get technical.
2012 NYG mock - 1: Dwayne Allen TE, 2: Brandon Boykin CB/RS, 3: A.J. Jenkins WR, 4: Vick Ballard RB, 5: Neiko Thorpe S, 6: Rishard Matthews WR/RS, 6: Blake DeChristopher G/T, 7: BPA
Kinard did not play in SB 21
He was on injured reserve, Herb Welch started in his place. Had Kindard played in that game, I would of taken him. He was the best saftey they’ve had in a while.
"Thats Eli man cooler than the other side of the pillow" Mario Manningham after Super Bowl XLVI
Im in my late 20s
so I didnt really watch the 86 and 90 teams…. was Sean Landeta really better than Jeff Feagles?
May Doug Marrone bless you and keep you.
His punts during the 86 NFC Championship
Alone in the 30mph wind puts him in there
Tommy Boy twice in 4 years you still can't score more than 17 points. I guess when you dont have an illegal DVD of our defense it makes it much harder now don't it?
by NYG86-90-07-11 on Feb 15, 2012 2:53 PM EST up reply actions
Oh Yes Landeta was very good and you could depend on him.
Landeta punted over 1400 punts for over 60,000 yards.
We had another kicker Ali Haji Sheikh but he did not make the superbowl with the Giants as he left the Giants for Falcons after the 1985 season. Ali Haji Sheikh holds the Giants longest FG record at 56 yards.
This is not the 2007 team.
2011 NYG will have their own legacy.
His punts were longer and had more hangtime
Feagles might of been better with the coffin corner kick, he’s one of the best I’ve ever seen but Sean was pretty good as well. The 90 team was a field position team, very much like this past seasons Niners so they relied on Landeta to set them up with good field position.

I just loved the fact he had a beer gut and a porn star stach in his playing days in the 80’s . . . How bout Tiki and Rodney Hampton as backups?
I thought Tiki was great his final two years with the Giants. Felt like he was 5+ yards per carry.
It's still GIANTS Stadium
You down wit JPP---yeah you know me
Tiki was awsome
he was like Matt Forte today. he accounted for over 50% of the Giants offense three years in a row and finished in the top four of MVP voting those same three years. One of those years he was runner up.

it's crazy how he gets lost in the wash with us now that he left on the terms he did
surprisingly, i find myself somewhat happy he’s found some parttime work on SNY. as much as i despise him sometimes, he’s hit the lowest of lows in life, and karma has bit his ass very hard. he should get back on his feet, at least a little. so good for him.
